Show Pics: Blackbird Blackbird @ Johnny Brenda’s (7/1)

Blackbird BlackbirdAnother business trip meant finding another foreign place to catch a show. After Denver had zero on the schedule, Philly delivered with a nice little offering at a venue called Johnny Brenda’s. We had locals called The Interest Group opening for Beat Culture who was touring with Blackbird Blackbird. I ventured out after the crushing defeat of the fighting Tim Howards to the Fishtown Hood and got my shwerve on with some samples and beats.

Show Review: Cut Copy @ Stubb’s (6/21)

Cut CopySometimes you have to pay the toll. The heat was taking the toll. Stubb’s is probably just a little too small to host Cut Copy these days. The band is stuck in popularity in the gap that Austin can’t quite handle and I doubt Cedar Park Center would be a popular destination for an indie-pop electro Aussie dance party.

Damn. It was hot. We sweat, we dance, we sweat more. We wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Show Pics: ATH and Side One Track One Presents @ Holy Mountain (6.20)

She SirWhat a fantastic night of local (and nearly local) talent.

She Sir opened and are getting tighter and tighter. The material from their latest effort was the perfect start to the night, engaging or the background music for patio time, you get to choose.

Young Girls played new stuff, the entire EP and a few of the hits that made us fall for them. Now a lean three piece and bolstered by Nicholas powering away on drums, Pete and Charlie split front man duties. I am biased, but I loved their set the mostest.

Ramesh is the latest in the ATH Records stable, test-pressing in Nathan’s mitts. Two members of the brand new backing band are friends from Shivery Shakes; they had about a day to learn the material. If the material can be this good live as a new ensemble, I cannot wait for them to get more time together. This record could be one of the best of the year.

Abram Shook had the backing vocalists on stage this time around and as he put it, the songs just get sexier. We love this record, go see him ASAP.

PICS A PLENTY AFTER THE BREAK!!!

Show Pics: Orthy @ The Living Room (5/25)

OrthyA little end the work week viewing…

When it came time to figure out what to do the night before the Holiday last Monday, we figured something relaxing, maybe a little fancy, friends, etc. How about Orthy and Royal Forest playing the W’s Living Room Live series? Drink specials? Sure. Couches, awesome! We even made dinner reservations before hand. I wore shorts that weren’t cut down from longer origins.

Our friend asked if my little camera that joined us was one of the black & white specialty types, which keyed me to shoot the night in monochrome. Why not? I was “on vacation”

Austin Psych Fest 2014 In Pictures

Psych 14 BannerAPF7 has come and gone. Charlie Megira is my new favorite thing. Temples surprised me (ignore their flowery songs and cut to the big stuff). Think No Think were my favorite locals. The Horrors were dark, but sounded great even from the photo pit. The Fresh & Onlys are our new favorite people in rock and/or roll.

I thought I would try something new as we work out the rest of the bugs in the site after an unplanned server move (that sucked) by embedding a slideshow of the giant gallery from my photo site. Feedback welcome.

Show Review: The National @ ACL Live (4/22)

The National

After last year’s RainCL debacle, many fans of these gentlemen from Brooklyn were disappointed to miss out on their set, which was scheduled for a brief slot on Sunday. To counter this missed show, The National came back in full force, booking two sold out nights and a third added in the aftermath of popular demand. Riding high off of their sixth full-length album, which has steepened their rise of popularity initiated by High Violet to a new level. They brought along the ladies of LA’s Warpaint to open, and the crowd was amped up to hear their new favorites off of 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me.

Show Review: Four Tet @ The Mohawk (3/1)

Kieran HebdenKieran Hebden is a collector. A hunter-gather of sorts. With fine antiquities or rare stamps, the value of a collection is often determined by the finicky demand of the market. Hebden’s assemblage is a more specialized and unquantifiable archive; at least to the lay-person. Known lovingly as Four-Tet, the London-based producer collects music, or more specifically, samples. Little snippets of carefully curated melody or rythym. Like any artist, the real magic happens in the process and with an ever-growing presence in the electronic world, Four-Tet has managed to become a house-hold name with his ability to build stunning tracks from basically nothing but his snippits.

On Saturday night, he returned to the Capitol city with a new set of offerings on display. The market was indeed ripe.

Show Pics: Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr @ Emos’ (2/22)

Dale Earnhardt Jr JrI have a confession to make. I asked to go to this show to shoot Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. I was really more excited to see Chad Valley. That said, I ended up being quite impressed with the Dale Jr. Jr. on the eve of their big Daytona 500 win. How did they get there in time? Jr.

There was a rabid crowd that showed up early to reserve a spot to dance in the more personal small venue version of Emo’s, thankfully now divided by a proper curtain bisecting the room at the soundboard to tighten up the sound a bit versus the camouflage net previously used.
