A.A. Bondy – Believers

Rating: ★★★½☆

For years now, A.A Bondy has been riding the waves of undiscovered artist; while garnering some devoted fans, he hasn’t exactly achieved instant fame and success of the independent world. However, as per the intrigue of his last album and the original detailed work of his very first effort, this hasn’t seemed to hurt Bondy in the slightest; he is still a master at his folksy craft.

There isn’t a song on this album more dauntingly beautiful than “Skull and Bones,” which crops up third in the listening experience. From the moment it begins, there is a foreboding feeling instilled by the effervescent bass and guitar combo. It’s an unsettling sound that gives a sense of instability and then A.A himself jumps in with those cautionary vocals that add to the darkness of this twisting song.  At a little over three minutes long, it jumps right in and grabs your focus right from the start, and then pulls you further and further in, and by the time the looped vocals of the chorus flood your ears, you can’t help but notice the elegant poignancy that the track dangles out there for you to snatch up on repeated listens. A.A Bondy knows this, and includes a short, cleansing song after it, as to break away from its quiet resonance and move back to his more traditional folk style.

This is a lovely change for Bondy, and though it’s unparalleled on this album, it is certainly not the extent of good songs to be found on Believers. You have late stunners such as “The Twist,” that is just dripping in delectable folk elements and yet it still has a quick pace that doesn’t allow it to be as heavy as earlier songs. This pacing allows it to sink in slower, and not become a bogged down album. By no means is it fluffy pop fuzz, but it is not so thick that it becomes a drag to listen to.

For a third release, this album is very consistent, at least at first glance. It seems that Bondy is just destined to remain under the radar in his work, which is not necessarily a bad thing, as he is currently a man with three solid albums, each of which with its golden moments. This being said, I can definitely see Believers becoming more with time as it ripens in the minds of listeners. Regardless, it’s still worth a good listening to; time will tell if it will be something extraordinary.

Free EP from Netherfriends

You want something creative and tasty? Try listening to Netherfriends.  After the 50 Songs 50 States project, the group has now constructed an entire EP based around Harry Nilsson samples.  While it might push some buttons as sort of kitsch pop, it’s definitely pushing the envelope in regards to the music we can create with electronics pushing us into the future.  Just go to the group’s BANDCAMP page and search around; you’ll surely find something interesting, and the odds are it’s going to be something good.  If you’re looking for something that challenges your opinion of traditional pop, look no further, Netherfriends is here.

New Music from Black Box Revelation

This isn’t what one expects to come out of Belgium, at least not what comes to my mind.  But, as I’ve jammed to the latest EP from Black Box Revelation, I’m not going to complain.  They’ve got hints of American blues and soul, but the slightest hint of garage-iness provides the band with exactly the right amount of grit to make them more than memorable.  The band’s got their Shiver of Joy EP out now, and they’ve got plans for a full-length soon after.  Oh, and if you Austinites dig their sound, you can catch them when they stop on by on October 1st over at the ND.

Free Album Download From Skeleton Dead

The Skeleton Dead are a London based duo that have been on my radar for while that I am just getting around to sharing with you guys.  You’ll immediately notice the minimalistic approach to songwriting, and it honestly may take awhile to get into, but give it a few listens and you’ll grow to love the sounds.  We have new song “Are You Going to Overreact?” below which will hopefully entice you into downloading the band’s new self-titled album for free over on bandcamp.  Hell, it’s free so why not go on and do it kids.

More New Music from Pujol

How much more can we really tell you about Nashville’s Pujol?  Nothing much reall, other than you need to be jamming to this kid. He’s signed on with stalwart label, Saddle Creek Records, who will be releasing his EP, Nasty, Brutish and Short on October 18th. It’s gritty, but it’s not something you can immediately pass of as some sort of garage re-hash.  Yea, there’s touches of that, but the overwhelming quality seems rooted in far more than some lo-fi phenomenon. So, if you didn’t listen to us the first time, maybe now you’ll get into Pujol. You’ll also find the band tearing it up at Fun Fun Fun Fest this year, so yet another reason to get your ears ready.

Friday Top 5: ACL Departure Soundtrack

I have a feeling that like most of you out there, the headliners for ACL aren’t the real reason for going to the festival. At first glance, this year may be a bit weak, but even early walk-ins will find excellent acts like Cults, Telekinesis, The Head and the Heart, The Antlers, An Horse, and so on. The middle of the lineup is great with Cut Copy, Kurt Vile, Smith Westerns, The Moondoggies, TV on the Radio, The Walkmen, Broken Social Scene, Empire of the Sun – I could go on. The headliners are left with the task of clearing the venue, the triggers for the long walk back to the car, the soundtrack for a mosey. Here are my Top 5 (anticipated) songs from this year’s Headliners to make me head out.

New Track from CoverGirl

You know that if something sounds good, the odds are that it is probably going to end up in the hands of Captured Tracks.  They’re at it again, grabbing onto new UK up-and-comers, CoverGirl.  Listening to their first single, you can tell that the band’s got a few things to figure out, but even if they don’t, there’s a great quality to their introduction to the masses.  At first, there’s a bit of indie haunting, but as the pace begins to pick up, you can hear some audible chaos.  It’s definitely got a foggy dynamic, and only time will tell where these guys will end up, sound-wise. For now, just sit back and enjoy.

Great Dream Pop from The Notes

It seems we get a lot of surf-pop and dream-pop nowadays with male singers, and I’m definitely okay with that, but I don’t mind having a swinging female voice maneuver in and out of these tracks as well. The Notes, like Seapony, do a great job of doing just that, and this British bunch has just put out their brand new album, Fearless, which you can grab for FREE, if you so choose. The title track’s got a little bit of haze, a little bit of noise, and a slew of pop bubbling beneath it all. Give these guys a chance to win you over this Friday.

More New Music from Blouse

Portland-based Blouse have been making their way around the Interwebs with a slew of recent 7″ releases, the most recent coming on Sub Pop. As it stands now, the band’s signed up with Captured Tracks for the release of their self-titled debut, which will be released on November 1st.  This latest single begins with the quality of a warped recording, but if you can withstand that, there’s some blissful pop moments surfing thoughout the song, making for an elegany little listen.  Game, Blouse(s).

More New Music From Matt Pond PA

Matt Pond PA continues their extremely hard working ethic with more and more music coming your way.  This new tune called “Someone’s Daughter” is a beautiful track that really conveys that intimate style we’ve come to know from the band.  The song appears on the soundtrack for the new film Lebanon, PA which is scored by band members Matt Pond and Chris Hansen.  For now, we’ve just got a stream for you and are hoping to offer a download soon.
