Hot Face Announce Automated Response

For all my twee tendencies and adoration of pop rock, I’m still a sucker when a band just gets down and dirty and belts out a rocker, much like London outfit Hot Face. They open their album announcement with this blood-curdling horror-punk howl, with the guitars rollicking in this devil-may-care fashion. There’s a cool breakdown just after the one minute mark with some vocal syllabic yips that totally got me in my punk rock feels. Definitely happy to get turned on to some solid morning rock n’ roll. Look for their debut album Automated Response to drop in January of next year via Speedy Wunderground.

New Music from Happy Dust Gang

Monday is obviously all about vibes, as the kids say, so I thought I would open up today’s listening excursion with this super rad explorative pop tune from Happy Dust Gang. They’re operating in this world of modern pop construction, but the fashion with which they do it sounds an awful lot like Radio Dept, overlapping melodic textures that just tickle your inner ear. The lightness of the vocals creeps carefully into your soul, and although they feel more spoken than sung, you can’t help but be pulled deep within the depths of what’s at play. Closer listens reveal all these unique little nuanced touches beneath the surface, and I implore you to just let the world around you fade as this song lifts your spirits.

Flypaper Back With A Gem

Rory Sear’s new solo project under the moniker flypaper came onto our radar in the spring of last year with the release of his debut EP Other Orbit. Well now Sear is back again this year with his much anticipated debut full length called Forget the Rush, which of course comes with new tunes to enjoy. This new joint “Oh Well,” is what I would call a true gem in the indie folk or indie songwriter genre. It shows this tuned in knack for crafting songs with personal lyrics and expertly timed hints of pop undertones. Lovely.

The Golden Toad Share Time

While I’m a little worried about the Golden Toad‘s focus on the concept of “time,” I do know that their brand of post-punk psychedelia is super up my alley. You’ll click play here and be immediately embraced by this bobbing pulse, which is quickly greeted by these hollowed vocal howls and discordant notes shimmering through the distant horizon. Closer ears will even here this little element that has this almost folk resonance to it, sort of reverberating as the noise and the song begin to swell together. They’re a fairly new act on the London scene, but my feelings here are that the tune’s definitely something worthy of circling back to, over and over.

Join Announces Debut LP for Keeled Scales

Our good buddy Tony over at Keeled Scales has a great ear for bringing new voices to the masses, and that’s what I’m expecting from Joni when her Things I Left Behind album is released this Spring. Today, you get the title track of said album, and there’s some balancing of tonal notes that make the sound subtly striking. A snappy percussive element is working beneath the entire time, so you get some natural movement propelling the pace. But, more importantly is the way the guitar embraces a heavy vibe, and by that, I mean just the weight of the notes (it’s not metal, folks!). This contrasts perfectly with the way vocals come across like little intimate whispers shared partners. Look for Things I Left Behind on April 11th; it’s being released by Hand in Hive in the UK.

Please to Meet You: Roi Turbo

Why the music scene dries up due to mandatory list making, there’s still some fresh new acts to get turned onto, like London duo Roi Turbo; the duo grew up in South Africa, so after they’re relocation you can still hear the remnants of their home country in their craft. They’re drawing from the rich culture of South African disco and funk, which admittedly I know zero about, so this feels both new, and yet connected to the dance floors across the globe. It’s kind of a retro feel, but they’ve vowed to approach their music in a manner that is just “free of any pretentiousness,” and I can certainly appreciate that. Something fun to keep on your radar for next year!

Sassyhiya Announce Take You Somewhere

Fresh off of the catchiness of “Kristen Stewart,” London’s Sassyhiya return with the announcement of their brand new LP, Take You Somewhere. They jump right back into the joy of life with another infectious number, teasing you with noise before bouncing into the upbeat jangling that sets up the vocal work. Those vocal notes seem to ride on the crests of the rhythm section, going up and down as the track pitches back and forth, though the second foray into the verse seems a bit softer tonally. You should definitely have Take You Somewhere on your radar, as it drops on November 8th via Skep Wax.

Black Doldrums Deliver Another Hit

London based Black Doldrums came onto my musical radar last month with the fuzzed out, post punk single “Hideaway.” As many know, once a band gets on my radar, I tend to save all new singles and albums as they come in. Such is the case with this new single “Summer Breeze,” which offers a hint of brightness underneath the sort of dark wave sound I originally vibed with. You’ll find lots to like here.

Black Doldrums Drop Hideaway

Dang if London based label Fuzz club hasn’t been dropping some serious heat recently as purveyors and curators of modern, fuzzy psych rock. Continuing with the string of modern gems in the label’s catalogue is this dark wave psych number called “Hideaway” from fellow London risers Black Doldrums. I am personally loving the play here on what some might consider a fuzzed up, psych sound with a gnarly, darker, post-punk type vibe. For me, it creates something all together unique and fresh in the genre.

Sassyhiya Share Kristen Stewart Single

Even though we’re drawing near the end of the Summer, or maybe that’s wishful thinking, we’ve still got room for this Summer Jam from Sassyhiya. Seriously, if the infectious delivery and stuttering dance from the percussion aren’t enough to get you grooving, then maybe you’ll have to turn to the chorus. They open the tune up there, offering a nice melodic glide with some classic cymbal work filling in the background space. Personally, the employment of multiple layers of vocals throughout the tune is a nice little 1-2 punch for me, laying me out on the floor so I can play the track on repeat. This song will appear on a limited 7″ via Skep Wax, and we can only hope there’s more exciting pop of this sort coming our way.
