Levitation Interviews: Pissed Jeans

Wow, hard to believe that we are already about to roll into November and it is once again time for Levitation Festival in Austin. Now this crew stands with the opinion that this is the best fest in town as we love the peeps who put it on, dig the venues, and generally vibe with the bands on the bill. This year is no different as our hype builds and things look to set off in downtown next week. We would of course fail at life if we didn’t try to prep you in some way so a few Levitation “Getting to Know You” interviews seems like a fitting kick off. Also more fitting, is getting to jumpstart this thing with one of my top bands of the entire weekend – Pissed Jeans. Hit the jump for band insights, tunes and set times.

Levitation Reviews: Japanese Breakfast @ Stubbs (10/31)

Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner can’t be stopped. Along with crafting JapaneseBreakfast’s brilliant third album Jubilee, she has somehow found time to score a video game and publish a memoir that became a New York Times Bestseller. So it was no surprise to hear that a morning bus fire was not enough to stop her from getting to Stubbs in time to send Levitation Fest off in style on Halloween. Hit the jump for more thoughts and photos.

Levitation Reviews: Boy Harsher @ Empire (10/28)

I like guitars.

Because of the introduction of technology, synthesizers, and electronic music, the 80s became the decade of exploration in music less organic. A paradigm shift happened on a grand scale in the art of music sometimes for the better, and at times for the worst. The better of that shift has quietly existed, bubbling beneath the surface while electronic music has permeated the industry on a global scale, diehard fans of the true pioneers, at the time considered underground, find themselves embedded in a resurgence of sorts. Whether intentional or not, the three artists on the bill for the first full night of Levitation Fest 21 at Empire Control Room, embody the essence and pay homage to some of the key players in that pivotal movement of music that ushered in a global shift from our analog lives into the digital world. Hit the jump for more and fancy photos.

Levitation 2021 Announces Phase 1 Line Up (Oct. 28 -31)

Yes! The return of one of my favorite festivals/events in Austin. Long ago, Levitation was once Psych Fest, and it was glorious. Then it switched from Psych Fest to Levitation, then switching from one giant beautiful field to multiple venues, and honestly its been like the best part of SXSW! It’s the part where you get music heads chasing great bands like this year’s line-up featuring Black Midi, Chicano Batman, Tinariwen, The Hives, Japanese Breakfast and more! But, at least the 2019 version, it was pretty absent the free-swag army chasing beers and keychains. This year, the event will be spread out over four days, across venues like Stubbs, Mohawk, Cheer Up Charlies and Empire.

You can grab yourself some tickets right HERE, with more bands to be announced as the date draws near. And then check the recap of the 2019 experience!

Levitation Artist Death Valley Girls Drop New Video

Just a bit ago, Death Valley Girls dropped their excellent new LP, Darkness Rains, and while they just got back from a stint with the Distillers, they’re making their way across the States again with Crocodiles, stopping in Austin for Levitation Festival. The video fits today perfectly, splicing live footage of the band with horror flicks. But, more importantly, you’ll find the charm of the band in this particular tune. It’s heavy and playfully spooky, but being me, I always gravitate towards the really bright pop moments in their songs, like the semi-angelic seance of a chorus on this one. Just trying to spotlight all the great acts coming to Austin next week, but if you’re not here, check out their LP, available now via Suicide Squeeze Records.
