The song starts slowly, with a bit of saxophone and synthy pulses echoing through the mix before the sleek vocals kick in and you get a full on groove going. Mean Jolene Album Release Tonight at Cheer Up Charlies

albumreleaseWe’ve worked really hard this year on our label, trying to make it as supportive and all encompassing, in regards to what we love about Austin music. Tonight we celebrate 2016 with our final release of the year, the debut album from Mean Jolene. It’s titled Salty, and it’s the perfect slice of fuzzy guitar pop that will endear itself to just about anyone. Plus, our friend Ali Copeland killed the artwork, and it’s about as incredible as you can get, so why not come get one tonight? Doors are at 9, and you don’t need an SoS wristband to get into the show. The rest of the bill has Talkies, Haybaby, The Bond Twins and another ATH band closing out the night, Summer Salt. It’s going to be ridiculously fun, and I hope I see you there!

If you’re not in town and love what you hear, the record is in at the shop!

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Sign To Sub Pop

unnamed-5Man, I love it when we’re right. Not to be those snobs, but when a band that we’ve been digging from the start catches a break and signs to a label as big as Sub Pop, it feels right that the band is gaining proper recognition. Such is the case with Melbourne’sRolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, who have just signed to Sub Pop and released another single to add to their myriad of hits. This new single, “Julie’s Place,” comes from their forthcoming EP which is due out next spring, and while it has some polish to it the mix, it still retains that 70s pop vibe that we first fell for. Be sure to turn this one up loud and rejoice with the band.

Dig on New Aan

aanThe more I listen to Aan, the more I realize they’re crafting precisely what I’ve been looking for in my music. There are nods to late 90s indie rock, though the production is much improved from that era, not to mention the craftsmanship here is more expansive. I hear a natural stomp to this new tune, just before the group slows things down for a momentary bit of respite, and a closing burst that keeps me coming back for more. They release Dada Distractions via Party Damage Records on November 18th.

The Sloppy Heads Craft Timeless Pop Tune

sloppyheadsSometimes you walk into something looking to avoid the hype and hysteria, but in the case of Sloppy Heads, this new single is quite striking. The guitar almost warbles behind the vocals, and Ariella Stok has this incredible vocal performance that’s hard to pin down. There’s a youthful vibrance to it, yet each note seems to be so casually let go into the world; it’s also carefully punctuated by a male counterpart, so as to further the song’s development. You don’t hear pop music stretched out this way very often, and rarely do you hear it executed so perfectly. Shrimper Records will release Useless Smile on January 20th of next year.

Fresh New Scooterbabe Track

scooterbabe-by-krishna-inmula-1I’ve been a big fan of Scooterbabe since I stumbled across the group via an Athens connection. Recently, the band have begun ramping up their activity with the exciting news thattheir debut album, The Sorrow You’ve Been Toting Around, will be out on the November 4th. This new song peels away a bit of the indiepop influences to reveal a little bit of the late 90s Built to Spill and Nada Surf, which are huge moments in my personal listening experience…so of course I’m stoked on it. In a world where it seems like everyone is looking at revisionist music, this is possibly the most enchanting bit I’ve found. Pick up the record from Perfect Attendance and Jigsaw Records.

Premiere: Minor Moon Release Album

minormoonAmidst all the hubbub of Halloween week, you’re likely to need a little chill, which is why you want to unwinda little with this delightful track from Minor Moon tune. The core of the song gives the impression of forlorn Americana, but the special touch revolves around the warm hook of the chorus; it offers up a slightly different spin, enabling listeners to digest the careful craftsmanship. As the band looks to fill in more space, they layer the sound with ornate horns; I also like the little keyboard nod to Air, or at least that’s what my ears hear. Celebrate the release of the band’s new single this Friday, and look for What Our Enemies Know, their new album, on Jaunary 20th via Ruination Records.

ATX Spotlight: Fresh Music from Drakulas

drakulasPop punk definitely has a home in Austin, but it seems we’ve inherited a great bit of that from our friends up in the DFW/Denton area, especially if you give a listen to this brand new Drakulas track. The band is brandishing a blend of gritty pop punk akin to Texas vets Marked Men or Radioactivity…and this is not entirely a bad thing, as I’m clearly a fan of that sound. Their album, Raw Wave, hits stores on November 18th, and it’s shaping up to be something quite special. In what seems like a banner year for Austin music, it looks like we have another hit on our hands; look for the release from Dirtnap Records.

Brand New Mega Bog Track

megabogGone Banana was this great little effort that introduced many of us to Mega Bog, the project of Erin Birgy, and now that she’s solidified herself as an incredible talent, her new single is winning rave reviews. It’s no surprise, as the songwriting has always been there, but she’s crafted this elegance with her voice, still touching up space with bits of carefully bent strings and studio production. You’ll find it hard to pull yourself away from this tune, much as a bog would hold you still in its deep muck…though here your ears will ring with joy. Happy Together, her new effort, will be released on February 3rd via Nicey Music.

Banger From MOON

moon-photo-1I’m fairly certain that this single called “We’re So Close” from Los Angeles based MOON came out quite a long time ago, but it’s never been posted on ATH and it needs to be recorded that we approve. From the first time hitting play, you’ll realize you are in for a banger of a track. It hits pretty hard when transitioning from the softer verses into the rocking chorus complete with power chording guitars and rising vocals. Coming soon to a festival in your town!
