Battle Ave Share My Year with the Wizard

Listening through to the latest tune from Battle Ave has me remembering the early days of Wolf Parade. Why, you may ask? Well, at times, the New York outfit seems like they’re hanging just on the cusp of being weird and out there, but they’re tethered by some melodic vocals, tying the song down to a more accessible approach. I like that it seems like the band could get really heavy and release some killer riffs, yet ultimately they’ve crafted a really solid pop song that you want to play on full blast. If you’re digging on it, keep your eyes and ears open, as the band return in October with their Battle Ave EP.

Mirror Trash Release Faraway

UK quartet Mirror Trash have made their way onto these pages before, and it’s high time we gave them another run with their striking new single, “Faraway.” The song features a minute of dreamy guitar meandering, wondering through the atmospheric universe. Those notes hang just on the edge of jangling, the way I like them. Then, these solemn vocals into the foray, almost disinterested, up until the chorus. There, you get this little attitude adjustment that should certainly charm as the guitars take back the lead and shimmer into the foreground. The band are slated to release a new EP early next year, and this is our first sneak peak at what’s ahead!

Straight Banger From Stuck

Looking for some short and sweet rock music to brighten up your day and get you ready for the weekend? Well, then you need look no further than this new single “City of Police” from Chicago quartet Stuck. It is most definitely a song inspired by the post-punk genre but offers a hell of a lot more intensity and passion in it’s 2 minutes than most things I am currently hearing on the scene. I think you’ll dig it as well.;

Stuck will release a new EP entitled Content That Makes You Feel Good on August 13th via Exploding in Sound Records. Pre-orders are live now.

Treeboy & Arc Announce New EP

If anything good came out of Covid lockdowns, it has to be the slew of new music artists created during their long time stuck at home. Leeds based Treeboy & Arc were one of those busy groups during quarantine, having managed to record an entire EP of new material. The new extended player, Life Preserver, includes four new tracks of material with this lead single, “Role Models”, streaming prior to the full August 6th EP release date. I love how the track pushes what we might consider post-punk tendencies but with a more restrained approach to give it a very Devo meets Idles feel. I think you’ll enjoy it.

The Smittens Share New EP

If you’re in need of your early morning pop dosage, well, be sure to check out the latest Wanna Go Dancin (So Far Away) EP from Vermont’s The Smittens. The EP opens with a brand new tune commissioned by Burlington City Arts for their Bubblegum Pop Exhibition; the tune’s got tons of vocal layering to craft an undeniable hook that will have you clapping your hands spiritedly. “Year of Happiness” is a lost tune that was recorded during the band’s 2014 sessions for Love Record Breaker, but somehow didn’t make the cut. There’s a few remixes too, and another unheard tune from the band’s early days, and in the end, all the tunes are going to get your day going right. So start here. Courtesy of Fika Recordings.

Stream New EP From Low Horizon

Houston based outfit Low Horizon came onto my radar a couple of years ago and I’ve been eagerly awaiting new music from the band ever since. Well now the trio are back with not just one, but three new tunes on a brand new EP of material entitled Two Days. The EP highlights the bands sort of old school, garage rock meets indie sound similar to bands like Sleater-Kinney or Built to Spill. I’ve been lucky enough to share the stream for you fans, and if you dig it, consider throwing them a few dollars over on bandcamp for a download. Viva la Texas!

Space Daze Release Visible Spectrum

Before Space Daze, Danny Rowland played in Seapony; I was fortunate to book them for this great show at SXSW where they played with Twerps and Suckers next to a chicken coop. But, the last few years Danny’s really been focusing on his solo stuff, and while there are some sonic similarities to the work, he’s clearly making things his own on the new Visible Spectrum EP. I think you just need to listen to “Don’t Mind” to hear him breaking free of dreamier tendencies and going straight for the bouncing pop jugular! Honestly, I love the contrast of the guitar sound against the steady thump of the beat on this tune, all the while Danny sings just in the distance. But, to be honest, you’d be remiss if you skipped past any of these songs, so just be good to yourself and enjoy the EP below!

Rider Release Debut EP

Rider might be a new name on your radar, as it is mine, but the project is helmed by Frode Stromstad of I Was a King. The Norwegian project also includes Honey Radar‘s Jason Henn on drums, which should further our interest on this side of the pond. This project definitely pulls in Frode’s familiarity with little nuggets of pop, though admittedly, this feels a bit grittier, in the best way possible. “Deep Rivers” has some faint GBV references, though Stromstad’s voice is too kind, offering more of a melodic feel. I think the easiest to access for folks will be “Smell the Floor,” built on huge riffs disguised beneath layers of fuzz, though rest assured there’s melodic treasure lurking beneath this song’s surface. Just imagine if Comet Gain were a power pop band; then you’ll understand Rider. Stream the whole EP below!

Carpet Burn Share Butterfinger Hands

First, let there be fair warning for US audiences, as this song is not at all about the heralded Butterfinger snack. But, Carpet Burn, a new act led by Kayley Langdon and Tam Richards-Matlakowski is rather paying homage to how we all let things slip out of our hands, both literally and figuratively. The song is this pseudo-psych pop that creeps in along Kayley’s synth work, almost like a pop horror score; the wonky bounce helps set up the falling vocal delivery that seems to tumble down to the ground…like any object would if you indeed did have ‘butterfinger hands.” Plus, the song wraps up with a great noisy freakout that’s sure to set fire to your soul. The band will release their I Can’t Believe It’s Not Carpet Burn EP on June 18th via Spoilsport Records.

Lost Ships Drop Nostalgia

Follow our site? Well, then you’ve likely seen us supporting Portsmouth’s Lost Ships band; they just released the Nostalgia EP via Subjangle Sounds. The group, in my opinion, likes to walk a fine line between jangling indiepop and classic power pop sounds. In this listen, you’ll get heavy riffs, fuzzy of course, but they can quickly turn things light-hearted and toe-tapping in a heartbeat. Take “Shirley from Shirley,” opening with more of a soft brood over heavy circling guitars and melodic “ahhs;” then those sharp riffs dance their way into your living room, forcing your hips to swing and your feet to shuffle. Thinking that “Inside My Head” might be my favorite of this lot, just an energetic bop the whole way through, and I can’t wait for you to enjoy it too! Stream the EP or buy it HERE.
