Show Preview: Mr. Gnome @ Stubbs (11/15)

Date 11/15/12
Location Stubbs
Doors 9pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

Mr. Gnome is a great up and coming band that I caught during SXSW last year, and I can honestly say that they can fully deliver in the live setting.  Those looking to get a good show in before the craziness of this weekend ensues should head on down to the indoor stage at Stubbs on Thursday to see this rocking good band live.  Local upstarts The Baker Family will be more than adequate in providing your opening support for the evening.  You’ll enjoy it.

Show Preview: Divine Fits @ Stubbs (10/31)

Date 10/31/12
Location Stubbs
Doors 7pm
Tickets $20 @ Frontgate

Tomorrow is everyone’s favorite spooky holiday and a great way to celebrate would be heading over to the Divine Fits show over at Stubbs.  With one ATH crew member already verifying that the supergroup can pull of one hell of a live show, this is sure to be a must see show.  Oh and let’s not forget that ATH approved band Cold Cave is providing opening support, so now I just don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t be here.

We’ve also heard that a costume contest is going down along with some horror movie snippets between band performances.  I’m in.

Show Preview: JEFF the Brotherhood @ Stubbs (10.22)

Date 10.22.12
Location Stubbs Indoor
Doors 8:00 PM
Tickets $10 from Stubbs

I can’t imagine how loud it’s going to be inside Stubbs tonight, but I have a feeling we’re all going to need some ear plugs to catch this great rock show over at Stubbs.  First on the bill is Jeff the Brotherhood, who’ve nailed down crunchy guitar rock with powerful hooks and anthemic lyrics on albums Hypnotic Nights and We Are Champions.  Then you have Diarrhea Planet, who definitely have a taste for the distorted guitar sound turned all the way up.  And you can’t go wrong by showing up early to catch locals Low Times! If you need a little bit of noise and a lot of fun, see you at Stubbs.

Show Review: Lord Huron @ Stubb’s (10/3)

Ryan and Nathan gave Lord Huron an atta-boy during SxSW 2011. Tough choice for the photo-guy, Menomena or Lord Huron? Well, I hadn’t seen Lord Huron yet, so I jumped at that show to enjoy a relaxing evening at Stubb’s Jr (that’d be the inside stage).

This was the second night of their tour after an opening night in Denton supporting the pending release Lonesome Dreams, due next week. Night Moves will be opening for this stretch on the road, a nice add for a solid bill with just enough contrast in styles to make sure you had a little something for everyone.

Read on for a few more show notes and plenty of pics.

Plenty of great shows to choose from this week, with many of them coming on back to back nights Wednesday and Thursday.  My show pick for Wednesday has to go to indie surf/dream pop band Lord Huron.  I’ve never actually seen this band outside of their stellar SXSW performances show it should be nice to check ’em out for a full on show.  Supporting the band for the night is more than adequate opener Night Moves.  Great lineup, great venue = sure to be bad ass show.

Show Review: Beach House @ Stubbs (9.20)

In what was an absolutely hectic night for the Austin music scene, we started our evening at Stubbs catching two of the better acts in the whole scene, The Walkmen and Beach House.  For my two cents, there was only one clear-cut winner on the evening, but for that you’ll have to read on.

…not to mention you’ll get great pics from Brian Gray that you can’t get with your cellphone.

Do I really need to say anything about this show?  I don’t think so.  If you don’t have tickets, try to find some on craigslist kids.  This show is sure to be one of the most anticipated in town of the year.  Both of these bands are some of the few that can actually deliver what they record into the live setting.  Opening support is provided by Dustin Wong.  Oh and make sure you note the early door times so you don’t miss anything.

Show Pics: Pujol @ Stubb’s (9/7)

Final bit of catch up from last Friday. Pujol played Stubb’s.

In a way, Slash opened for them. The outside was over run by rock and/or roll played loudly, Myles Kennedy a far better technical vocalist than that guy with funny hair and a cat face that wrecked GnR. Cell phones abounded for the rousing closer, “Paradise City”. …and then Pujol started playing inside.

Quite a few partiers came in from outside to check out the Nashville trio, hearing the big power jams about home and girls and stuff. So peep the pics and read a couple more words after the break.

Well September is finally upon us and the show outlook for the entire month is looking busy as hell for us music fanatics.  The start of all this madness really kicks off on Thursday night with a sure to be incredible show going down at Stubbs put on by Yeasyaer.  As an ATH staff member that’s seen the band on numerous occasions, I can assure everyone that you’ll be in for a treat (if your skin doesn’t melt off in the heat).  Opening support for the evening is provided by Daedelus.  I’m also going to take this opportunity to post on of the best singles of the year “Henrietta” because, for some reason, we never posted it in the first place.  Dumb.
