Painted Palms is a band that we’ve really gotten into over the last year with their upbeat, catchy singles that are continually ringing in our ears. To say we’re excited to see the group during SXSW would be a major understatement. We’re pumped. Founding father of the band Chris Prudhomme was kind enough to answer our burning questions and his responses can be found below.
Well, we’re rolling into the dreaded holiday weekend that haunts a lot of people, but what better way to spend your Valentines Day by watching a great show, either with your loved one, or finding one. We’re really proud to be part of the Austin Music Blogger Awards; it’s going to be a huge success celebrating the Austin music community. While it may not be perfect, we’re doing our best to make it an event that everyone enjoys. So with that in mind, we caught up via email with Jess Williamson, as she tours in support of her recent effort, Native State; she’s nominated for Best Solo Artist. She had a great 2013, and looks like 2014 is shaping up to be another solid year for her. She’ll also be playing at the awards show, so be sure to pick up your tickets HERE.

SXSW comes earlier and earlier every year doesn’t it? Prepared or not, the festival is right around the corner and of course we’re going to get you ready as best we can. Interviews are a great way to get a varying perspective from band and I’m going to kick mine off today with one featuring Brooklyn upstart Clouder. You want to keep Austin weird? Well, then the best way to do it is by realizing how great our odd-ball pop bands are. The latest in the line of quirky music comes to us via Party Plants, who’ve just released a new EP. Honestly, it reminds me of of the better parts of Presidents of the USA, which really isn’t a knock by any means. There’s a definitive bounce to the tunes as well, giving the feeling a bit of liveliness that’s much needed to entertain in a live setting. The band has also been building quite a name for themselves by playing all over town, with no bad reviews coming our way. You can grab the EP HERE.
SXSW is just a month away, and we’re already getting rather antsy. We decided to try and squeeze in as much coverage of the many bands coming into town as we could, so we sent off a bunch of interview questions to bands we think you need to keep an eye on. You want to do what!?! Many bands in the past have decided at one time or another to take the leap and change their name after copyright issues, lack of hits on google search, etc. Today we’ve been told that local hit makers The Baker Family are moving on from their old ways and officially going by Young Tongue. I personally think the change is for the better, but of course I never would have told them that before today…. So the band begin their new adventure with a new single called “Cat Calls” which can be found below. I’d call it a great, driving, indie rock number that certainly won’t let anyone forget about these guys after the rebranding.
Young Tongue will be celebrating the release of their new single at Red 7 on February 22nd. More info here.

Weekends in Austin always make it hard to pick a good show, but this Wednesday you’ve got a lot of really incredible options to choose from. The other night I was hanging with our boys Grape St, who always put on an excellent show, and they advised me to keep an eye on Captive, their opening act. What I caught was this minimalist dark wave act, that came across like a mix between early Cure and the popper moments of Joy Division. They use sterile drum beats and propulsive bass lines to affect your emotional investment, and the vocals definitely are spot on. There’s not a whole lot of information out there, but with Austin’s music scene rising, these guys are sure to be part of that rise.

It’s the weekend folks, and that means for a great deal of us our responsibilities go out the window; we can go out and party! What better way to hit up the town than by atttending some great musical events across the city of Austin?
