Show Preview: Mt. Eerie @ the Parish (9.27)

Date Thursday, September 27th
Location The Parish
Doors 900 PM
Tickets $12 @ Transmission

There are some venues that seem to be created for certain bands, and I whole-heartedly feel that the Parish is here to host acts like Mt. Eerie.  Phil Elvrum’s work, either with the Microphones, or with Mt. Eerie, has always been intimate and gentle.  I can’t imagine another place that would be as suited to host Phil’s work on Thursday, as the sound at the Parish is definitely going to bring you closer to Elvrum’s music.  He’s already released two great albums this year, Clear Moon and Ocean Roar, and he’ll be bringing those tunes to life for you.  If you’re in need of something emotionally affecting, then you need to make your way to see Phil on Thursday night.

New Tune from My Jerusalem

I love a smoky voice, especially when you drape it over solemn tunes.  The latest tune from local Austin act My Jerusalem has that exact perfect vocal I look for, even including a nice little pop raise in the vocal during the chorus.  Otherwise, the track treads the water with a careful guitar line, some light flourishes of instrumental accompaniment and a thoughtful drum beat.  It’s great to see an Austin band crafting this sort of music, which definitely seems able to escape the confines of our local scene. You can hear this tune and others on the band’s upcoming record, Preachers, which is being released by The End Records on October 9th.

New Rocker from Residual Kid

Seeing as our site’s based here in Austin, we’ve gotta help spread the word on the bands coming out of our town.  I’m happy to toss out this new track from local upstarts Residual Kid.  Keep in mind, these dudes are all super young (I mean super), so we should all be impressed out the sounds they’re creating, especially after a bit of a line-up change.  They’ve got a new EP coming out titled Friend, and this is one of the featured tunes from the release…which hits the streets on October 9th.  Check out this catchy fuzzed out rocker from these young guns.

More New Tunes from the Calm Blue Sea

One of the great Austin bands that are slowly making their way out of our fair city is Calm Blue Sea.  We’ve really been impressed with the work they’ve done for their upcoming record, Arrivals & Departures, which hits stores October 9th via Modern Outsider Records. Their latest single has the group in full sprawl, though they approach quietly from the onset, building walls of melodic noise that crash upon your ears.  Little hints of vocals scattered in the mix demonstrate just how far the group’s come since their early days. Wish these dudes the best of luck.

Show Preview: Dirty Projectors @ Emos (8/2)

Date Thursday, August 2nd
Location Emos
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $20 from C3

I’m sure this show probably doesn’t need much of an introduction, as it’s one of the hottest tickets around, but we thought we’d give you a friendly reminder about one of the big shows coming into town on Thursday.  If you’ve recovered from Divine Fits at Beerland, you should definitely check out Dirty Projectors, the indie art-pop act who’ve been making waves pretty much since their inception.  They come into town fresh off the recent release of Swing Lo Magellan, their latest record. And as if that wasn’t enough, you can also, and should, catch the marvelous opening duo, Wye Oak.  It’s been awhile since Civilian came out, but just hearing those songs live brings everything back to life.  We’ll definitely see you there folks!

Great New Jam from She Sir

I really feel like there’s a lot of great music being made in Austin lately.  I know, that should come as no surprise, but some years are weaker than others, but this new jam from locals She Sir is a guaranteed hit, promising us more great music from the group in the near future. They’re recording with Erik Wofford, which always seems to guarantee good things for bands here in town, and the forthcoming record from the group should definitely benefit from his work.  Here’s a track they’re giving out as a teaser, with just a small catch: it’s a new track, but it won’t be featured on the album.  Get it while it’s hot; it’s definitely hot.

New Slow Burner from Birds & Batteries

We brought you a jamming electro pop hit from Birds & Batteries, but with their record, Stray Light, drawing nearer to its August 7th release date, more music is coming your way.  Instead of hitting you over the head with dancy goodness, this tune really builds throughout its entirety.  Electronic flourishes come in and out, and the vocals calmly float atop the entire mix.  It’s definitely an escapist sort of feel, if you’re into that sort of thing.  Pretty stoked on the band’s diversity at this point, so the record should be a hit too.

The band will also be at Swan Dive in Austin on August 26th.

New Jams from Sleep Good

It’s always great when you realize one of your favorite local acts is putting out new music.  Sleep Good has been quite, at least with recorded tunes, since  2010, but I just figured out that they’ve recently dropped their new Monsanto 7″.  It’s definitely a gem, and I’m loving the A-Side “Summer Explosion.”  You’ll hear some soaring vocals fitting to an Austin summer, and my personal favorite is the way the guitar sounds here, with just hints of hip movement. I’m glad to see these guys are back, and I look forward to catching their show over at the Mohawk on August 3rd.
