Most Likely New To You: Protomartyr Reissues Debut LP

Everyone’s favorite post punk doom-rock band, Protomartyr, just announced that they’ll be reissuing their debut LP,No Passion All Technique, which has long been out of print and not available on streaming services. Such an uncommon phenomenon will be erased for fans on May 3rd, when Domino reissues the album and the band releases an extended digital version. They’ve dropped single “Jumbo’s,” from that first release, with its official video, which gives you a bit of a slice of what it’s like to watch the band live. While “Jumbo’s” feels definitely less polished than any cut off ofRelatives in Descent, the band’s most recent full-length, but that’s the kind of demo-esque gold I imagine we’ll be getting with the rest of this reissue. Pre-order it here.

Brand New Protomartyr

Everyone’s favorite band Protomartyr has teamed up with Kelley Deal to record a brand new EP. What’s most impressive is that Kelley’s entered the vocal fray with Joe Casey, offering up a soft supporting vocal behind Joe’s darkened howl. I think of their latest works, this might be the strongest piece; I love how the song opens up in the middle, allowing musicianship to flex its muscles. Of course, that mid track solace is destroyed by a few more Casey/Deal vocal bursts, before descending into a smashing golf ball drive! Look for the Consolation EP to drop on June 15th via Domino!

Bright Jam from The New Tigers

I’m always going to write about The New Tigers; the band have been pretty brilliant with their releases up to now. And with the announcement of Do Xao, it seems like the group’s star is ascending. Synth stabs set the immediate tone here, setting the tone for the way the vocals rise and fall in pure pop fashion. It’s like every syllable lands perfectly on a precise melody that makes them as infectious as anything you’ll hear this week. Combine the above with the almost dreamy slink of the track, and you’ve got your favorite tune of the day ready for repeated listens. The new LP will be out on April 20th via Soliti.

Brand New Spinning Coin Jam

Last year during SXSW, a good friend from across the pond threw a wonderful party of Glaswegian acts; it was there that I first fell in love with what Spinning Coin were doing. We’re inching closer towards the release of the band’s debut, and as such, we’ve got an incredible tune for you. I think there’s a great nod to the sort of soft post punk that permeated indie record stores in the 1980s. There’s hooks, but they’re not overbearing. You’ll hear male/female vocals, though not kitsch. You just don’t hear tunes like this, sadly, as I could use a whole lot more; I’ll get it on November 10th when Permo drops via Domino.

Protomartyr Sign to Domino for New LP

I don’t think there’s a single person that dislikes Protomartyr, and I think this new single is going to continue that run. They’ve announced they’re signing to Domino to release Relatives in Descent, and this video/track is filled with these miniature movements that are sure to captivate. At first, the band sounds like a more brooding National, almost more sinister, then a slight pop interlude with strumming guitar and a blast into the chorus…they go back, but then comes the next movement with the mellow release of the repeated lines “she’s just trying to reach you.” They emphatically bang to a close, go soft, then bang back out only to quietly fade away with a light string. Look for the new album on September 29th.

Lionlimb Release New Single

lionFor some reason, I can’t help but think of Eliott Smith when listening to this new track from Lionlimb. Sure, a lot of it comes directly from the vocal inflections, but I can also hear it in the way the songs are constructed. It all harkens back to a purer era in pop songwriting, which you know always has my ears perked up. The band release their debut Shoo on March 4th via Bayonet, and with all the promise of this early single it should definitely be something we’ll all be noticing in the very near future.
