More Tunes from The Black Watch

blackwatchFinally the world seems to be catching up to my good tastes, with mega-zine Rolling Stone posting one of the new singles from The Black Watch.  On this track, you can see the group’s tendency to wrap their pop sensibility in blankets of discordant guitar noise, whilst still holding onto the propulsive beat.  You can only hold the great bands down for so long, and after 17 albums to date, it seems only fair that the group begins to grow mass recognition. The band’s new album, The End of When, is available now via Pop Culture Press Records, and I think its about time you joined the best secret fanclub out there; get on board my friends, you won’t regret it.

New Music from Stornoway

a1275489741_2I love music for the way it comes back into your life at random moments.  Today, while searching for good tunes to present to you all, I stumbled across  a new EP from Stornoway.  I was transported a few years back to a time when I was in love with the Oxford act’s Beachbomber Windowsill LP.  I had completely forgotten about the group until I found the You Don’t Know Anything EP, which will be released on November 11th.  I remember loving the way the lyrics were written, and I’m happy to see that those elements are still intact.  One change I can see is that there’s less of this grand-sweeping chamber pop approach, though the EP is not devoid of some of the nicer little touches, like soft horns.  Anyways, you should listen to this band; they’re pretty good, says I.

Powerful Rocker from Crystal Antlers

crystalantlersIt’s going to be hard for me to tell you how excited I am about the upcoming album, Nothing is Real (October 15th), from Crystal Antlers, but I’ll give it the good old college try.  This band’s been one of our ATH favorites since we started this site, putting on incredible shows and banging out these noisy rock numbers.  That being said, things seem to be moving in a slightly pop direction, at least as far as the band can go.  This track has this hook beneath the brash noise they bring, which is something they’ve become better at as they’ve pushed forward.  It’s got the energy we expect from the band, and we can’t wait until they make it all the way back to Austin once the record is out.  Oh, and they’re also cool because they’re giving out this song as a download…an ancient tradition it seems.

Austin Show Spotlight: Jonly Bonly @ Hotel Vegas (10.4)

1292093_463301757118779_791286496_oI get it folks, ACL just isn’t your thing.  You’re probably trying to stay away from the hordes of people in the downtown area too.  So why not enjoy a righteous night of rock n’ roll by heading over to Hotel Vegas to catch one of the hottest new bands in town.  Okay, so Jonly Bonly might not be new boys, with members of Sweet Talk and OBN IIIs taking the helm, but the band itself is fairly new; I’ve been rocking out to the few songs they passed my way, and I’m expecting them to blow the socks off Austin in no time.  You like catchy proto-punk with a garage rock bent? Yeah, you better be there this Friday night.  They’ll be playing with Trustees and DJ Andrew McCalla to make your night both cheap and fulfilling; it all follows the Richard Buckner set! Oh, and here’s one of those sweet rocking tunes I was talking about.  Meet your favorite new band people!

Driving Pop from Azure Blue

CD63You’ve gotta love the Swedes! They’re even better when, like Azure Blue, they make their way into the American music landscape via their association with our favorite labels.  As previously mentioned here, the band is going to release Beyond the Dreams There’s Infinite Doubt; it’ll be released by one of my top labels for indiepop, Matinee Recordings, next week.  There’s a heavy synth line on this tune, which surely will hit the heart of fans across the globe, but I like the addition of Julia Vero with backing vocals.  Sometimes you can’t deny a great track its day in the sun.

Welcome Return of the Lodger

the_lodgerNow, I’m not sure how I missed this track popping up a few weeks ago, but I’m so glad that I stumbled back upon the Lodger.  They’ve been one of my favorites acts over the last five years, and I was sad, thinking they’d seemingly taken a permanent hiatus.  But, this new jangle pop deliciousness is precisely why I’ve found the band so endearing; it’s while I continue to shout their name even if I’m one the only ones listening.  The guitars are crisp and the vocals are absolutely spot on in this new single.  Plus, it’s just a blistering pace, clocking in with two minutes of the best pop you’ll hear today. Go on, dig it.

ACL Spotlight: Junip

junipYou’re only a few days away from what seems like great weather and a great musical experience.  But, you’re scanning the festival line-up trying to find that one band that will be perfect in this setting.  I’ve got you covered folks: Junip.  While Jose Gonzalez made big waves a few years back, his new project has made some incredible strides, leaving us with a stronger personal attachment.  While Gonzalez still takes a lot of the vocal roles on, the rest of the band work on providing you with these extremely layered sounds that highlight the soft vocals of Jose.  At times, there’s a dark underbelly, but you turn the corner and you’ll find this spiritually up-lifting moment making its way through your speakers.  I can just picture nodding my head (while my arms are crossed; I’m that guy) while the below tune floats atop the breeze into the audience.  The group has this ability to encourage light dancing or swaying, but also has this atmospheric pop attribute that makes them absolutely perfect for anyone looking to fill their schedule with top tier bands.

The group will take to the stage both Saturday’s at 3 PM on the Honda Stage.  You’ll want to catch them in order to here the great jam below.

New Music from Mi Mye

mimyeThere’s a certain type of rock n’ roll that’s really resurfaced in the last few years, and I think we can thank  the breakthrough of Titus Andronicus for that.  There’s another group that’s slinging the same sort of pub-influenced rock, though with less thematic flair: Mi Mye.  These lads hail from the other side of the pond, so you can hear about of that flair in the vocals, but for the most part, the band is spreading music that’s focused on crashing guitar parts that step back from time to time for the vocals to jump to the forefront.  The group just put out their Great Sucksess EP today via Philophobia, so you should grab it while you can.

Pop Rock Number from Broadcaster

broadcasterIf you send me an email with “J Robbins” attached in it somewhere, the odds are I’m going to bump that to the top of my list.  In the case of Broadcaster, that’s worked out for the both of us.  The Long Island three piece are releasing their album, A Million Hours, tomorrow, and the production credits go to Mr. Robbins.  But, don’t let the name fool you, as this record seems more intent on providing us with anthemic rockers we can blast loudly when we need a spiritual pick me up.  Sometimes rock n’ roll is best when its done with simple ventures in mind, just aiming to please.  Yeah, this’ll do.
