Show Pics: Geographer @ The Mohawk (5/30)

Jeez. So I was walking the dog, thinking about all the photos left to edit from X Games Austin and I realized that I still owed Geographer a Show Pics post. After a great set at FFF8, I was looking for ward to checking out the band in a smaller venue, my home venue, The Mohawk. Joining them for the show was Idle Hands, ATH faves Empires and a great aftershow lineup of Hovvdy and Woozy.

Click through, peeps.

Thursday night at the Mohawk is looking like it’s shaping up to be the place to be as far as shows go around Austin. Headliners and Oklahomans Other Lives are touring in support of their latest effort, Rituals, which showed the band going in an sultry electronic direction and featured a ton of tracks I’m excited to see fleshed out in a live setting. Not to mention the chance to hear the rest of the bands’ stunning catalogue of dark orchestral rock music. Opening up for them are Dark Rooms (Dallas) and Riothorse Royal (L.A), the likes of which should bring a variety of sounds to the night. I’ve included tracks by both of them below to entice you to show up early to the Mohawk tomorrow night.

Introducing: Rice Milk

ricemilkI’ve only just caught on to the music being crafted by Rice Milk, and though they’ve got a few releases, they’re just now offering up the short Weird Year EP, I think it’s something that deserves a place in your listening rotation today.  There’s a simplicity at home on the EP, especially on the song that I’ve chosen to share with you.  Still, you’ll find that even in that basic guitar, drum, vocal approach, there’s an intoxicating element to the music; you’ll definitely have to go back and listen over and over again if you know what’s good for you. Good Food has released this on cassette, if you’re into collecting good tunes.

Fresh Day Wave Tune

11337002_401226620061420_3011181159598881531_oDay Wave made a big splash earlier this year with just one single, but he’s prepping his debut EP, which looks to continue on the early promise he showed. It’s got that dreamy surf quality to it, at least if you go off the latest single; it’s similar to the earliest works of Drums.  Some songs come at exactly the right time, and as things start to warm up here in Austin, I know what songs I’ll be playing at my next pool party. He’ll be self releasing his Headcase EP on July 17th, so get ready for some sweet summer tunes.

Blast Some Falling Stacks

stacksonstacksI’m feeling a little antsy and a little angsty, so this new album from Falling Stacks is the perfect place to find myself today.  The UK act seems to draw from all my favorite acts of days gone past, hitting vocal marks a la Dead Kennedys or stuttering discordant guitar licks a la Fugazi.  All that being said, No Wives, is not for the weak of heart; you’ll find a this underlying tension that has you on edge as the group knifes their way through the entire LP.  The album is out now via Battle Worldwide Recordings.

Psych Pop From Fine Points

fine-points-bandFine Points is a brand new project featuring a few members of San Francsico based group Sleepy Sun.  To get us all excited for the new material, the band is offering up this new single “Astral Season”.  You will likely notice some similar sonic qualities to Sleepy Sun here, featuring pop music with several dashes of psychedelic overtones throughout.

Fine Points will drop Hover via Dine Alone Records on July 17th.

What Do You Think Of This New Gardens & Villa Track?

332994_10150324822454759_200890353_oSanta Barbara’s Gardens & Villa are back today with a new album announcement and single titled “Fixations.” It’s got a nice little groove to it, as most Gardens & Villa tracks tend to, but it spans out into a partially buzzy space. Sure, there are the pulsing synths, but the guitar parts are garage-y and the vocals provide a nice touch of lightness to the mix that make for a breezy pop track. I’m enjoying the vibe on this one and will be looking out for more from the band as we get closer to their album release. Music For Dogs is out August 21st on Secretly Canadian.

Stripped Indie Rock From Head Clouds

11170316_1108549499161524_5691889641422261214_n

Head Clouds is a Melbourne act fronted by Jayke Maddison, and while they’re fairly under the radar right now that’s all about to change with this track, “New Light Of The Equinox.” What starts as a stripped down indie rock song, playing on the soft vocals of Maddison and gentle guitars soon transitions into what sounds to me like a mix between Grizzly Bear and The Walkmen, which means there’s everything to love about this sweet jam. Apparently this track is from an upcoming EP that the band’s been working on for a while, so keep your ears pricked for that. You can bet I’ll be posting about it.

Another Good One From Azure Blue

unnamed (2)Just as Azure Blue is a few weeks out from releasing his third studio LP in Beneath The Hill I Smell The Sea, Tobias Isaksson has it us once more with another new wave electro pop gem to tantalize us for this new record. “Tragedy & Changes,” sounds like a straight-from-the-eighties hit, complete with super faded and breathy vocals plus never ending drum machine beats that patter through the song. What I’m really digging though, is the very end of the song when some electric guitar sneaks its way into the electro pop mix and carries you out. Look out for the latest from Azure Blue that’s due out next week on June 15th through Fika Recordings.

Happy Diving Is Blowing Up

happyIt’s been a bit since we first wrote about Happy Diving, who back then were part of our friend’s stable over at Father Daughter Records.  But, the band have changed labels to Topshelf, though their sound is much the same, if not a touch louder.  They’ll still leave your ears pleasantly ringing with their distorted guitars swelling in the front of the mix, compacted by knifing guitar pieces that cut through that wall of noise.  Vocals hang in the background of the mix, calm and collected while the world seems to be crashing around the rest of the track.  Look for their So Bunted EP to come out on July 17th.
