Show Preview: Tennis @ the Parish (5/8)

Date Tuesday, May 8th
Location The Parish
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $13 from Frontgate

Indie-pop with female vocals has really taken over the Interwebs in the last few years, and leading that attack (along with others) has been Tennis.  The group returns to Austin on Tuesday night over at the Parish, coming into town to support their recent release, Young and Old.  It’s a gem of an album, and the group’s sounds will assuredly sound spectacular coming through the great sound system at the Parish. Opening the evening will be Vacationer, so it won’t be too late an evening, but it will be something you pop lovers will absolutely have to attend.

Show Preview: Bear in Heaven @ The Parish (4/24)

Date Tuesday, April 24th
Location The Parish
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $14 from Frontgate

Just looking at the opening bill for this show at the Parish on Tuesday should get you excited; both Doldrums and Blouse have made big waves in the indie pond this year, earning new fans and much acclaim.  But, the spotlight surely has to be on Bear in Heaven, a band that continues to push themselves.  Their recent release, I Love You It’s Cool, was exceptional in its construction, coming off a great deal brighter than their earlier effort.  You can also be assured that they’ll bring some elaborate lighting/video with them as they did during their recent SXSW performances.  Put that with the always excellent sound at the Parish and we’re all going to have a great night.

Show Pics: Bowerbirds @ The Parish (4/11)

Middle spot in a busy night of music photography, Bowerbirds headlined a show at the Parish. Dry the River opened, but I only caught the last two songs due to shooting Real Estate and Twerps (more on that to come).

Once again, good booking for The Parish to highlight the subtle tones and layered organic melodies. And good lights help the mood. Head past the break to check out the shots of the show from a band that delivered one of our favorite albums so far this year.

The week’s picking up folks, and Wednesday is definitely a doozy. One of the shows we think is worth your time is checking out the Bowerbirds over at the Parish.  I fell in love with their most recent release, The Clearing, which has the group sounding at their best.  Their sound is sort of quieted folk music, so you couldn’t ask for a better venue than going over to the Parish to catch the group.  I have a feeling they’ll be giving an incredibly emotional performance that will leave you talking about it for quite some time.  Dry the River will be opening the evening, so be sure to get their early, as they are another act worthy of your attention.

Show Preview: Parish Underground Presents…Literature/The Hawks and More (3/28)

Date Wednesday, March 28th
Location Beale Street Tavern
Doors 700p
Tickets $5 at the Door

In the post SXSW lull, we get the chance to see tons of great local acts, and the fine folks over at the Parish are working on a new project specializing in local talent.  They’ll be showcasing several local acts over at Beale Street Tavern (next to BD Rileys), which might help spread music back into 6th Street. The night features personal favorites Literature, but also other local acts we’re interested in checking out, such as The Hawks, Foreign Mothers and Field Dress.  It’s super cheap, so that should be all the reason alone to get out and support the scene.

Show Pics: Los Campesinos @ The Parish (2/17)

It was a double header night of show pics for me. I started at St. David’s Church for Islands and walked down the steep hill to catch Los Campesinos. I guess I’ll post the Campes first.

I missed the opener, but was able to mill around in a very enthusiastic crowd to get some pics. This was the first of two night stand, so some songs requests from the crowd were turned down. “We have to save some for tomorrow night.”

Read on to see the pics and get a few more notes from the show.

Los Campesinos! are coming into Austin tomorrow night for a two night stint at The Parish downtown.  Having seen the band on multiple occasions, I can assure you that the cheap ticket price is worth your time and money.  Opening support on both nights will be provided by Parenthetical Girls.  Friday seems like a busy night in Austin so maybe we’ll see ya there on Saturday?

Great singer songwriter type show going down at The Parish on Saturday night featuring ATH favorite Mason Jennings and songwriter Jillian Edwards.  As always, Saturday night in Austin has plenty of shows to choose from, but this one should definitely be on your radar if it isn’t already.

Some great shows are going down this weekend to get all of you crazy kids back into the swing of things after a long free week in Austin.  Let’s start the long holiday weekend off right with a show by Austin band Balmorhea at The Parish.  Joining the talented band on stage are Peter and the Wolf and Botany.  This should be a great venue to hear all the intricacies of some great local and talented musicians.

Show Review: Holy Ghost! @ The Parish (11/17)

The busy show season winds down.

Third night of the week at The Parish, Holy Ghost! for a change of pace after seeing AABondy w/Gold Leaves and Real Estate. Alex is the frontman, Nick lurks behind the drumkit. By bringing along four more, their songs come to life. These guys have opened for Chromeo, LCD Soundsystem and Cut Copy. Big shows. How did they do as a headliner? How did they handle the room?

Jessica 6 opened, Eli Escobar spun, I took pictures.
