13557836_290760167940194_5618505617977878544_nLadies and gentlemen, knights and knaves, sires and maidens– the time is drawing near for the inaugural Sound on Sound Festival and we here at ATH could not be more excited. Not only have the SOS folks put together a stacked bill filled with big time acts from all over the indie world, but they’ve also made sure to stick to their Austin roots by snagging some of the great local acts from around town. Sure, maybe you’ve seen their name on a poster for a show, but now is the time to make sure you show up for their set and give them some love. Read on for 5 local bands that you shouldn’t miss this weekend.

*Don’t forget about Late Knights, which is another excellent opportunity to catch some great bands– local and international.

Show Pics: A Night On Red River

dsc_0521Every once in a while, I grab the camera knowing there are a few bands playing that will have some friends out and about, on stage or off. Last Friday night was one such night with Tres Oui and Lou Rebecca featured in a record release show for Fort Never at Cheer Up Charlie‘s and Night Drive closing out a night of electronic goodness at Swan Dive (a venue I don’t got to often enough given the lineups recently).

Join me after the break with plenty of pics and quick few thoughts on Tres Oui‘s new jams and revised lineup and my first set in front of Lou Rebecca.

Pecan Street Musings

Pecan Street 29The lineup for Pecan Street Festival was quite ATH friendly. Given that two of the wife’s favorite Austin acts, Night Drive and Knifight, were scheduled for set times that book-ended the dinner hour a couple blocks from Parkside, we figured we would take in all that Sixth could offer before it got dirteh.

Thoughts, pics, etc.

Show Pics: A Cure Tribute @ Cheer Up Charlies (3/4)

Cure TributeIt was a busy weekend. There was a race going on out at COTA, there was house prep for the long run into downtown known as SxSW, a friend’s birthday and this little show that friends put together where several of my favorite local bands were covering Cure songs to benefit The Teenage Cancer Trust. Among participants, we get Bali Yaaah, Modern Medicine, Knifight with half of Night Drive, Moving Panoramas and many more…

Click through for a few thoughts on best-of performances and plenty of pics to see what you missed or relive a great night.

Show Pics: Free Week 2016 Pt. 1

Night DriveMy turn for giving Free Week a little love.

Night one with camera was a solid lineup at The Mohawk to celebrate our friend’s birthday. Pooneh is kind of a big deal in music photography and a damn nice person to boot. I was at the show and bought her a beer when she turned twenty-one five long years ago. Heh. But here we were with an excuse as good as any to have a solid lineup of bands with a huge amount of variation in genres. Featured and immortalized by the camera’s Shivery Shakes, Big Bill, Unknown Relatives, Milezo and Night Drive.

We persevered against the drizzly evening for a crisp night. Click through, please.

Show Pics: CHVRCHES @ Emo’s (12/17)

CHVRCHESThere have been several bands over the years that we have seen grow and graduate the indie blogoshpere. I have seen CHVRCHES many times, loved the band’s material, met the band while Lauren was still too shy to out from the backline between the giant synth stands. During their set at FFFX, we discovered that she has gotten past that stage fright and is now a performer beyond the skilled vocals.

Now, I have been on a bit of a photo burnout sabbatical. It is what happens after weeks of festivals back to back to back with shows scattered in between. I figured I’d break that shooting manual focus lenses, going B&W, by checking a local fave in Night Drive and seeing CHVRCHES on the smallest stage they’ll play stateside until the regrettable reunion tours in 2035. Heh.

Give to Habitat for Humanity. Click through for pics.

ATX Spotlight: Have A Nice Weekend

Night DriveWill I see anyone out this weekend? Seems everyone I know went to Lolla to photo and party. I want to Lolla, but not really. I reckon I’ll be at GvB at Mohawk. On to the week ending jam.

I hate covers and remixes. …usually.

I insist the best remix of a song is the Sasha remix of Doves‘ “Jetstream“. This Have A Nice Weekend post brings you another of those cover/remix exceptions. Our friends Night Drive have done a cover as the next yearly installment of their Summer Cover series of Perfume Genius‘s track “Queen”. You can download it off the embed. That synthy hook you love from the original song finds new life.

Night Drive Release New Music + Video

Night DriveIf you have taken our advice over the last couple of months, you would have already heard this song during a Night Drive set. “Easy to Lie” was an instant ATH IT Department favorite; slightly droning, shimmy inducing, ringing guitar layer. Just so happens, this jam is now available for streaming at the Night Drive soundcloud and to push things over the top, they did a video for the song. It is a stylish throwback, something these guys get pegged for musically, so it all feels right. Click here for iTunes buying.

Confetti.

Show Pics: Knifight Release Party @ Cheer Up’s (2/6)

Upload Knifight Release 04We are championing the locals. One of the bands we love is Knifight and while we sometimes think a few locals play too many shows, we cannot accuse Knifight of over-saturation. When we get a chance, we usually take it. Gothy, gazy, noisy, wavey, industrial and bad-ass, the band has a new album out, seven tracks that are given space to breathe progress.

To celebrate the album, Cheer Up hosted a show with GOST and ATH faves Night Drive to dance in the night. Head past the break and get a few thoughts and the usual batch of pics.

Show Pics: A Night Out In Austin (11/29)

Night DriveI love the shows that happen during the Thanksgiving weekend. Students are home, it is usually local bands hanging out with friends, perhaps getting back from the road or just popping up to keep sharp before heading into the studio. Last Saturday was just that kind of night with two of my favorites in Night Drive and Shivery Shakes at Cheer Up Charlie’s and Holy Mountain, respectively. As a bonus, I got to see The David Ruffins and Ishi and so many friends that things degraded into full on shenanigans. Yes, shenanigans, full on. #lightpaintingcockandballs

Back to the music, The David Ruffins sounded like Austin “in the day”, Ishi brought the kimono-beard dance party, Night Drive made a point to engage every single person in the crowd before heading off to the studio (yay!) and Shivery Shakes sounded super tight after a stint on the road.

Click through and let me take on a visual journey…
