So it’s cold and rainy… the perfect excuse for you to stay home tonight and watch a movie like a loser, right? WRONG. Tonight at The Mohawk inside, locals Reservations are going to bring their delicate folk tunes to your ears, and you don’t want to miss them. Jana Horn’s beautiful vocals accompanied by soft acoustic guitar and those swelling drums are sure to make for the perfect warming ambiance. Tickets are cheap and this full night of music includes Ama and a split EP release of Dwight Smith and Nathan Wilkins (Hikes).  If you weren’t already persuaded, listen to the track below and it will help you make up your mind.

It’s that time of week again that we all know and love… its end! Here’s a list of all the shows you could and should be attending this Friday through Sunday. Enjoy the fact that you live in a city that not only has killer live tunes always, and that it never really gets too cold for you to go out and enjoy them. CaribouYou ever notice how a bunch of tours either kick off or finish up in Austin? In the case of Caribou, they were finishing up a successful run out in support of the latest effort Our Love. The bummer about being the last stop, no vinyl at the merch table. The best part, whoa hooollly shit is the band tight. Let me get this out of the way, this was one of the best live performances of “electronic” music I have ever seen. Dan Snaith and his team of musicians have found a way to make those key elements, the live drum and overlayed organic pieces of the recorded material, present in the live show. Flutes to extra percussion to ringing guitar licks, the material comes to life that then absorbs the crowd into a hypnotic tunnel.

I feel so jealous of the people in Toronto that get that homecoming show.

Everyone knows the very best way to start out a week is with a killer show, which is why you should get your tail over to The Mohawk tonight to catch New York’s Blonde Redhead. They’ve been doling out alternative music that has moved through several genres for quite a while now, so you can expect a night of veteran performance. Opening for them is the experimental rock of Dot Hacker, a group from California. If you’re still on the fence, have a listen to a track from Blonde Redhead’s latest release, Barragán and make up your mind.

We Were Promised JetpacksAfter a short day of rest from festivaling, the ATH crew was back at it again on Tuesday night, braving the cold weather for an evening of Scottish indie rock music outside at The Mohawk. The bill was stacked for a great night–The Twilight Sad‘s heavy indie rock and the more poppy sound of We Were Promised Jetpacks offered a mixing of genres for the evening, but kept it rock and roll. It was a special evening for all, but an even more special evening for B.Gray and Nathan, who were celebrating their Manniversary. Washed OutThis was pretty much a double headliner show for me. The first time I saw both of the bands that played last night at The Mohawk, Small Black and Washed Out, they played overlapping sets during a SxSW day party, the former backing the latter. Fast forward many years and we are reliving those glory days of buzz and free bandanas.

Washed Out nearly got washed out the last time they played The Mohawk.

Now, we do have the treat of Small Black opening. The first time I saw both bands live was at the Mohawk, playing together. Pretty cool. #fullcircle

Ty SegallA Ty Segall show is always going to be an event at the Mohawk.  Whether it’s his own performance, or the crowd jam packed into the space, you always leave knowing your place.  Brian and I hit up his latest Austin stop last Friday, with local openers ThinkNoThink and Wand kicking the night off.  Despite a drizzle here or there, it was sweltering inside, if one was to judge from the faces exiting the pit.  Read on for a few brief thoughts and B. Show Review: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ The Mohawk (8/11)

Clap Your Hands Say YeahBrave fans braved potentially threatening weather; it smooth poured with tons of lightning out at my house in the hours before I left to head downtown, but The Hawk was spared such drama. Load in, soundcheck, my moles on the inside let me know all was well. Rain dotted the evening, never really coming down in quantity, just a smattering to humidify things to “moist” levels.

Roger Sellers brought along Matt Hines of ATH faves The Eastern Sea to go acoustic, Alec Ounsworth took advantage of a little extra time in the schedule to play some songs solo not often heard live and then piloted the whole band known as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah through a set of folk music disguised as indie dance party classics and new stuff that I actually enjoyed A LOT.
