I’m sure that most of you reading this have heard the tragic story of Esme Barrera’s death that came all too soon.  As Esme was such an active individual in our music community, tons of great people are coming together to support her family and celebrate her life.  One such event is taking place on Thursday night on the east side at Scoot Inn.  The show features stellar local acts Follow That Bird, Love Collector, The Dead Space, Foreign Mothers, Kingdom of Suicide Lovers, Neighbor, Ichi Ni San Shi, and Eric Static.  Door cover will be on a pay you what you want sliding scale between $5-$10 with all proceeds going to Esme’s family.  Good music for a great cause.  You can also donate directly to Esme’s family via a recently created blog or buy a shirt for Esme.

I know that there’s tons of great shows in town this weekend, but one of the better local shows features some pretty prominent bands.  First off, you’ll get Pure X headlining the gig, and they’ve received a lot of great press nationally, not to mention from this writer in particular.  Also on the bill is popular up-and-comer, SleepOver, who’ve just released their latest record.  Then, you’ll get a bunch of other acts like Silent Diane, Survive and Children of the Grave, all of which comes your way via the most excellent folks over at Scoot Inn.  If you’re free Friday, there’s only one place to be.

Date Tuesday, August 23rd
Location Scott Inn

One of the bands that seems to have flown beneath the radar in the Austin scene is Bloody Knives.  Their fusion of shoegaze, post-punk, noise, ambient, etc is hands-down one of the most unique sounds in our nation, let alone our little town.  They’ll be putting on an exciting show over at Scoot Inn, and before hordes of Longhorns begin to fill out the bars, you should jump at the chance to see these guys; they can’t be our little secret for too much longer!  Also on the bill are other great local acts, The Vessel and Real Book Fake Book. Come on folks, now’s our time to get behind our local scene.

Friday Top 5: SXSW Hangovers

You don’t really think I’m going to list my top 5 hangovers during SXSW, do you? That would be a task that would take years of scouring my brain and the memories of many who have been involved. I know I can be an idiot sometimes, but give me a little credit. I’m talking about what seems to be the lingering taste of that stale, warm, bitterness, that some people in this town, and many outside have lingering on their cranial palate after last week. The wise and beautiful Nathan Lankford already laid it out here on this site recently, and as this week has passed in the wake of SXSW, some of those points rang incredibly true, and others have reared their ugly heads to add to the growing Medusa.

Now, lets get one thing straight before we get too far into this. I love SXSW! I love the official SXSW and I can’t say that I completely hate the non-official part of SXSW. I’ve worn the badge, the wristband, and done the RSVP till my fingers hurt, but something needs to change.
