For those just now catching onto the Being Dead train (where ya been folks?), this new single is precisely one of the reasons we hold them in such high esteem. They tease you into their works, nearly 45 seconds of playful strum and vocal harmonizing to welcome you to the fun. Just then, that strum drops in with the perfect drum beat, and the song consumes you with this nostalgic bit of brooding pop; they don’t shy away from their natural inclination to have fun, painting little inside jokes between the masterful bend and break of Falcon Bitch’s performance. And, like many of their pieces, they don’t overindulge, giving you just enough of a taste that you walk away wanting more…and you’ll get more when they drop EELS on September 27th via Bayonet.

Returning with another batch of tunes after last year’s excellent When Horses Would Run, Being Dead still seem to be growing in confidence and promise. This tune kicks off with this driving rhythmic push instantly caffeinating your listen; they work to indulge their whimsical side by interlocking the vocalists, trading hooks back and forth with one another, all of it to the song’s snappy beat. And, just as you think they’re pushing you towards the top of the musical hill, they take a wild left turn and change directions, forcing you to keep pace. This makes their musical craft interesting, but also allows for a lot of that playfulness to carry over into their live sets. EELS will be released on September 27th via Bayonet Records.

If there was a song that encompassed the live energy and personality of Being Dead, think that their latest single is perfect. Imagine watching the band as the song begins with a bit of almost teasing with the audience, like they’re warming up here. Soon, they drop into the song, rolling drums and delivering a powerful chant of “you killed them.” But, like they do in the live setting, they switch into a different gear, letting the hook come at a buffalo’s gallop, building in layered melodies from their vocal work. Then, as if the show’s wrapping up, the song evolves into cacophony; it’s an entire show in one quick 3 minute blast! The group release When Horses Would Run on July 14th via Bayonet.

When listening through the latest single from Beach Fossils you can feel the sense of freedom and joy that Dustin Payseur has alluded to in the press bits for this album cycle. You can still easily slide into the sort of dreamy moments, but there’s this seeming weight lifted from the music, maybe just in the strumming of the guitars. There’s even a sentiment that feels omnipresent in the world the last few years, albeit spun through the perspective of a New Yorker: “living in New York it can grind you down.” Sure, that’s New York, but just the world in general can leave that weight atop your shoulders, so finding a bit of pop like this to kind of let the spirits free is vital to our existence. You’ll find this emotional reprieve on Bunny, which drops June 2nd via Bayonet.

We here at ATH have been championing Austin’s most captivating band for some time; I screamed it so loud I put out a Being Dead 7″, and I hope you heard because the band are ready for breaking out with their new LP. Of all the songs on this album, those that are first being introduced to the band will surely get a feel for the group’s vibe. They fill their sets with classic hooks, vocal duets, breakdowns, improvisation plus more, and you get the entirety of that feel if you listen from start to finish. Ultimately, they’re like the supreme house band for Sour Patch Kids; they’re sweet and sour and incredibly lovable. I promise you when I say you’ll be adding When Horses Would Run to your LP collection; it drops July 14th via the Bayonet.

Beach Fossils Share Dare Me Video

With their first single from Bunny, Beach Fossils seemed to have picked up right where they left off on their last LP. But, now that we’ve got the second single, it appears as if they’r painting with more of a broad pop paint brush. Honestly, (and I mean this in the absolute best way) the song sounds a bit like Beach Fossils went down a deep Photo Album era Death Cab listening trance whilst recording this record. That chorus feels exactly like the early Ben Gibbard days when you just couldn’t get those songs out of your head, only this time it’s done with just a bit more of that angular vibe Beach Fossils bring to their own craft. There’s more warmth here, even in the drum work, so everything feels aligned to this huge pop stance. I’m excited to hear where songs like this fit into Bunny; it drops via Bayonet on June 2nd.

Beach Fossils Return with Don’t Fade Away

While there have been a handful of releases in the interim (jazz album, single, etc), Beach Fossils have been fairly quiet since the release of Somersault in 2017. But, worry no more as the band announce Bunny today, their brand new record for Bayonet. Our first listen has us circling back to the group’s sound, building layer upon layer of synths and swirling guitars; this one had me hooked from those opening lines, and it only gets better as the chorus evolves and you get a little extra guitar focus that adds a beautifully dreamy wash to the song’s middle. Stoked to listen to the whole of Bunny; it drops on June 2nd via Bayonet.

Smut Shares After Silver Leaves

Been a bit of a slower week for me on the music side of things, but as we near the end, I had to share this new single called “After Silver Leaves” from Chicago based outfit Smut. It definitely has some clear 90s rock inspiration, but also with hints of dreamy pop and an overall brightness to it. You’ll find that it progresses incredibly well over the 5 minute length with a slow build and rise near the end. Great tune.

Smut Announce Power Fantasy EP

Smut encapsulate the perfect blend of pop and rock, which should put fans of acts like the Beths or Best Coast on notice. Things open up on the purely pop tilt here, not even hinting that there’s a heavy-hand lurking; it’s all shiny and bubblegum. But, right around the 1:30 mark pedals get pushed and the rock is unleashed. It’s a nice little turn, giving the tune a nice edge that enables the hook to push right on through the speaker. Feels like good old fashioned college rock, so a lot of folks are going to be super excited about Power Fantasy when it drops via Bayonet Records on November 20th.

Kevin Krauter Shares Surprise

It seems like a trend nowadays to flirt with the edges of indiepop. I feel like all these acts are employing these soft guitar edges and sweet harmonies…just like Kevin Krauter. Listening to this new tune, you can even hear the shimmering of guitars combined with the super calm vocal delivery; you make that guitar cutting through scream a bit louder and you might even find this landing in some shoegaze territory. But, at the core, is a great melody, something we can all attach to our ears and hum throughout the day; it’s that natural pop sensibility that we all adore, whether we want to admit it or not. I’m not shying away from my adoration, especially with this jam. His new album Full Hand will be out on February 28th via Bayonet Records.
