Emma Louise Signs to Frenchkiss

You know, Frenchkiss Records quietly goes about releasing some awesome acts: they’ve got Cut Off Your Hands, Suckers and now they have the wonderful Emma Louise.  The Australian singer has signed on with the label to release Full Hearts and Empty Rooms, her new EP, on March 13th.   Her first song from the album, “Jungle,” is centered around this nice little groove, but Emma’s voice is what will definitely win you over.  In a world full of Lana del Rey’s, it’s nice to have someone of that ilk doing something you can believe in.  She’s also just put out a really nice video to go with the jam, and you can check that out HERE.  Don’t forget to look up her tour schedule, as she’ll be zooming in for SXSW.

SXSW Interview: Shimmering Stars

Our SXSW interviews continue today with Canada’s Shimmering Stars.  Last year they released Violent Hearts on Hardly Art Records, and while it had a little bit of the modern jangle, it harkened back to a purer era in rock n’ roll…the sort you’re mom or dad probably played around the house when you were growing up (I know mine did).  Check out what singer/guitarist Rory has to say on the upcoming festival and life in general. New Pop from Gold Fields

It’s Friday, so I wanted to start off the day with something springy that will give us all a bit of a pick-up.  So I’m here to offer you this kicking new track from Australia’s Gold Fields.  By their account, they’ve worked hard to make everything sound different on their self-titled EP, switching it up from track to track.  This song has a solid groove, accentuated by the extra percussive elements throughout.  Those of you clamoring for more will get to hear a whole album worth of material later in 2012, but also look out for the band at SXSW and a few other scattered shows throughout the states in the next month.

ATH SXSW Show & Sampler (3/16/12)

It’s that time again folks, time for SXSW and another awesome show by yours truly here at ATH.  This year we’re teaming up with our amigos over at local label Sonora Records to bring what is arguably the best SXSW show around.  We’ve got a sweet lineup that’s been worked on behind the scenes for months now with some equally incredible local sponsors.  Here are the deets on the show after the jump.

SXSW Preview: Psychic Ills

Ready for more SXSW rock?  Well, the Psychic Ills aren’t necessarily going to bring you straight ahead rock n’ roll; the band has done lots of experimentation with their sound since their inception in 2003.  Most recently, they released Hazed Dream on Sacred Bones Records, signaling a slight departure from their more traditional sound. It’s definitely going to get lumped into the psychedelic genre, which is probably an easy descriptor, but I laud the band for their vast experimentation over the years.  I hear bits of Spiritualized in songs like “Mind Daze” from their recent release, yet the song evokes different qualities depending upon your own personal tastes.  In reading their bio, you’ll see that the experiments and testing of waters doesn’t just revolve around their efforts in music, but extends to their association with very art mediums while living in NYC.  You lump that in with all their musical trials over the last several years, and you’re in for a fascinating show that will definitely leave you wanting to follow them around Austin for the week.

SXSW Preview: Jacuzzi Boys

It’s almost impossible to believe that SXSW is already around the corner.  Almost.  Things get crazy busy around these parts with planning a party, interviewing bands, and mapping out some semblance of a schedule for the week.  At times we all forget that this aint about getting wastey on free booze, but rather “about the music man”. I hope you’ll pardon my lame attempt at an introduction to this post and simply take note and listen to Hardly Art’s finest Jaccuzi Boys.  Follow the jump for more. Read more

New Music From Mirror Lady

Here’s a nice little lo-fi pop number called “You Left Me” just sent our way from Cali based band Mirror Lady.  The chorus is catchy as hell with it’s washed out vocals and head bobbing beat.  A self-titled EP from the band is due towards the end of March, but more tuneage from the band can be had on their bandcamp page.  I’d also recommend the song and video for “Roman Candles”.  You can also catch the band live when they stop into town next month for SXSW.
