Ticket Giveaway: Kishi Bashi @ Mohawk (5.9)

KBashi1Personally, this is the steal of the week.  Kishi Bashi is renown for his incredible performances, not to mention the moving music he’s created, so why not take a chance to grab yourself a pair of free tickets from us and our friends at Transmission.  Kishi is known for looping his voice, his violin and beats, a la Andrew Bird, but I have a feeling that he’ll bring a friend or two to the stage.  If you’ve been hiding in a hole, then I suggest you go back and listen to 151a, or steam his up-coming release, Lighght, over at NPR. This is guaranteed to be one of those shows your friends will talk about for years, so be sure to show up.  And get there early to catch Plume Giant. You can assure yourself tickets HERE, or you can leave a comment with Your Favorite Local Eatery; I’ll pick the winner who I agree with the most (I’m in fat kid mode today, FYI).

Contest closes at 12 PM CST on Thursday, May 8th.

Show Review: Future Islands @ Mohawk (4.23)

Upload Future Islands 20140423222153In a week filled with shows, it was perhaps one of the more anticipated sets of the week, especially with Future Islands seemingly springing to larger popularity via their performance on some late night talk show.  I was a little bummed that people didn’t quite make it out early enough to catch the openers, Knifight, but perhaps that will help keep them our little secret for just a bit longer.

Thanks to Bryan at PPI for sharing some photos with us.

Austin Psych Fest Interview 2014: Elephant Stone

elephantOne of the great things about Psych Fest, like many of our festivals in town, is that they realize that not every band can play, nor can every fan afford the shows.  So, they put in some work and lined up some opening shows on the Thursday before the official festival begins.  One of those acts I’ve been following for years: Elephant Stone.  They’re one of the many great acts playing over at Mohawk (there’s other shows at Red 7 too!); they’ll be playing at 9:00 PM outdoors. We caught up with Rishi Dhir for a quick interview before they make their way into town.  Read more

Show Review: Odonis Odonis @ Mohawk (4.21)

Odonis OdonisI know, I know. Everyone was at the National on night one! But, I’ve seen them, and I was going on Tuesday, so I penciled in a show that I was really excited about.  I’ve been raving about Odonis Odonis since their last EP, and their new record, Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, has been on constant rotation.  While the crowd might not have been what I hoped, the show definitely lived up to my expectations. Show Review: Mac Demarco @ Mohawk (4.13)

Upload Mac DeMarco 20140413212013It’s clear that Mac Demarco has the world eating out of the palm of his hands.  He’s received rave reviews from all over for his recent release, Salad Days, and he blew into Austin, selling out his show at the Mohawk weeks before the show even happened.  Honestly, I didn’t even know he was that huge, but his show definitely proved he’s got what it takes to keep pushing forward.

You can read on for more thoughts about the show, and some photos from our friend Bryan P. at PPI.

Show Preview: Ringo Deathstarr @ Mohawk (3.31)

ringoThe folks over at Mohawk are dedicating themselves to keeping things fun and local on Monday nights, bringing you another great gig in their Showoff Series.  First, let me just tell you that the show is FREE, so you get to enjoy some great bands and spend all your money on booze and MERCH!  But, this Monday’s show has some incredible local acts, and one we’ll all need to say goodbye to.  Ringo Deathstarr is the headliner on the night, and the band needs no introduction; they’re one of the many rad acts across town.  But, you need to come say goodbye to Gal Pals, who unfortunately are relocating due to career opportunities.  We love the duo, and we wish them all the best on their new ventures.  Also, Hola Beach will kick off the night, rounding out a line-up that’s worth your time.  See you there.

Show Review: Four Tet @ The Mohawk (3/1)

Kieran HebdenKieran Hebden is a collector. A hunter-gather of sorts. With fine antiquities or rare stamps, the value of a collection is often determined by the finicky demand of the market. Hebden’s assemblage is a more specialized and unquantifiable archive; at least to the lay-person. Known lovingly as Four-Tet, the London-based producer collects music, or more specifically, samples. Little snippets of carefully curated melody or rythym. Like any artist, the real magic happens in the process and with an ever-growing presence in the electronic world, Four-Tet has managed to become a house-hold name with his ability to build stunning tracks from basically nothing but his snippits.

On Saturday night, he returned to the Capitol city with a new set of offerings on display. The market was indeed ripe.

The 2014 Austin Music Blogger Awards

AMBA 2014 Photo BannerIt was a great event. We were proud to be a part of it.

I have a list of winners and so many photos. Orthy sounded great, buoyed by Ian and Jeramy’s win for best DJs as Learning Secrets. Shivery Shakes ripped after their win for “Sidewalk Talk”. Jess was charming and haunting as ever, congrats. A Giant Dog stole the show with their set, while Mirror Travel may have given some voters buyer’s remorse. Magna Carda is hip-hop in Austin; go see them.

Austin Show Spotlight: Grape St. @ Mohawk (2.24) FREE!!!

the_showoff_2-24_256_256_80_s_c1_c_t_0_0_1Under the masterful skill of their local booking agents, Mohawk has been working on the Showoff series in 2014, offering up Austin music fans free shows on Monday night featuring some great local acts.  This week’s line-up is no different, especially considering our adoration for Grape St.  Curtis and the boys are always entertaining, and if you need proof, you should pick up A Date with You.  But, it’s not all about these guys, with two other incredible acts starting off the night.  Low Times, who’ve been making a name for themselves for several years will start the night off, playing their darkened surf-pysch for your ears. The middle of the night will be filled by Sweet Spirit, which is the band that has sprung out of the ashes of now defunct, but still missed, Bobby Jealousy. You’ve got no excuse to miss free music with great bands…at least I hope you don’t.
