Slow Burning Music from Lucidlabrador

lucidlabWhen you first indulge in this brand new Lucidlabrador track, you’re likely going to find similarities to many of our great downtrodden troubadours. But, fall in there, then wait for the musical journey you’re about to take. They switch to a fuzzy bit of pop that’s sublime, just before they retreat into the soft underbelly of the tune. It draws out whilst drawing you in, captivating you with little twinkling elements lurking in the background. Looks like the group will have more delicious tunes for you to enjoy when the release their EP, Today is a Good Day for Friendship; it comes out on December 5th.

Show Pics: Mean Jolene Record Release

mean-jolene-release-03Just before the madness of Sound on Sound Fest (roundup and galleries coming soon), ATH records hosted a little get together at Cheer Up for Mean Jolene’s Salty.

Half of the band, Jolie and Adam, were still on a Cubs related high. What better way to celebrate a historic World Series win than by releasing a record? Will and Ben may or may not have been hungover. The band had too many friends and too much fun. Tiger tall boys. Tater tots. Satin jackets. Flying earrings.

Joining in on the festivities were Talkies, The Bond Twins, HeyBaby and Summer Salt, so pics after the break. Sorry to Summer Salt for hitting the wall after a long day.

Buzzed Rocker from Tim the Mute

lostsoundI always check in with Lost Sound Tapes, as you’ve got to keep an eye on the labels you love the most, which is how I discovered this really incredible number from Tim the Mute…the label’s most recent offering. I know this sounds weird, but imagine yourself listening to the world where the upbeat Neutral Milk Hotel tracks crash into the world of Robert Pollard; that’s the only explanation I can think of, but it’s the most fitting. You’ll find it to be one of the more endearing scuzzy rockers you’ll hear today, so grab the new album Take My Life…Please from the label now! You can also stream the whole album over HERE.

Check Out This Ditty from Holiday Ghosts

pinpalYou know I’ve long been a follower of the Art is Hard Records collective, and I think they hit it out of the proverbial ballpark with this Holiday Ghosts single. The track has a little bit of a soulful boogie to it, though it’s execution is a bit ramshackle. You’ll even hear a breakdown shuffle near the back end of the tune. Never a bad time when you’ve got hits that sound this good, so boogie down folks…and hopefully we get to hear more from this outfit.

Rainy Day Track from Harry Permezel

harrypermIt’s rather rainy in these parts, which definitely makes this new single from Harry Permezel the most fitting tune for my day. It’s little more than some bedroom loops with a guitar line and voice working on top of it, though that simplicity really allows for the song’s emotional impact to connect with the listener. Harry’s self-titled album is being released this week, so spend a little time with it to see if this is something you’d like to get to know a little more…I know I would.

Black Lizard Covers Cats of Transnistria

soliti5years_cover_bigSoliti Records is one of my favorite labels I’ve been able to befriend through running this site, and the label is celebrating five years as a label by releasing a combination wherein the band’s on the label cover other releases. For me, the highlight, at least from what I’ve heard is this great little cover of “Good Night” by Black Lizard (the original is from Cats of Transnistria). It holds onto the original’s soft beauty, but fills it out with a little more fuzzy distortion…leaving you with good things. The Soliti Five Years: My Brain Hurts A Lot Comp will come out on November 25th.

More Joyous Pop from Flower Girl

flowergirlSeems like every week Flower Girl keep unleashing hook-laden rock n’ roll in support of their forthcoming release, and as long as it’s as catchy as this one, I’m going to keep kicking out the jams. This track recalls a lot of early 00s indie rock, only taking from those forebears and making things even more fun. Looks to me like these guys are going to bring us all a whole lot of tunes to put on repeat when Tuck In Your Tie-Dye finally hits the streets at the end of this week via BUFU Records.
