Fresh and Dance-Ready Synth Pop From Yumi Zouma

12779160_975727142482154_8328477424095575516_oIt’s time to puton your dancing shoes and start doing some mild stretching so you don’t pull your back out when you bust out a shimmy for this new track from Yumi Zouma. This four piece have announced today that they’re releasing their debut album, Yoncalla, fairly soon in May, and with that news they’ve given us “Keep It Close To Me,” which is a simmering synth pop gem that calls for dancing. There’s something quite compelling about the minimalism of this song; the vocals are impossibly smooth and cool, while those beats pulse and build, giving out the simultaneous soothing and unsettling feeling. Take a listen and hear for yourself.

Yoncalla will be out May 27th via Cascine Records, and you should pre-order it here.

Yet Another Attic Basement Track

atticI’ve spent quite a bit of time with the Attic Basement album, Dream News, as of late. I think this songis one of those unassuming gems that’s hiding on the record. It’s got an intricate, almost math-rock, manner of guitar playing; it almost sounds like Television at times. The lyrical delivery is relaxed, almost delivered haphazardly over the band’s musical output. There’s some distinctive changes within this record, and this song is just an example of the variance in sound you’ll find when you pick up your copy of the new LP. It’s going to be released by Father Daughter Records on May 27th.

Song Premiere: Save The Clocktower Give You “Something Different”

1404518_10152596748113611_2823633749311247952_oSave The Clocktower is an indie pop outfit that hails from Chicago and have been around for a little while, creating music that is both mellow and lingering. The track below, “Something Different,” combines elements of synth and classic indie pop that will have you bobbing your head right along with the pulsating beats and whirling electronicsounds that make this song a dreamy gem. This song is taken from the EP that the band is releasing on Friday, which is called Taboo.Make sure you go listen to the lead single here, and then get your hands on that EP here.

Peach Kelli Pop Give You Gritty Lo-Fi

peachkelliPeach Kelli Pop out of LA are band of five ladies that are killing the lo-fi punk game. They’ve got a 7″ that’s due out on April 29th and have released the lead single and title track, called “Halloween Mask.” This song is the grumbling and fuzzy number that you’ve been waiting to hear all day, and its straightforward, uncompromising sound will have you jamming right along with them. I’m liking the way that the vocals are sugary, complimenting those distorted guitars and the rumbling percussion. The whole song is nice balanced, and builds to the end with some white hot guitars that will make you press play again the second that it’s over.

Perfect Pop from Mutual Benefit

mutualbenefitThere are some songs that are executed almost to perfection, and this brand new Mutual Benefit is one such number. Almost from the opening moments, the careful layering of strings and quieted percussion lays the groundwork for this perfect piece of pop. Vocals enter the picture carefully, melting into the song itself, touching every emotion as the song progresses towards its quiet end. This song looks to play a prominent role in your enjoyment, or anyone’s enjoyment, when Skip a Sinking Stone is released via Mom + Pop on May 20th.

Crepes Take On Old Tones with New Single

crepesYou’d think it would be easy to throw Crepes in the mix with the rest of the Melbourne acts, but like all great music scenes, they’re probably far more vibrant and varying than the coverage…which is why I like Crepes. They seem to take on a spin of an older style of pop music, looking back at some of the early psychedelic acts that were taking pop construction into newer directions. I love the feeling that the vocals are just falling from the heavens, dripping into the track itself. This is our first taste of new music from the act, but you should also travel back in time to listen to their Cold Summers EP.

Ghost Orchard Join Orchid Tapes

ghostorchardMan, this is precisely the music that I think of when I think of Orchid Tapes…just one of the reasons I really love the label. This new Ghost Orchard tune from their forthcoming album Bliss is remarkable; it’s got the exact sentiment that defines bedroom pop music. But, surprisingly, there’s a maturity to it that you wouldn’t associate with an 18 year-old, like singer/songwriter Sam Hall. It sounds like the perfect track for you to drift away into your daydreams at work, or to lay on the floor and just let your mind run amok. Should be out via the label real soon, ya here.

How’d I Miss This: New Malcolm Middleton

malcolmIt’s been awhile, quite awhile, since I’ve heard anything from former Arab Strap member Malcolm Middleton. I kept checking back in, hoping he’d offer up something similar to the brilliant Waxing Gibbous. Well, the follow-up has been announced via Nude Records…and somehow I’m just now hearing about it! But, I’m a bit unsure of the lead single…or at least what it might lead to. While the last solo effort was stripped down and ornate, this single offers glimpses of an electro-pop bit of sadness coming our way. It’s still Middleton’s voice and distinct delivery, so I like it, but not sure it’ll endure for the entirety of an album. I guess we’ll see when Summer of ’13 hits on May 27th. Make up your own mind!

Stream the New EP from A Novel Resort

novelresortLong ago I was really excited to hear that Michael from Northern Portrait was working on a new project, A Novel Resort. But, while that first track was great, things had been rather silent until Jigsaw Records up and broke out the band’s debut EP, Island of Atlas. The songs on this EP dwell in the softer side of indiepop, trickling melodies, calming vocals and lyrics that will run through your head. If this happens to be your style, then you can grab the EP HERE, or just stream and love it below.

Another Track from The Blessed Isles

blessedislesI have a feeling that B. Gray’s going to be asking me for this album from The Blessed Isles, as this is the sort of electro-pop he’s known to love; it hearkens back to 80s club bangers, though with just a tad bit more creativity thrown into the mix. Guitars dance in and out of the main beat, whilst a little whisper of a vocal sample often jumps through the main voice. Their new album, Straining Hard Against the Strength of Night, is going to be released by Saint Marie Records on May 20th; it’s going to make you dance and gaze, but in the most thoughtful of ways.
