Check Out Jayomi

Some bands slide under the radar, but luckily I was able to stumble upon Seattle’s Jayomi, as I’m totally in love with their Wet Burrito EP. The track below has this bouncing indiepop goodness with those dancing guitar lines that glisten in the front of the mix; you should be tapping your toes within the first 20 seconds. Distortion kicks in and it sounds like the band’s going to bound off, but they pull off, letting the guitar trickle down for the ceiling so as to drape some dreamy vocals across your lap. It’s like the perfect blend of the dream/indie pop world, with the rest of the EP leaving you with bits just as promising.

New Track from Brother Sports

Just as I was dropping a note on what was cool in Austin, Brother Sports snuck in behind me and dropped this great little tune on Friday. The vocals sort of remind me of the Growlers, sort of that wayward casual cool. But, musically, they’re off in their own world, blending these dreamy guitar notes with a heavy rhythm; I love how there’s this guitar line that seems to sort of ride across the track rather than just get played…you’ll have to listen to hear what I hear. Be sure you stick around beyond 3 minutes because they break things down, hammering their sound in your ear as they reach some psychedelic breakdown to close the track out. Another day, another rad tune in Austin.

Checking in on Austin

There’s just always so much going on, I felt like I should throw in a small write-up of some things I’ve been jamming here recently. Word on the street is that the Daphne Tunes and Xetas LPs are done, Abram Shook has a new LP on the way..we here at ATH Records also have somethings in the works. And, other people just keep pumping out hits. So hit the jump to check in on Austin with me.

TARA Has Something Special

TARA are in the midst of a five single cycle, dropping a track ever so often, and below we have the second of those five, perfectly letting you drift far off into the weekend. It’s almost like a post-rock piece, fuzzy and awash with these ambient guitar sounds while the rhythm section sort of propels us all forward. Wes Deimling’s voice is lighter than air, almost added as a textural element to really build the song’s depth. It’s a hypnotic number that flirts with a plethora of genres, ultimately just landing in the realm of great pop music that hopefully keeps you coming back for more.

Ryan Traster Shares Lost in a Sound

You ever press play on a track and immediately feel like you’re home; you immediately get that feeling of maximum comfort? Well, when I press play on this new Ryan Traster single, that’s exactly the place where it transports me. Listening through repeated times, you can hear these classic 80s left-of-the-dial pop touches in the balladry, but I can also hear a little bit of that country tinge that’s painted all across the tune. And, considering that Traster has only recently recovered from a damaged vocal cord, his voice sounds spectacular; it carries just the right amount of warmth, so as to slide right into the landscape of the track itself. You deserve to feel good today, so listen to this track. If you like it, it appears on Ryan’s new LP, Choses Obscures, out on July 19th via Slow Start Records.

Show Preview: Operators @ 3Ten Tonight!

Blue Wave was one of our favorite records of 2016. Radiant Dawn is well on its way to getting the plays from all of us at ATH to make the top albums of 2019. Operators is Dan Boeckman’s currently active project; Dan is a very nice person to meet and talk to about music and all the other things. Devojka, Sam Brown, and Dustin Hawthorne make things whole and this band puts out an amazing level of jam live. I am salivating at hearing them fill the speakers at 3Ten. Get tickets here or at the door, a sample below from the previous tour of one of my favorite jams.

Straight Rocker From Gaffa Tape Sandy

Nathan and I developed a love affair for English based band Gaffa Tape Sandy a couple of years ago and we’ve been eagerly awaiting more music from the band ever since. Somehow we missed new single “Headlights” dropped back in March, but luckily the band have another new single called “So Dry” ready to share today. To be perfectly honest, this is exactly what I needed today as I delve through new music full of bleeps, bloops and effected vocals. Not here, this trio again delivers a powerful track mixing all the best edgy elements of The Thermals with the sensible song construction of a band like Weezer, but with even better melodies. I love it.

Gaffa Tape Sandy will release new EP Family Mammal on August 9th via Alcopop! Records.

Lina Tullgren Announces Free Cell

It’s been a few years since Lina Tullgren shared their debut with the world, but today news comes our way that they’re ready to drop a new LP, Free Cell, in our laps. In the story of the album, it seems that Lina was isolated for much of the writing, forced to grapple with songwriting in their own manner; you can sort of feel that solitude in this very single, though it offers up these bits of light as glimmers of hope hanging in your ears. Personally, I’m really drawn to the guitar work on this; they mess with time signatures and traditional manners of song, particularly in the closing minute. Free Cell already sounds so full of promise that I can’t wait, but I’ll have to, as its not out until August 23rd via Captured Tracks.

Sarah Bethe Nelson Shares Video for Weird Glow

I cannot stop playing this new tune from Sarah Bethe Nelson; I know that’s hyperbole, but seriously, I just want to listen to this track all day. It has this light approach to guitar pop that walks a fine line between indiepop and power-pop, though it probably leans more towards the power side of things. Her voice has this warmth to it, while also holding onto this natural sense of freedom; I envision it like that feather in Forrest Gump, rising and falling, blowing wherever it wants to blow. The Weird Glow LP will be released this Friday courtesy of the fine folks over at Burger Records.

Breezy Indie Pop from Mauno

Mauno is a two piece (with help) who will be releasing an LP of their delightfully weird pop tunes at the beginning of August. From that release, they’ve just dropped “Vampire,” which is a lovely and light indie rock tune. What I love the most about this tune is the vocal delivery. Nick Everett has a melancholic, lukewarm voice, which is sweetened by Eliza Niemi’s addition during the choruses. The building, but still soft percussion and guitars are equally as compelling, and I’ve been back to listen to this track about 10 times. If you dig the track below, you should definitely check out this video of Eliza Niemi and Nick Everett attempting to sing along with this track whilst on the last 3 minutes of an hour long ride on a stationary bike. They keep it together pretty well! Pre-order Really Well here before it’s out August 2. Oh, and lucky for you here in Austin, they’re playing Cheer Ups on July 2!
