Night Moves Share Twangy New Track

Minneapolis based Night Moves really caught and held my attention in 2019 with the release of their stunning LP Can You Really Find Me. For a year or so after the release, like most bands in the Covid era, things were slow and not much was heard from the group. But to no one’s surprise, the dudes were holed up in a friend’s cabin to record a whole slew of new material in the coming year. Having already shared two recordings from the sessions, today I am pleased to share with you this new single called “Feel Another Day”. I feel like this band continues to fill this void in need for country inspired, twangy pop music that I just don’t seem to get much more here in TX. Thanks to my Minnesota brothers.

Wy Share New Single + EP Announcement

Sweden’s Wy have already found great success with their last few releases, finally breaking into the US audience with the excellent Marriage LP (2021). Today, the group return with news of a fresh EP on the way, and they’re doing it in striking fashion. Ebba opens the tune with her vocals crawling atop light sonic touches. Soon, the guitar enters the picture, heavily breaking the barrier between pop and rock. Still, Ebba’s voice has this huge range to it, something that would put her right alongside current US darlings like Angel or Sharon. Something Amazing is on the horizon, and it will be released by the ATH revered Rama Lama Records.

Hovvdy Do It Again

Though they may have left Austin due to ever rising costs of living, we will always have a special place in our hearts for Hovvdy. Honestly, at this point if you aren’t a fan, well you must just lack musical awareness or suffer from poor tastes. ZING. Ever the hard workers they tend to be, Hovvdy aren’t resting after their breakthrough album True Love from last year. No, the guys have taken some of the leftovers from the True Love recording sessions and have a new EP coming on May 27th entitled billboard for my feelings. Prior to the EP release, we’ve been treated to this mellow, enchanting new tune “Hide” to enjoy while we await the full drop.

Hovvdy are also about to embark on a lengthy US tour. Tickets are on sale now.

Playful New Tune From Mewn

Though it may be understandable if you haven’t heard of Manchester risers Mewn prior to today, I think they’ll be on your radar after you check out this new single “Two Days”. It has this sort of melodic emotional vibe similar to The National but with this tiny hint of pop playfulness to make it even more engaging and memorable. It progresses quite nicely.

Mewn will be releasing this tune on a new EP due out sometime later this summer. In the meantime, enjoy “Two Day” below.

The S-ft F-cus Release Lousy w’ Love

I’m a bit behind on getting to this S-ft F-cus EP, Lousy w’ Love, but felt like it was the perfect way to get us all into tuneage on this Monday. The Miami based project, helmed by Aussie Danny Lee Allen certainly has a penchant for crafting lo-fidelity guitar pop gems, as you can see by the track hanging out below. At times, you’re like, yeah, sure, Bob Pollard influences. But, then there are these more intricate little melodic guitar moments lurking in and out of the tune, bending strings around harmonic notes that build into this dreamy soundscape buried in the wash of noise. Feel like you need something refreshingly different? Try this one on for size.

Timeshare Returns with New Yellow EP

In case you haven’t been following Timeshare, it’s the solo project of longtime ATH fave Jordan Thompson, known to our six readers as one of the core members of the Ocean Party/Pop Filter. This week, Jordan announced the Yellow EP, the third in a series of EPs that sees Jordan work his way out of a period where he says he “was drifting.” Like all his cohorts, Jordan’s songwriting has an indie rock drive to it, though spun with a unique penchant for pop music; you can listen to the joyous chorus here and hear the euphoric that hits when he Maddison Newman joins in with backing vocals. I’m a fan of the way the song’s verses have this forceful nature to it, while the chorus seems more akin to exploratory folk rock; it’s a cool little juxtaposition. The Yellow EP is out on May 8th.

Our friend Kevin Hairs is back again with his Lil Hospital project, having just released the brand new Welcome to My (Strange) Jangle EP this week. We’ve loved Kevin’s work, plus it’s great, so feels like you should have it on your radar! This whole EP hits a little bit of everything I’ve been into this year, kind of drawing on the San Francisco sound (of late), mixing it with a fondness of Robert Pollard and company, then drenching it in a heavy coat of indiepop jangles. Suffice to say, it’s classic guitar pop you can’t seem to get out of your head. Plus, if you’re in the Brooklyn area this weekend, Lil Hospital have a show with Jeanines at TV Eye…and if you’re not…listen to both bands.

Stream Hey Satellite EP from Field School

You ever land on something that immediately feels like home, feels like the place you belong? Well, for those who were in love with Math and Physics Club (this is Charles’ new band), or even just great pop music, this Hey Satellite EP from Field School should feel as such. The opener “Moon Jellies” had this incredible guitar feel, like this cool shadow blanketing me down here in the hot Texas sun. Then I hit the third track “Jennifer Valentine,” and I was in absolute love; this feels like the first time you turned on If You’re Feeling Sinister, just immediately blown back by the sincerity and the charm, simultaneously. This is a must listen. Right now. Do it.

Flight Mode Announce New EP

Flight Mode won me over with the Texas ’98 EP, which had some nostalgic moments, both for the songwriter, and myself, someone who was living in Texas in 1998. Now, the Oslo band revisit another place in their own history, looking back on the Torshov neighborhood in 2005. Musically, the songwriting is a little more expansive on this first single, perhaps pensive; it feels like something you’d find on a Jade Tree sampler, or a B-side of a Joan of Arc record. I love how the gentle vocals get a heavier backing vocal to give the song just the slightest edge…the faintest, as this track is too pretty to break up. The Torshov ’05 EP is dropping May 6th on Sound as Language.

CIEL Share Fine Everything

CIEL share their new track this week, and with that, they’ve announced a new EP on the horizon…but if you’re listening closely, you’ll also notice a more direct punch to their sound. This track doesn’t feel shrouded in that borderline territory between post-punk and dream pop; it’s a straight ahead ripper, albeit one punctuated by this incredible rhythmic pulse that helps cast the song’s hook deep inside your brain. They’re still hitting you with a nice bit of noise, but they’re not shying away from tying it in with melody and classic pop sensibility. This is our first taste, but already we’re thirsting for more from the Brighton bunch.
