ATX Spotlight/Show Preview: Chicon (02.19)

chiconI’m always down for more shoegazey/dream pop to love, but even more so down for shoegazey/dream pop that comes from our sweet sweet city. So I’m quite pleased to introduce you to some locals to love, Chicon, a four piece who’ve been putting out music since the summer of 2013, according to their Bandcamp page. Their sound is a mix of wistful noise pop and jangly rock, with dueling male and female vocals from Jeremy Diaz and Lila Paillon. The song I’ve got for you below is from their sophomore record, Sin Ti, which came out last summer digitally, but is being released physically this Thursday(02.19) at Hole In the Wall (doors @9:00pm). “Crush” gives you just a little taste of what this band has to offer you, so listen to the rest of Sin Ti here and head out this Thursday to throw some love towards these folks.

Not too long ago, we shared some info about Austin band La Snacks and their upcoming new 7″ vinyl single.  Well the boys have reached the physical release date of their new material and plan to celebrate with a show at Hole in the Wall on Thursday night.  The lineup continues to build with solid locals Zoltars, The Gary, and The Calm Blue Sea.  I can’t imagine a better lineup of up and coming Austin bands.  Oh and the whole thing is a measly $3 so  you better be there.

Jonathan Richman in Austin!

Who doesn’t love a headless photo crop?  Well, aside from that, Austin is being blessed this week by a semi-residency of the great Jonathan Richman.  He’s one of the greatest American songwriters all time, who got his start with the band The Modern Lovers.  Still going strong, Jonathan just released his latest solo album O Moon, and it’s been quietly enjoyed around my house.  Jonathan will be playing a show at Hole in the Wall tonight, as well as a few more gigs at The Continental Club.  This is your chance to watch one of the great icon of American music do his thing, so be sure to get out to at least one of these gigs, if not all of them.

ATH Interviews: Black Joe Lewis

blackjoelewis_featureShortly after our time at ACL, we realized that we failed to interview any of our favorite local acts playing over the weekend.  To make up for our miscue, we caught up with up and coming Austin artist Black Joe Lewis via email.  Black Joe has been hard working hard and touring the country with his band The Honeybears after releasing his debut LP earlier this year.  Follow the jump to read full interview.

FT5: Best Austin Music Venues

0814top5coverWe spent a lot of time this week debating our favorite venue.  What constitutes the perfect place to catch a show?  Is it sound alone, or beer prices?  Maybe it’s both.  We decided that we wanted to narrow it down to the best five places in town where you’ll most likely see one of us, or one of our favorite bands playing.  We even developed a rating system for them.  We’ll be using our typical 5 Star system (1 being the lowest, 5 the highest) to rate the following areas: Sound Quality, Band Quality, Beer Prices, Atmosphere, and Mobility during packed shows. Follow the jump for full article.
