Catch Up on Sugar Candy Mountain

shuggaOne of the end of year LPs that really caught me was Sugar Candy Mountain; it hit just as went on our little holiday break, and I’ve been steadily to Mystic Hits every since.  It takes the standard sound of modern psychedelic music, then adds touches of pop structures to make every track on the LP successful.  The listen sort of makes me wish we were enjoying some warm weather, but at least we have these tunes to help do the trick.  You can grab the LP from Royal Oakie as we speak.

New Tigercats Should Be Tasty

kittiesWhat? You can’t get enough of mellow indiepop goodness? Me either, which is why I’m really anticipating the new LP from Tigercats. The LP is titled Mysteries, and if you go off this single, it sounds like they’ll be doing their best to infuse a great deal of instrumentation into their style; this track has a nice little flute/piccolo added.  It’s also enjoyable because of the interplay between male and female vocal parts; that’s the sort of thing I’ll always stand behind when it’s done right. Look for the LP on February 2nd via Fortuna Pop.

The Latest from The Woolen Men

427246_476717059042868_337800856_nOkay, so this isn’t exactly the latest, but this tune from The Woolen Men slid in towards the end of the year, and for some reason, even though I noticed it, I hadn’t written a thing about it…so I had to continue with our tradition of including the band in our January coverage (every January since 13′).  This new track, or recent tune, comes from the band’s Rain Shapes EP, which is being tossed out by Loglady Records. There’s a blend of jangling indiepop, but it also has some Americana notes; it’s sort of a Northwest version of the Feelies.

Happy New Year from the IT Dept.

CaribouI promised a set of songs from the IT Department for your evening’s happenings. It has dance jams and down-tempo smoothness. It has stuff that was in our best of the year list and stuff that you may be hearing for the first time. Whether you use this for good or evil is up to you. Almost two hours, so plan accordingly…

While trolling for song links, I saw that Roger Sellers has a super fresh version of “Auld Lang Syne” up featuring The Deer. How cool its that? Naturally, it is batting clean up as the final spot on this list with the New Year’s theme. Enjoy your New Year’s with old friends, new friends *wink* and maybe even family. I prefer fambly.

May 2015 be better than 2014. Be you…

Song Premiere: TAFT Ready Groove Redundant

10858522_895904757117019_8497295956566305365_nJust before our holiday break we hit you up with a new TAFT track, and now we’re back to premiere this great single, “Pillars of Duh.” My ears hear this remarkable production, with just the right amount of vocals turned up in the front of the mix, while the musical landscape is carefully crafted behind Taft Mashburn’s striking voice.  As always with the band, the voice is hard to ignore, following in the steps of dynamo’s such as Kevin Barnes; the music plays its part working in the vein of elegant art pop, highlighting the musicianship from the group.  Their new LP, Groove Redundant, will be released on Punctum Records on February 10th!
