With members of Dirty On Purpose, Sisters, TEEN, and Darlings, new band Drawing Boards from Queens obviously has a lot of fire power for a new band. One can hear the power from the super group with this new, loud single called “Poor Bentley”. The listener will be treated to some expertly produced drums, well timed vocals, and some clean guitar riffs. Check it out.

Queens based rock band WIVES sent out this new track called “The 20 Teens” yesterday and I had to get it out to you people today. The song is a straight up rock n roll song with just a little bit of quirkiness to bring in a sort of Wolf Parade, Spencer Krug vibe. I first got turned on to Holy Tunics when they dropped Butter Dish last year, so I’m really stoked that Hit Parade Lemonade Supersonic Spree has been announced. I think you’ll find that this new single from the record fully employs the band brandishing their best power-pop. In the opening guitar lines you almost get this grungy college rock vibe, which fits the initial vocal burst. However, “bahs” and harmonies jump in on the chorus, satiating your pop needs for the day, or for these 2.5 minutes anyways. Good marker for this might be a band like Sloan, though feel like they’re going just a notch above in their volume production here. If you need guitar pop, then I suggest you keep an eye out for the new LP; it drops via the esteemed Meritorio Records on June 14th.

As soon as I put on this new track from Patio, I couldn’t help but think back to one of my favorite acts of the 00s, No Shouts, No Calls from Electrelane. Now, New York’s Patio have a bit more of a casual indifference in their vocal delivery, but you can still hear touches of sharp post-punk hooks and bouncing rhythms that grab listeners and spin them around. For a band with just one EP under their belt, this single strikes you as a fully formed outfit ready to take over your listening habits. Might just be the most exciting bunch I’ve heard in weeks; look for their debut LP, Essentials, out April 5th via Fire Talk Records.
As many of us head back to work full time for the first time in awhile, it’s important to find some music to uplift your spirit and keep you focused. My new friend Mr. Jason Matu out of Brooklyn, NY has just the thing for you with his new single “I Don’t Wanna Do It”. His sound reminds me distinctly of a guy like Damien Jurado if he wrote more ironic/funny songs like David Bazan. Those are of course two artists I love so naturally this track is tailor made for me and I hope you enjoy it as well.
Soccer Cousins have now released three singles, and they’re all pretty special. They dwell near the boundary line between indie rock and emo, but this new single has them sitting pretty firmly in the indie rock side, almost right next to the Thermals. The guitar notes bend around the lyrics, almost playfully teasing you. Then the “ba da ba ba bahs” enter with a more emphatic guitar ring in the chorus, and you’re absolutely hooked on it. This just goes to show you that in this end-of-year madness, there’s still some gems lurking, so don’t overlook this one.
Harms is the solo project from Brooklyn based songwriter Jake Harms who previously spent a majority of his time in indie band What Moon Things. To be honest, I am not super familiar with Jake’s work in his primary band, though my extreme love of his new solo EP will likely turn me on to all his work. The new EP, entitled Aquarium, is a loaded 6 song short player with highly emotional vocals and Gothic pop themes. In particular, lead single “Pop Song” is definitely one of my favorites of the year and has already reached 10 plays on my iTunes. Something about the unique and totally transparent songwriting, paired with the slick beats, has me putting this on the “highly recommended” list.
It’s fun to follow your favorite bands, see who they’re following, see who they’re playing with…you’ll likely discover something new, as I did with Deep Sea Peach Tree. The band just released the EP below, and they shared the stage that night with ATH faves, Pale Lights. But, the musical link ends there, as DSPT has more of a chilled pop vibe, even going so far as to declare themselves “surfgaze.” The Milk-Based Religion EP is definitely rewarding, opening up with the wayward guitars of “Mellow Richard” and wrapping up with the EP’s best tune, “Felt,” which adds some energetic pop vibes to the four songs. Whatever, it’s Monday. And this EP is tasty.
Our amigo Justin Giles Wilcox grew to some moderate fame with his incomparable work in bands Nassau and Moonlight Bride. Having spent some years with those projects, Wilcox is stepping out again with his new project called Monteagle. We’ve previously heard his single “East L.A.” leaving us wanting more, and low and behold, here’s another new song today to build our anticipation of the new album. This one, “Master” features that cool, calm, and collected sound from Wilcox which creates a beautiful, soulful indie folk track.
Monteagle will release new album Midnight Moon on November 30th via Fire Talk Records.

Well well well, what do we have here? A band with a throw back, sort of post-emo sound? RayRay is of course going to be all over that. Bringing us that sweet throw back sound today is Long Island based group Masceal with their latest single “Sure Thing, Shelly”. I am immediately taken back to the glory days of music with bands like American Football or even The Promise Ring. This is a truly great song.
