If you’re like me and most of our ATH staff, you spend a lot of time buying records, digging through crates, and hell, even making wantlists to plan out your next purchases. I also am not a huge fan of massive crowds and absorbent prices, so that whole big convention last weekend just isn’t my bag. So if you’re a collector who likes to dig, chat with old friends, and also lives on a collecting budget, come on down to Mohawk on Sunday and shop at our (much more chill) vinyl convention. A whole slew of great, all local vendors will be there selling all varieties of both new and lovingly used records. My newly adorned booth, “Ray Ray’s Records and Music Stuff” will have a large selection of recently acquired LPs and 45s along with my vintage collection of hats, shirts, posters, cards, and music collectibles. Everything is reasonably priced with bulk deals encouraged. Come say hey on your way in or out of ACL and take home some Austin magic.

Dress Warm Share New Single

Austin’s Dress Warm have a familiar sound, which should hopefully endear them to the locals, and you as well. They’re crafting these bedroom guitar pop songs, reminiscent of acts like Good Morning or Hovvdy; they even have some overlapping layers and a solo that remind me of Real Estate. So you’ve got these great little touchstones that can easily let you drift towards the weekend, riding atop the melodic wave they’ve crafted here for you. This is the sort of Friday tune that just makes you feel good, so press play again and again until your mood settles.

Have Another Beauty From Twain

Though Matthew Davidson has only been an Austinite for a short while, we have already welcomed him with open arms and view him as one of the absolute best songwriters in town. Under his recording moniker Twain, we’ve already been treated to a few new singles this year with his new album Noon coming next month via our friends at Keeled Scales. If you weren’t paying attention or weren’t on board with Twain’s tunes yet, this beautiful and intimate number “Walking II” is sure to turn you into a fan. You will find yourself moved and drawn to the emotional pull of this haunting song.

High Heavens Share 100 Bullets Single

Austin’s High Heavens is a band nearly 30 years in the making, but one that is just now coming together; longtime friends Ernest Salaz and Nick Pellicciotto first met in 96 while working on various other musical assignments. But, as of 2017, they’ve been crafting this cinematic darkness, landing somewhere between Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen, like an elegant lounge act built on the backbone of heavy rock n’ roll. The entire five minutes of this tune walk a fine line between lounge pop and brooding mystery, which makes us really excited to hear where their music will go…hoping a follow-up to Springtime Don’t Call is on its way.

Spirit Ghost Release No Future Single

Austin’s Spirit Ghost have been banging around town for nearly a good while now, and with their new single, it seems the perfect way to (hopefully) move into the Fall. The guitars are hanging on the cusp of power pop and surf rock, with the steady thump from the rhythm section offering up the perfect driving vibe. Despite the poppy tendency bubbling up, the song deals with human frustration and running on the proverbial hamster wheel of life, working hard and never really going anywhere. A nice little mixture of gloom and fun, wrapped up into a song that hope has you tapping your toes a bit.

Kay Odyssey Share Tomorrow’s Girl

Austin’s Kay Odyssey have been relatively quiet since their excellent Knockout LP in 2020, and today it looks like the band is gearing up for another stellar release, sharing a fresh single with us. This new tune has a striking elegance to it, with Kristina’s voice majestically soaring over the baroque backdrop carefully crafted by the rest of the group. Subtle piano lines walk us along, with Liz Burrito’s careful drum work and Geannie Friedman holding the rhythm section in place to help build the song towards its delightful apex; it all comes together like a crash between indiepop and Medieval Times…and I mean that as a compliment. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more, but for now, relish this sweet jam.

Stream New EP From Mall Walker

As we get slammed sometimes later in the week with new music and various announcements, we often miss out on some great tunes as we wade through the muck. One of the things I missed out on last Friday was the killer, self-titled EP drop from Austin’s own Mall Walker. Though these gents feel like they may be quick to garnish the “emo revival” label, I see a lot more grit and hardcore tendencies from the band. Sure, the EP has some post-emo inspiration ala Braid or Jawbreaker, but the hints of post-punk and snarling vocals give this a sound truly their own. Definitely not just another “emo revival” band. First Names Drop Coconut Oil

Austin’s First Names are a group we’ve been keeping our eyes on the last few years, and they’ve just dropped this delicious new single that I’m totally digging. There’s this heavy psych wall that sets the mood, but its soon peeled back to reveal the melodic guitar shuffling that rides throughout the verses. Honestly, one of my favorite pieces about this number is the high-pitched vocal work; it reminds me of our friends in Colourmusic, stretching the boundaries of what we deem as perfectly melodic. And just in case you missed those heavy riffs from the opening, they splice them in and out of the song, working with this huge wall of fuzz to balance the whole jam. Dig it.

Obligatory Voxtrot Post: Fifteen Minutes

It’s clear by the sold out shows in Austin that Voxtrot is enjoying their return, or at least I hope there’s enjoyment in it. For the fans, songs like the new “Fifteen Minutes” gives us a glimpse at what the band was up to following their debut LP and pre-hiatus. Personally, I think it’s really interesting to see how they were incorporating a lot of what was going on in Austin at the time; I love the noisy edges with the punctuated vocals from Ramesh (who used a similar song structured on his newest album, Eternal Spring). Hats off to the band finally getting all the credit they were rightly due! This song appears on Cut from the Stone: Rarities and B-Sides, out digitally on July 22nd.

Ram Vela and the Easy Targets Drop New Single

Our friend Ram Vela has been banging out tracks in Austin for longer than we’ve been a site; he fronted Whitman and even joined Midgetmen’s entourage for a minute. But, as of late he’s been brandishing his love of pop rock with Ram Vela and the Easy Targets. The band have a new LP dropping late this year, and we’ve got that first rocking single to bring you this morning. The band waste no time in dropping in this heavy riffage, dropping in huge distorted riffs as Ram emphatically punctuates the tune with the chorus, making sure to leave you with the hooks you desire! If you’re punching the air and screaming along, you’re doing it right. We’ll keep you posted as the record draws near!
