Case Studies – The World is Just a Shape to Fill the Night

Rating: ★★★★½

A few years ago, The Dutchess and the Duke graced the music scene with their debut album of folksy rock and glorious harmonies and were hailed by many as a stunning first release. They followed with Sunset/Sunrise, which was an equally interesting and complete album, building on the success of the first, and once again the band made sure to imprint itself upon listeners. However, during that second album, there was a shirt in importance to the role of Kimberly Morrison in providing those juxtaposed feminine vocals with the deep rasp of Jesse Lortz. So the question that remains is this: will Lortz flop without that constant aspect, or soar out on his own?

Well, to me, the answer is clear as can be when the first song begins to play. “From the Blade of My Love” is the perfect opener for this album because it reveals some of the goodness that can be found here, but it doesn’t give it all away. Soft strumming sets off the song and brings in a heavier sense of folk and less Rolling Stones-esque rock music. The biggest difference that is noticeable from his group efforts is that where you would expect the buzz of guitars to chime in, there are only delicate melodies. But, this is not all Case Studies has to offer. A few songs later, you have the piano driven “Animals,” which opens up a faster pace with less smoky female backing vocals that create a softer and more innocent sound. Also present on this album is a showcase of Lortz’s vocal talent himself, which is consistently exceptional throughout.

In a statement Lortz made about this collaborative album of sorts was that this was the first time that he was genuinely excited to be making music and on The World is Just a Shape to Fill the Night, you can feel this change. On previous albums, the talent, and the excellent song writing is there, but here, the details are all apparent. Each and every song is crafted careful and serene. The sensation while listening to this can only be one of pure bliss as the waves of acoustic guitar, harsh/soft vocals, beautiful stories and the assorted other instrument that makes each song stand strongly alone, yet weave together nicely in a collective sense.

The end result of this side project is something you would expect from Lortz. It’s just as good, if not better than his other work. While it is excellent right from the start, it also has enough depth to appreciate on repeated listens. And you’ll definitely want have repeated listens.

New Music From Young Girls

We rarely get a lot of music out of our neighbors to the east in Houston so imagine our surprise when we were sent this new song from H-town based Young Girls.  I’ve seen these guys on some local Austin bills before, but have never seen them live or given their music much of a listen.  After a few spins of this new track “Six Pack Back Stab” I’m really glad I gave the band a chance.  This jam has some great surf rock style guitar riffs with those muddled vocals eerily similar to our friends Surf City of New Zealand.  Whoever you want to compare them to, you have to admit that they’ve got some great pop melodies.  A debut LP from Young Girls is said to be on its way in mid-March so stay tuned here and to their myspace page for updates.

New Music from Northern Portrait

We talked about how much we loved Danish band Northern Portrait just after the release of their latest full-length, Criminal Art Lovers.  The group is back now with an amazing new 7″, which features album track “Life Returns to Normal” and B-Side “Some People.”  Sure, there’s a bit of a Morrissey sound in the lead single, but you’ll find that the vocal delivery is actually more fulfilling.  I know, bold statement, but you’ll have to see for yourself.  The swirling jangle of the guitars on “Some People” creates an effecting mood, sure to be loved by all modern pop fans. You can get your hands on the new 7″ by heading over to the Matinee order page.

New Music from Les Savy Fav

See that naked guy on top of another man in the picture?  That’s Tim from Les Savy Fav, one of our favorite bands, hands down.  But, this isn’t about Tim’s live antics, it’s about the band’s new album Root for Ruin, which comes to your home stereo on September 14th via Frenchkiss.  You’ll love the angular guitar lines, and the production is simply the best yet from the group.  Be sure to stop by and drop off your email so you can keep up to date on all the news from Les Savy Fav, which you will have to do because this new album is too good to miss.

New Tunes from Nick Curran

curranI can’t help but sort of fall in love with Nick Curran, in a musical sort of way.  The guy mixes classic punk sounds with the romance of Motown, and since I’m an avid fan of both, this is the perfect thing for me.  Nick’s an Austinite, and he has a new record coming out on February 16 titled Reform School Girl. Unfortunately, he’s been sidelined with tongue cancer, so if you’re in Austin, or just a fan of good tunes, you should keep him in your thoughts.  Get well soon Nick…and here’s his title track.

New Music from Fyfe Dangerfield

fyfeFyfe Dangerfield is usually known for his role in Guillemots, but he’s decided to step aside from the group, just for a bit.  His album, Fly Yellow Moon, hits American stores on March 16th.  It’s a supremely British sounding track, encouraging you to stomp your feet along with Fyfe, as his somewhat throaty vocals soar atop the rest of the song.  It might just be an acquired taste, but it’s something I think most of you will enjoy.

New Tunes from Northern Portrait

nThe wonderful thing about being brand loyal, especially when it refers to record labels, is that you are usually guaranteed to like one thing, if you like the rest of the label’s output.  Such is the case with Matinee Records, the label that put out Cats on Fire (one of my 09 must haves).  Now, through their web site, I discovered another gem,  by the name of Northern Portrait.  The group is from Denmark, and they write jangle pop, some might even call it twee. Whatever it is, it’s good. You’ll like it.

New Tunes from Love Is All

loveisallIt really hasn’t been too long since we last heard from Love Is All, the band having put out a 12″ last year with covers and some new tunes.  Now, they’ve switched up labels completely, landing on Polyvinyl for their new release.  Said album hits stores on March 23rd, and is yet another number filled title, Two Thousand and Ten Injuries.  Give this new tune a whirl.

New Tunes from The Art Museums

artIt’s that time of year when bands clamor to build a name for themselves in hopes of being your favorite band in 2010.  Recent Woodsist signees, The Art Museums,  are on that list, hoping to win you over when they release their album Rough Frame in early 2010.  For now though, they’ve got a neat little number to pique your interest, so take a listen and get excited.
