Monsoon Drop Don’t Move Video

Felt like we should hit up Thursday by starting off with some catchy hooks and blasting riffs! Good thing we’ve got this tune from Athens’ (Georgia) Monsoon. This song works back and forth between a sedate ballad and a hook laden pop rock tune, adding in these great little details that give the tune a bit of flare. Plus, just as you’re hooked on the style, there’s this closing change in direction, hinting at some of the artistry that’s lurking in their forthcoming Ghost Party LP. The album will be out next year, so for now, you can sit back and enjoy this fresh single!

New Video from Robert Sotelo

Robert Sotelo will be releasing Celebrant in early November, and with that date approaching, there’s another new video to tease you into buying the LP. I love how it opens up with this muted glitch, evolving into a layered glitch and melodic pulse that drives the song’s tension. Then comes Sotelo, hanging his voice in that sort of darkened pop expanse, swirling with melody, bravado and hints of drama. The chorus hits on these playful notes, lifting the tune briefly. All that said, the song is about longing and protection with Robert saying the track is about feeling “overly paternal towards a parent,” which becomes increasingly difficult in the current climate. And just to say…I wish more people wrote pop tunes like this. Celebrant is out November 12th via Upset the Rhythm.

Me Rex Share Never Graduate Single

You know when you just want something big and poppy, something that seems just perfectly built for you? Well, I present you with the new single from London’s Me Rex. If you’re into British pop rock like Martha, you’re going to want to spend some time here; you might also want to go back and revisit the band’s other releases. Here, we get a little synth into before the song hits hyperdrive into euphoria…backing vocals swell with these magical hooks that dig deep into your soul. Myles McCabe has this great delivery within the confines of the song to kind of tie it all together; it comes across as spoken and call, straining when it hits the song’s rising tension. If you dig this, look for the band’s Pterodactyl EP in February of next year via Big Scary Monsters. Also, fun fact. Pterodactyls are not dinosaurs. Duh.

Endearments Share Empress Single

Some reason, I’ve just been wanting to spin and dance and smile; I guess I’m just fed up with feeling fed up. For me, I always turn to music, and this Endearments tune is a bit of an early morning bop to slid you into your midweek grind. There’s that sort of casual smoothness to it, sort of slinking its way into your life; it has a touch of that sort of crystalline synth pop mood. When it hits the chorus, it’s a quick little burst of euphoria, emphasized by some backing vocal tracks to push it forward. And each time, it crawls back to the calming waters of late night electronic pop, perfect for the late night playlist you made for your friends. This track appears on Father of Wands, out November 5th.

Show Preview: Julien Baker w/ Dehd @ Stubb’s 10/27

The shows start coming and they don’t stop coming! Tomorrow night, we’ve got a great lineup once again gracing the stage at Stubb’s, and one that will make you come out early. Headlining the evening, we have Julien Baker, who dropped a lovely album earlier this year called Little Oblivions. Her masterful songwriting, heavily emotive lyrics, and vocals that can cut you deep should make for a wonderful evening in the gravel at Stubb’s. But before you start crying at the club, make sure to get there early for openers, Dehd, who I’m stoked for. This Chicago trio dropped one of my favorite albums of 2020 in Flower of Devotion, which is a no-skips-post-punk ripper. Take a listen to some tunes below and then scoop some tickets while you can!

Show Pics: Idles @ Stubb’s

After over 2 years of being a home body and living with anxiety, mixed with a dash of unease, it was an overwhelmingly cathartic experience to get out of the house to see live music again. Seeing old faces, visiting old haunts, and of course being treated to an incredible live set by one of the best live bands around, Idles. I’d say BGray and I were like little kids going to a show for the first time. Hit the jump for a few thoughts and some fancy photos from BGray.

Penelope Isles Deliver Another Hit

The Brighton based brother/sister songwriting duo Penelope Isles have long been a running favorite around the ATH offices, so naturally we are incredibly excited for their upcoming album. Hopefully you will share in our excitement with the band’s latest single entitled “Terrified” found below. For me, these new singles, and this new album, truly show a band growing into their sound with more pop sounds blended in with their already dreamy, sort of shoe gazy, indie rock vibe. This will likely be near the top of our year end lists.

Penelope Isles will release new album Which Way to Happy on November 5th via Bella Union. Pre-orders are live now.

Le Pain Drop Obvious to You

When you drop names like Stereolab and Alvvays in your band description, you better be able to back it up. Le Pain did so with their first big single this past summer, and they’re back on the grind with a fresh single on the horizon. This single’s a little more open, using some more casual indie rock guitar notes akin to early Real Estate, creating this more expansive vibe as opposed to their early saccharine treats. But, the creamy vocals from sisters Madeline and Olivia intertwining still provide that intoxicating brand of pop that is sure to have folks salivating as they await news on a full length. We’ll let you know when we hear.

Zinskē Share Horseface Josey

While the Chris Lipczynski and Zinskē might not be a household name just yet, I’d love to have a chance to change your mind as the band set up for the release of their debut LP, Murder Mart. For starters, Chris has this incredibly distinctive voice, bordering on grizzled, though careful to cling to melodic structures; his delivery, particularly in the chorus segments provides this extra layer of listener satisfaction. Musically, this is the spot on example of good old-fashioned indie rock. You get dueling guitar lines, riffs that drop between distorted speaker-busters and jangling angular cuts. I love how the song seems to get loud as possible without ever getting incredibly loud…plus you get this little guitar noodle just after the 1 minute mark. Everything about this, from the craft to the production just screams that this is perfect (from now on). Press play, there’s no need to go further, that other stuff just isn’t this cool!

Blushing Announce Possessions LP

Long long ago, in a galaxy here in Austin, we helped release one of Blushing‘s earlier EPs; they’ve since gone onto bigger things, and now the news is out that they’ve signed with Kanine to release their new LP, Possessions. The first single is a delight, not just because it features Miki Berenyi (of Lush), but also because it shows continued growth in their sound. I love the various movements within the song itself; this song’s got those dreamy jangles to open up the score, but also fades right into this gritty indie rock feel, before splitting wide open to allow for Miki’s voice to drape across the sonic groundwork they’ve put before you. Should be exciting to hear the whole LP when it comes to fruition; the new LP drops in February of next year.
