ACL may be done and gone, but our post-coverage will still be trickling in this week as we recap both weekends of fun. When I said my Gimme 5 feature was over, I meant for you to maybe not take me too seriously and expect one or two more. So though the festival is over and this is not a preview, we all love playlists and I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one from Nashville based Judah & The Lion. Hit the jump for their words and songs.
A whole ton of praise has been given to Nashville based Sophie Allison and her musical project known as Soccer Mommy. We’ve certainly boarded the hype train for her music over the years and have seen her well deserved popularity and success grow. After her growth last year, Allison stayed relatively quiet on the new music front, but is returning today with her brand new single “lucy”. It has that same sort of mellow, shoe-gazy vibe to it but with a bit more of a polished sound sure to invite even more fans into the fold. If you dig, the song will be released in November via a 7-inch single on Loma Vista Recordings.
I’ve enjoyed my ACL and SXSW Gimme 5 playlists from artists so much that I’ve decided to start running some at random times during the year. Well not totally random, as I plan to focus on artists coming through Austin soon to help build up some hype for their show. It’s also interesting for me to find our what other musicians are listening to before, or even after their show. Kicking off my newish feature is Nashville based songwriter Lydia Luce who is stopping through town on Friday at Mohawk. Hit the jump for some words from Lydia and her 5 song playlist.
I won’t pretend that I knew of Dialup Ghost before their latest single crossed my computer screen. I’m working to remedy that, and perhaps you will too after listening to this wonderful ditty. There’s a fuzzy layer atop the entire risk, but it can’t disguise the natural hook in the vocals. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s a familiarity to that voice, something that seems oddly reminiscent of early Omaha. They just recently released I’m Fine, I’m Fine, so if this sounds remotely like something you’d enjoy, then go ahead and press play…thank me later.
I know Nate and I have been using the word beauty a lot when describing songs recently, and it’s incredible to see how much great stuff we’re being sent. If I’ve ever called a song beautiful in the past, they will pale in comparison to this new track from songwriter Ben Cramer and his musical project known as Old Sea Brigade. It is not only a mesmerizing piece of songwriting, it’s also a heartfelt and truly emotional dedication to a friend of Cramer who was lost to suicide recently. Even the toughest of the tough will feel the sheer power of this song.
Old Sea Brigade will release new LP Ode to a Friend on January 4th via Nettwerk.
It’s a little odd that we’ve never posted about Nashville based fuzz rock group Sad Baxtar in the past, but I plan to rectify that today. Here’s a single and video for the band’s new track “Believe Me” which you should be checking out now. It’s a very nice bit of grungy, sort of 90s throw back alternative rock with a gritty female lead vocal. I highly recommend you listen to this one right now.
Sad Baxtar will release a new EP entitled So Happy on July 20th via Cold Lunch Recordings.
Body Origami is a fairly new band from Nashville, TN who I suggest you check out on this fine hump day. The band just sent over this new song called “Sun Pry” which shows tons of creativity and a unique take on the indie shoegaze movement. I’m reminded of some the slower, dancier songs of Broncho or even locals She Sir. It definitely makes me want to sway and bounce along to the tightness of the song.
Body Origami will drop Bright and Only Mine on September 22nd via Broken Circles.

Nashville songwriter Thad Kopec has impressed my ears today with his latest single entitled “Half Moon/Distant Shore”. It’s a sweeping bit of psychpop music full of soaring moments and multiple rises and falls. With each listen, I think you’ll find some new layer to pick up on and enjoy. Well done sir.

Man it’s been a really long time since we last brought up JEFF the Brotherhood and that’s just a dang shame. Now I believe this single was floating around late last week so I apologize for my tardiness, but the song is too good to not pass along. It’s called “Idiot” and features that good ‘ol rocking and rolling sound we’ve come to love from the band over the years. I see a straight up rocker as an excellent beginning to the week.

Only about a month ago we shared with you the first single from Nashville based Ranch Ghost and today I’m ready to share another impressive song. This one is entitled “Black Caboose” and features more of that sweet psych inspired sound we already loved about the band. I can actually picture the guys playing this song live in my mindwith these snarling vocals and fist pumping punk themes underneath. I dig.
