This year, the 4th of July falls on a Thursday, which means this Wednesday (7/3) is really your Friday…sort of. That means an excuse to hit the town in the middle of the week, and there’s a night of great tunes going down at Stubb’s Jr. If you haven’t heard of Charly Bliss, you’ve been clearly living under a rock for the past few years, as they’ve been making waves in the indie rock world, especially as of late with their killer sophomore LP,Young Enough, which will surely be topping some ‘Best of’ lists this year. Power pop with high energy vocals await you for the low low price of 15 dollars if you buy a ticket today, plus it’s inside and air conditioned, so there’s really no reason not to show up. Mesmerizing New Track From Tummyache

Previously having made a name for herself a pop/folk artist, Soren Bryce has stepped away from the genre to record under the name tummyache. A welcome change to her older music, the Amarillo native has created something truly beautiful with her debut single “In Between”. It’s rare to find a song which can progress as well as this one with a quiet, stripped down number slowly building into a gut wrenching and powerful final minute. Raw emotions seep through the track and one can’t help but feel it all.

Bryce’s new group tummyache will release a debut EP entitled Humpday later this year on Poor Man Records.

Bright Indie Pop From Mermaidens

It’s a nice and sunny day here in Austin and I think a bright, poppy tune would suit the atmosphere just fine. My desires for such a tune comes today by way of New Zealand based artist Mermaidens and their new song “I Might Disappear”. It’s perfect for fans of Alvvays if they could bring a bit more of an edge with crunchy guitars coming in from time to time. I hope you dig it.

Mermaidens will release new album Look Me in the Eye on September 9th via Flying Nun Records.

Belle and Sebastian Announce Soundtrack

Now, I enter this period of Belle and Sebastian with a little trepidation, as I was not a huge fan of 2002’s Storytelling release. But, I feel like the announcement of The Days of Bagnold Summer score comes with a delicious gem streaming below. It begins with this rolling tension and brooding bass line before twinkling guitar notes sparkle and shine in step with Stuart’s voice. I don’t know if it’s the score mentality or the current mind to songwriting, but there seems to be the perfect amount of space left between verses and choruses; it makes everything seem so gran that I can’t help but to actually be excited for this release. The soundtrack will be out on September 13th via Matador Records.

Jetstream Pony Share Mitte

Okay, so I don’t normally go out of my way to share a demo, but I absolutely loved Jetstream Pony‘s Self-Destruct EP, so I’m rather excited to hear they’re working on wrapping up an LP for the near future…sharing this demo from one of the tracks. I loved the heavy tones at work in this version; it seems like the band’s really ready to unleash a wall of noise on us. But, as is their style, the vocals have this gentle curl to them, leaving you with that juxtaposed pop sensibility that makes their songs so enjoyable. This is still a version at work, but other than some mixing, it sounds pretty solid to me!

Good show last night, good shows this weekend, but going to watch the footie in Houston. This week’s HANW track is from Missions, the second single from the pending Holodeck Records release Subcreature due August 2nd. It is an Italian disco synth laden piece of bliss with buried vocoder vocals. Zone out for a bit at the office and dream of tallboys and new vinyl smell.

Show Review: Appleseed Cast @Barracuda (6/27)

Myself and Mr. Gray pretended like we were young again on a cool Thursday night in Austin and made it out to Barracuda to see the famed Appleseed Cast. We talked some soccer, shared too many beers, and discussed the validity of The Cast music as a soundtrack to major life events. It was a great bill with many hits played. Grungey Post-Rock From Laundrette

For as much as I love a good bedroom pop tune, there’s a lot to be said about a band who starts in this humble way and then fleshes out the sound to a more expansive mix. Such is the case on this new track from Laundrette, out of Cardiff. “Southerndown,” starts off as a slow moving beast, creeping along in shoegazey, hazy fashion with simply the vocals and some ambient noises filling the space. After a minute and a half or so, the track begins to build, and guitars and drums enter, resulting in a post-rock climax. It’s a great tune for ramping up your energy, which is exactly the kind of track that’s perfect for a Friday. Take a listen below.

New Music from Remington Super 60

The history of Remington Super 60 goes back over 20 years ago, and while that alone is remarkable in this day and age, what matters most is that they sound just as delightful now as they did back in ’98. I think the first immediate comparison that comes to mind is that ground popularized by Camera Obscura; it has that same structure of indiepop, bringing in classic pop sounds and updating them in a more modern fashion. Of course, there’s this natural warmth here too, which almost makes me wish it was Winter time, so I could sit by a fire and let the magic of this track do the rest of the work for me. Look for a new EP from the group later this Fall.
