Austin Spotlight: The Villas

villasPRESSphotoA simple search on ATH with the terms The Villas will return quite a few hits spotlighting this Austin band.  That being said, you know that we’ve already given them the ATH stamp of approval long ago.  This new track “Natural Selection” is what I would call a classic and catchy indie-pop tune.  You won’t hear any crazy sort of experimental things going on here, just some great rockin’ pop sounds that will have you chanting along after a few listens.  Hope you enjoy.

Austin Spotlight: Summer Swells

944816_682268098470608_177123419_nOur apologies to those in Austin who knew about Summer Swells before we did.  This shit happens sometimes man.  With that out of the way, check out this track from the local boys called “House on the Edge of a Hill”.  To me, the band combines this crazy mixture of The Walkmen’s best guitar melodies with modern country twang.  Sounds like Austin to me.  If you’re a fan of the tune, check out more from these guys on their bandcamp page with recent EP Old Gold

Austin Spotlight: Swim Team Release EP

coverAustin’s got a great garage/punk scene, a solid Americana/folk scene, but it has always lacked a really great indiepop scene, despite having tons of great acts that’ve followed the genre.  Hopefully Swim Team will find some success, and things will start to change.  They’re creating these beautiful little pieces of dreamy pop that allow listeners to wander wistfully through their own minds.  They just released their self-titled EP, and I think that it’s one of the hidden gems of the city, so I opted to push it out there for people.  You can currently grab it for free, so be prepared to enjoy three great tunes.

Austin Spotlight: Diego McCartney

5a6b9325ca13a9d1-youtubeprofilepicAs I’ve previously mentioned, I feel like Austin is really make a strong resurgence with the high number of quality musicians we are currently churning out.  The last few years have really produced some memorable artists for me and I’m hoping we can continue that momentum going.  Moving us in the right direction is new and upcoming songwriter Diego McCartney.  Apparently Diego has been making music for quite some time on his own and has just now decided to offer his beautiful tunes up to the world.  This one, “Found in Few”, is fairly simple at first, but incredibly powerful after a few more listens.  The gentle guitar strumming mixed in with the perfect, emotional delivery of the vocals creates a really special moment here.  Enjoy.

Diego has a few more tunes over on his soundcloud page.  Say hi or drop him a line on his website.

Austin Spotlight: The Roosevelts

1401137_608671852502320_1973374008_oSure, I like the heavier side of Austin’s musical world, but that doesn’t mean I’ll turn a cheek when faced with the poppier side of things, which is why I wanted to give a shout out to The Roosevelts.  They’ve released Cold Sheets, their new EP, which offers listeners a glimpse at the band’s blend of Americana and modern pop music; it’s the kind of music that’s capable of crossing musical borders and uniting listeners from all walks of life.  The band will be playing a release show at the Empire Control Room this Saturday, so if your ears are digging what you hear, then I think its best you make it out…assuming your not frozen!

Show Preview: Nightlands @ Mohawk (12.3)

Nightlands

Date Tuesday, December 3rd
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Mohawk

Winter weather unfortunately puts a damper on bands traveling into Austin to put their music on display, but there’s a few great acts coming in, like Nightlands blowing into town on Tuesday night. The group is still pushing the sounds off their most recent release, Oak Island, which was well-received across the board.  I’ve always appreciated the way the project incorporates these organic sounds into these dreamscapes that mesmerize listeners.  And if that wasn’t enough, locals Holy Wave and RF Shannon will be supporting on the night.  It’s cheap, it’ll be good, you’ve got no choice: be there.
