Cranking That New Variety Tune

If you know what’s good for you, you already listened to this Variety jam last week via Post-Trash, but, seeing as the band’s the new project from Borzoi‘s Rhys Woodruff (an ATX treasure), we had to give our love to the song as well. I’m enamored with the way that the drums and jingling guitar lines give into this tune’s anxiety; this feels like the more dangerous brand of what Omni’s been doing over the last several years. Woodruff’s got this indifferent curl on the vocals , creating this aura of nonchalance that completely runs in contrast to their surroundings. Austin fans can catch the band playing this Friday at Hotel Vegas, with a few other dates scattered at the beginning of February.

Fantastic Purple Spots Announce Vibrations Now EP

Due to unforeseen circumstances, namely having another kid and moving homes, I kind of pulled back on the ATH Records label after the Love Burns cassette. But, new year, and I’ve got things running again, today announcing a new digital EP from Fantastic Purple Spots. The Austin act has been on my mind for a bit, having discovered them after their eponymous LP from the Winter of 2022. We’ve been in touch since those early days, and the band are allowing me to work with them on their excellent new Vibrations Now EP. Their sound is somewhere between pastoral pop and psychedelia, allowing you to let your mind swirl with the mixture of sounds you’ll hear in each track. Their Vibrations Now EP will be officially out on January 26th, but you can stream the title track below!

Large Brush Collection Share Arm’s Length

As the Austin scene begins its year, one of the acts on our radar is Large Brush Collection, who will drop Off Center at the end of the month. Led by Nora Predey, the group’s sound twists and turns around the folk ethos that permeates Texas music. That said, the construction of their work, as well as some of the finer brushstrokes across this single, indicate a dedication more aligned with post-rock. Drum work rolls through casually, carefully traipsing through the grasses of the flute and ornate guitar lines, all of it centered around the majesty of Predey’s voice. There’s even some sharp-edged guitar bursts, faintly furthering an allusion to a rock underbelly. Look for Off Center on January 26th.

The Infinites Share The Queen

One of my most anticipated Austin record this year is the forthcoming LP from the Infinites. We’ve already hyped up their super “The Expat” single, and they’re raising the bar on this new one. Musically, the track feels like a ship at sea, rocking back and forth in the crafty groove the band have created. Steadying the ship, however, is Jared Leibowich (an ATHR alum!), with his voice shining its majesty atop as it guides the band’s pop sensibility. There’s several moments when the band locks in here, throwing out a rocking guitar solo just to flex the stellar musicianship on the stage. You’re going to want to grab Archetypes; it drops via Meritorio on February 16th.

Thanks Light Release Wildcatting

The Austin musical year has officially started, with Thanks Light releasing their latest effort, Wildcatting, today. We wanted to point you in their direction, as they’re channeling a blend of country swagger and pop rock that feels right at home in the confines of our city. Opening track “Liberty Hill” is the perfect introduction, particularly when you listen to all the arrangement work; it’s got this pounding piano and guitar hurry that gets you moving right into the swagger of things. But, like the album, this song’s filled with different grooves, moving from that hip-shaking sound to a more thoughtful bit of melody riding on the back of solid piano work. If you’re up and wanting to listen to the record as a whole, you can hear it HERE, and I assume it’ll all run on Bandcamp later when the band gets out of bed!

Fantastic Purple Spots Call the Christmas Ambulance

As the year begins to slowly wind down, there’s still some holiday cheer left in the world, or so I hope Today, we wanted to share with you a tune from Fantastic Purple Spots, who we may be working with in the New Year. This is their tune “Christmas Ambulance,” a meandering bit of psychedelic-tinged pop vibes; it manages to channel the band’s indie roots whilst still holding on to a faint hint of holiday spice. Personally, I love the way that the track builds this heavy fuzz that runs through the verses, building like you’d expect from someone working in Elephant 6 circles. Get your holiday cheer below! And keep your eyes peeled for news about a new EP in 2024!

Fading Yellow Drop New EP

Looking over my shoulder, it seems I missed the debut EP from Austin’s Fading Yellow, which is a quick little listen that would certainly fit into my listening rotation. The music’s got a bit of that rolling psychedelic buzz you would ascribe to a Stereolab fan, but you can hear more modern pop touches lurking in the tracks too, with guitar work that reminds me of early Of Montreal. Below I’ve got the most immediately tasty join on the EP, but, I advise you to dig in as the band push their sound a bit in some of the other spaces. You can stream the whole Stereo Assessment EP by jumping over HERE.

The Infinites Announce New Record

The Infinites have been one of our favorite acts in the Austin scene; the band’s full of ties to our own ATH Records, with members of both Zoltars and the Hermits playing on this record…and we couldn’t be happier to see them all land on one of our favorite labels, Meritorio! Our first single offers listeners a glimpse at the group’s propensity for offering an indie rock groove; you can feel the movement in the way the song goes up and down, constantly moving and growing. Jared’s vocal work is some of his best today, coolly riding that steady movement as the guitar lines seem to dance all around him. If you haven’t listened to the band before, might we suggest also spending some time with their self-titled debut. Archetypes will be out on February 16th via Meritorio Records–Pre-Order it HERE!

Psychic Seatbelt Release Hooky EP

Austin’s Claire Hamilton has a pretty solid pedigree in our town, having played in Queue Queue and Thor/and Friends, among other projects. But, as of now she’s operating her own Psychic Seatbelt moniker, and I’d really love for you to indulge in their brand new Hooky EP. For me, it feels like a stepping stone to future projects, or perhaps Claire’s just eager to let the music out. On tracks like “Double Dare” or “Someone Let the Cat Out” you can hear some sort of old school New York sounds bleeding into the mix; I hear a bit of the Velvet Underground with maybe some later Sonic Youth tendencies tossed in for fun. But, you can go on down and listen to the EP’s title track, with “Hooky” operating as more of a cosmic folk ballad, stripped down to the vocals and guitar. Really excited that you all get to hear this EP, so check it out below!

Redbud Share Kin Video

Redbud has spent some time this year working on creating really stellar videos for their most recent releases; today they’re out to share a new one for “Kin,” which has appeared in various versions on their last two EPs. This track’s all about the joys of friends, as portrayed by the picnicking foursome in the park; the park and the band also playfully engage with nature throughout, which is another underlying theme of the tune. Musically, it’s a light indiepop shuffle, working somewhere between bossanova and ethereal pop; they employ lots of textured vocals too, adding depth to the melodic underbelly. And, if you’re in the Austin area, they’ll be on board to celebrate Howdy Gals Anniversary at Mohawk on December 15th.
