ATH Records to Work with The Ocean Party

oceanpartyUp until now, I’ve stuck mostly close to home for releasing records via ATH Records, and I’ve been really proud of that.  But, every once in a while, you have to step outside your comfort box and do something big.  So, I’ve decided to work with Spunk Records and the Aussie outfit, The Ocean Party.  They’ve already got a couple of great releases to their name, which we’ve covered on our site, so I’m really happy to be part of this new effort, Light Weight. The album will be out in October, but for now, you can grab a download of their excellent first single below.

Tam Vantage Now T.V.; Announces Debut Album

11402594_863094203762613_3487640641002569411_oI’ve hit you with several of the tunes of Tam Vantage, one of the former members of Pop Singles.  It looks like Tam’s rounded out the perfect line-up for his songs, and gone in to record the tracks for his forthcoming LP, Life in High Definition…doing it now as T.V.  The band’s latest single, “Do You Remember,” seems to hold true to the sounds of other Melbourne acts like Dick Diver or Twerps, but the recording (and the band for that matter) seem to have grander orchestration in mind.  They’ve added some solid piano backbone to the track, lifting it just a hint above Aussie guitar pop.  Look for this highly anticipated effort come September.

Teaser Pony Offer New 7″

teaserFelt like it’s been a wee bit since I checked in on the goings-on in Australia, so I was really pleased to come across this new EP from Melbourne’s Teaser Pony. It’s got this casual pop attitude, sometimes energetic, while other times completely relaxed.  Their debut EP has a lot of promise going forward, leaving room for the band to move in multiple directions; “Champion Fullback” has a power-pop feel, while “I.D.K.E.W.Y.S.F.N.” has a Spoon-ish stomp to them. You can grab your own copy from Cinnamon Records in the first few weeks of June.

Electro-Folk From Lanks

10665674_668666903224733_3363586482483786576_nSometimes I like to mix it up a bit and go down a slightly different path musically, and boy, has Lanks satisfied that desire with “Hold Me Closer.” Lanks is the project of Melbourne artist Wil Cuming, and it focuses on turning your folk expectations on its head with electronic elements that will have you wondering if it acceptable to dance to this song, wherever it may be finding you. “Hold Me Closer” is a perfect example of this type of groove, with its constant beat that kicks things off, a brief blip of folksy sounding music, and then the eminent addition of more and more electronic elements, while keeping that twangy guitar. Sure, it’s a weird phenomenon, but one I’m digging. What do you think?

Heart Beach

tumblr_njjyzkZXey1tq4r3mo1_500I just heard about Australian based indie band Heart Beach today and I’m already stricken with their music.  This song, “Away”, is what started it all for me and I’m hoping you feel the same way when you hit play.  It’s a song that is seemingly always waiting for the beat to drop, it never really does, and I find myself loving every second of that.  Loving the guitar sounds created here too.  Check out more of their tuneage over on bandcamp.

Check Out Great Outdoors

greatThis new song from Great Outdoors just popped up yesterday, and I’m going to spend the next few weeks fawning over it.  There’s such a careful touch to everything the band does in this track, from the pacing to the guitar chords to the tribal percussive elements that open the tune.  You’ll find this song as one of the featured tunes on the band’s new album, Dads Oasis, which was just wrapped up in their native Australia. If you’ve got good things going on in life, they’re only going to get better with this 4.5 minute gem of a pop song.

Folksy Finesse From Packwood

Australi10911457_826203390751247_4054243619094900500_oa just must be the place to be these days, as a lot of up-and-coming artists seem to be coming from down under, including Packwood, the project of Bayden Packwood Hine based out of Melbourne. The song is a blend of folk elements such as the simplicity of a man with his acoustic guitar, but then builds and grows with the addition of tinkling piano and other group vocals. This reminds me vaguely of something that the indie folk god Sufjan Stevens would be behind, and with each listen I find something else to focus on. This track is apart of a project from this artist called Vertumnus, which is a seasonal release of the tracks of an EP individually that you can read more about and preorder here

Enjoy Some Crepes…the band

creepsThis song from Crepes is something really special for you on a Tuesday. If it helps grab your attention, Mikey Young of Total Control and Eddy Current Suppression Ring handled the mastering on the band’s new work…and you know that guy’s no slouch.  But, similar Melbourne acts, there’s a different side of pop coming from these guys, offering a slowly unfolding picture that brings a bright bouncing harmony to the chorus.  Right now they’re just starting to catch on, but things will really take off when their debut EP is released in early 2015…says I.

Touch of Pop from Tam Vantage

tomThose of you in the know of the Aussie pop scene might be aware of Tam Vantage; he’s previously worked in Pop Singles and ATH darlings The Stevens.  But, he’s got a new project working under his namesake, and it’s delectable pop bliss for pretty much every listener.  I like the slight bit of inflection that’s in his voice, fitting perfectly into the light-hearted approach to his guitar work.  I swear, there’s something going on in that Melbourne water; I’m in love with everything that city produces. For now, there’s just this grand single, but I’ll keep you on the up and up with more announcements as they come our way.

Pronto

prontoPronto is a Melbourne based band who just dropped a new album this month full of powerful punk tunes laden with some pop tendencies.  To get a taste of the band’s music, check out this sweet new single called “Red Flag”.  As soon as you hit play, you’ll know what’s in store for you hear so I will save my words.  Kick ass.
