Mary Ocher Releases New Single

Sometimes you encounter a song, and despite where your brain might be, you can’t escape the magnetism before you; this is where I meet German artist Mary Ocher. Her latest single, and album, focuses on a minimalist approach, using a dominating bit of piano and her voice, tugging at your emotions with elegant arrangements that sweep across the left and right speakers. When this tune opens it does so in bounding fashion, and Ocher almost feels joyous and playful, hopping on the back of each deliciously sharp note. It’s a striking song that I just can’t escape, and it’s magic is waiting for you to press play. Look for Weimar on March 13th.

Lola Share Moon Song Single

When you stumble upon great songs, they can sometimes take you aback, like this new tune from Germany’s Lola. I honestly thought that the song was going to spin into some modern post-punk, delivering a huge bounce that erupted into some euphoric moment; I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was totally okay with that happening. But, the group instead, add a little more rhythmic texture, then lock into the tension, building it block by block as the song moves forward with faint little sprinkles hinting at the endless possibilities that could unfold. It’s the perfect tease, and I can’t wait to hear more from this group.

Rosa Anschutz Share Sun Tavern

When I first encountered this new tune from Rosa Anschutz, the experienced feel of her craft made me wonder why I hadn’t heard from her prior to this new single, and then I learned she’s been working in the electronic underground in Germany for years. My fascination revolves around the evolution of the track, building on this sort of cavernous industrial feel with a powerful vocal dominating the front of the mix; the voice dances and dashes to match up with some of the parallel textures at play in the guitars. Then, as you adjust your listening to the electronic nature, it instantly begins to twist into this bold soaring indie rock croon, pushing into this realm that seems to have few peers. Such a fascinating listen you should try on for size; look for her first foray outside the German scene with Sabbatical, out September 24th via Heartworm Press.

The Radio Field Are Back!

It’s been a few years since German outfit The Radio Field have popped up with something new, and as they return, they’re coming out swinging. They waste little time with those jangling and twisting guitar notes entering almost immediately; the steadiness of the rhythm section allows them to twist and turn perfectly while the vocals offer a bit of the sublime. I think there’s a nice little touch too in the song’s latter stage when the whole team starts to put in their vocals, though they’re staggered so it comes across like an indiepop call and response. Hope this means there’s more on the way!

Roller Derby Share Video for Lights Out

One of my favorite pop acts of the last few years is German outfit, Roller Derby, who’ve recently released their album When the Night Comes Out. As a whole, the record features some line-up changes, though Philine’s voice is definitely still the driving force behind the group’s magic. This single below, for instance, has a bit of a darker brood, matching up for Philine’s natural delivery, as it’s always had a heavier resonance. I also appreciate the reserved feel, where they allow themselves to sink into the emotion rather than pulling out the same old pop tricks. Don’t get me wrong, I love the tricks, but I love to hear folks mixing it up. When the Night Comes Out is available to stream now!

Brideshead Return with You Are the Light

For a band with 30 years under their belt, it seems like Brideshead are just peaking. It’s been nearly ten years since their last proper release, but this new single illustrates their ability to work into the confines of both classic indiepop and more modern mixtures of the indie sort. After a little snap of the drum sticks, the track immediately cascades into this brilliant bit of heavy jangling, letting the coolness of the vocals push through the speakers. Where they could just rinse and repeat, the group choose to take on some of the dreamier elements of their peers, incorporating it into their more spritely nature, which gives a buzzing hum beneath the track’s mixture; it’s the perfect pop concoction, and you won’t be able to stop playing this song (or so we all hope!). They release You Are the Light via Shelflife on May 23rd.

The Simple Present

German label KUS has been putting out a ridiculous amount of glorious pop music over the last few years, and it looks like they’ve doubled down by picking up The Simple Present. The group is so new, this is their very first recording (that we know of), and man, its simply magnificent. Guitar notes are sharp and dancing around your ears, and while I hear where they could easily take off to the stereotypical pop jaunt, they hold back with a touch of restraint, letting the song sort of weave in and out of your consciousness, though I’ll admit that it’s stuck inside my mind. Definitely for fans of acts from the Sarah roster, or more recently, the Jeanines. An absolute stunner.

Lawn Chair Return with Fancy New Single

You’re going to want to crank this one up, as German posse Lawn Chair are delivering a hook-laden rocker. In no time, you’re thrust in into a a circle pit, spinning you about before the band pull back to let the sharpness of the vocals take over. Claudia’s delivery is definitely a winner here, clever and pointe, riding on the rhythmic pulse that’s luring beneath the surface of the song. There’s a bit of melody when they move into the chorus, but the group still keeps things on a knife’s edge, so if you’re not punch dancing in your room right now, please consult a doctor. Hopefully we hear more from the group real quick, as I just can’t get enough.

Pretty Lightning Return with Glade Runner

We’re getting down to the end of the year folks and it seems like most sites are focused on top songs, lists and year end wrap ups. While we may or may not get there at some point, we’ve still got new tunes coming in for top 2024 contention just before the year end break. My old German pals from Pretty Lightning just shared new track “Glade Runner” and it’s definitely trying to sneak it’s way into my year end list. It features that downright nasty version of psych laden blues I’ve grown to love about the band’s sound over the years. Dig it.

Pretty Lightning will release this track as part of a new album entitled Night Wobble which is due out February 21st.

World Brain Offer Ville Fleurie

German outfit World Brain recently caught my attention with their “Minute Papillon” single, but now there’s another urban pop tune to captivate you early this morning. Put yourself in the mindset of a traveler or urbanite walking through the city, images and buildings flash by, like the soft beats that provide you with the tempo for your walk. But, you turn a corner and your face lights up, just as you see a grand field or park, offering up a cheerful vision that matches the twist in the track. Those of you willing to indulge in some jazz-inflected pop, well, you’re not going to find too many folks doing it better. Open Source will be out on November 1st.
