Show Pics: Austra@ The Mohawk (2/3)

Here comes a little bonus coverage. I was able to sneak next door to The Mohawk during the Tres Oui record release and grab shots of our friends Night Drive and the headliner Austra.

Pleasantly packed house, meaning while it was almost sold out feel, you could still get through the crowd, if necessary. Fans were there and up front early, ready to lose their minds to their favorite song. That favorite song varied. Some were in love with the recently released record, others held their excitement for the jams from the early buzziest buzzworthy material.

Show Pics: Tres Oui Release Party

Another week, another record released by Austin Town Hall Records.

The most recent excuse to get together with friends is the EP from Tres Oui. Singles Going Nowhere is five tracks perfectly crafted pop chock full of ringing guitar and driving backlines. It is a compact example of the concise EP as opposed to five goods songs with filler content. Oh, sure, they have new songs already, so be ready for that when you see them in your neighborhood. Did I mention this was a tour kickoff, too?

Hit the road, nerds.

Show Pics: Pollen RX Release Party

Hi. Photo tech, here.

Sunbelt Emptiness is a triumph. How is that for a quotable?

Having torn up a couple of pizzas at King Bee (you must go, Billy and Collette rule), +1 and I made our way to see all the friends over at Cheer Up for the Pollen RX release party. High on my list was checking out The Infinites plus a little quality time with Kay Odyssey. I hit the wall a little after Pollen RX’s nearly perfect set; we could have used a little more vocal in the mix from Maud. #Gremlins I should have stuck around for Deep Time and Popper Burns from field reports.

Show Pics: Midge Ure @ 3ten (1/20)

As I mentioned in the preview, Midge Ure was last in town, almost exactly two years ago. Oh, those were much simpler times, weren’t they? Though not in name, the idea of the current climate was a subject of between song banter and related to several titles, even if just loosely. Fitting given the protest that night, call it a warmup for the women’s march. There were many songs that he could not do justice in the acoustic only set from The Cactus, in particular hearing “Reap the Wild Wind” was bucket list stuff for me.

Nite‘s set was a very pleasant surprise.

Some Free Week Pics…

I do love Free Week. The day job keeps me from going every night, but ANY night of Free Week means seeing tons of friends on stage and off. This edition of Free Week photos features photos of Light Wheel, Big Bill, Night Drive, Rose Selavy, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, a tiny cupcake fail, ladder climbing, toasts, staples and so much more. Venues visited were The Mohawk, Cheer Up and Barracuda.

I’m going to post a few thoughts on the backside of the break. The short story is that Big Bill can’t lose, Night Drive is still my favorite dance party, Rose Selavy is rad as a three-piece, Letting Up can do the same and Barracuda was surprisingly packed.

TIP YOUR BARTENDERS. BUY MERCH.

Goodbye 2016

day-for-night-sun-371We’ve been recovering over the holidays as it has been a strange year to say the least with more rain outs, a storm of discontent and quite a bit of loss.

The fall festival season was one of the strongest in a while with newcomers Sound on Sound anchoring the weird; the best things are often not easy. ACL had one of its best headliner lineups in years. #RadioheadplayedLetDown I have a reason to go to Houston in Day For Night. Austin Town Hall Records had several releases hit the store, great stuff. I hung out with a lot of people I love. We had a lot of great records to listen to.

Maybe 2016 wasn’t all that bad, but I’m cool with saying the final goodnight. I’ll leave you with some really random photos.

Day For Night: Sunday In Photos

day-for-night-sun-282Second big gallery, this one is nuts cause we had a full day of festing planned out.

First of all, you can’t plan the weather, but you can plan for it. It was frrrreaky cold. I was sporting my fluffy socks, gloves, the wind proof jacket and the X-Men scarf (thanks, Beth). The suffering was worth it as once again, the fest proved to be a fantastic place to have a camera.

The Sunday gallery from Day for Night features Nothing, S U R V I V E, Ariel Pink, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, Matmos, Lightning Bolts, Liars, Night Drive, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Little Dragon and Butthole Surfers. Wow.

Day For Night: Saturday In Photos

day-for-night-sat-201Nathan has our summary post duties. Nailed it.

Day for Night is a very ambitious festival; it over-reached a couple times this year, but all in all, it was a success. We’ll be giving the organizers some real talk feedback, but hot damn, last weekend was photogenic AF. The giant LED backgrounds used either for artists synchronized art or for excellent festival graphic design or complimentary colors to appease the lighting directors whims, all with a Houston skyline looming.

Aside from tons of environment pics, Saturday’s gallery features Lower Dens, Jesus and Mary Chain, Blood Orange, Tycho and Aphex Twin. I mean, look at that list. And this was the easy and chill day.

Sound on Sound Recap – Friday

sos-friday-036Mama, we made it! This past weekend, we loaded up our best jousting gear and chain mail armor and made the jaunt out to Sherwood Forest in McDade for the first ever Sound on Sound Festival. With the excellent lineup, new approach to booking a location and trusted leaders at the helm, we knew we were in for a whole different festival experience, but what we got was something that went beyond expectations. We came, we saw, we conquered, and some of us felt as though we’d never be dry again (damn rain!). It was a spectacular weekend filled with merriment and music– read on for ATH’s thoughts on day one and to relive Friday with B.Gray’s pretty pics.
