Aisha Burns Covers Gillian Welch + Tours with Torres

Following her exceptional cover of Chris Isaak late last year, Aisha Burns announces some tour dates with Torres by sharing a new cover of Gillian Welch‘s “Look at Miss Ohio.” Impressively, Aisha’s voice doesn’t stray too far off from Welch’s original, which is a great reminder of just how much she’s come into her own through the years. For me, I love Burn’s honesty in her words about the song and its continued importance, expressing admiration for the protagonist “declaration of doing things in her own time, despite expectations.” It’s an admission that we can still expect growth and change from Burn’s work, and our job is to support and uplift where we can. Speaking of…look for Aisha on the road with Torres through the end of this month! Tune courtesy of Western Vinyl!

Look, I know there’s a lot going down on Saturday night. Between Levitation, and this other great local show that ATH is helping put on, you’ve probably already got your Saturday evening plans on lock, but if you’re in need of another choice, you should head on over to The Mohawk and get your fill of broodingly powerful indie rock with a front woman whose vocals will blow your mind. I’ve already been telling you about Mackenzie Scott of Torres for some time now, but if you still need persuading, check out the track below, which has some St. Vincent vibes going for it.

Torres Keeps Spitting Out Solid Tracks

torresI’ve already posted about Torres a few times, but she keeps putting out more great tracks from her upcoming album, so I’m going to keep sharing them with you until Sprinter comes out May 5th. This song, “Cowboy Guilt” has the signature growling vocals of Mackenzie Scott, but it also gives out some St. Vincent vibes in the distorted guitars that wind their way through the track. Though methodical in that it doesn’t really build too far from the beginning of the track to the end, but the lyrics add an extra element to the tune to hold you there. Give it a listen and get even more ready for Sprinter.

SxSW 2015: A Day With The Twilight Sad

The Twilight SadIt isn’t a new idea, plenty of people have followed a band for a day, but it is something I have wanted to do for a while now. The last time The Twilight Sad was in town in support of We Were Promised Jetpacks, I had some time to chat with James, lead vocals, and Chris Patin, the tour manager, about following the band for a day during SxSW. You see, Chris is a friend of the program; he is in The Calm Blue Sea. James and I oddly ended up standing next to each other at several day parties in previous SxSW’s and we have had friendly conversations about tea, food, travel, normal human stuff. Seemed like a good fit. What follows is an account of the day, followed by a ton of pics. As a bonus, I got to see several other bands, some pretty damn good ones, including Torres and Ringo Deathstarr (more on them later).

So those of us fortunate to have encountered the delightful Torres sometime over the past week at SXSW know, but for the rest of you who weren’t so lucky, I’m here to let you in on the gospel. Torres is what’s up, and this new song “Sprinter” which is also the title of her upcoming album, should make Mackenzie Scott a name on your radar. This song has a very Sharon Van Etten force to it; the power vocals are at the centerfold, but it’s impossible not to pick up on the nuanced instrumentation that is also at play here. Go on, get on this party bus of darkness with me and Torres… there’s plenty of simmering sadness to go around and look out for the album Sprinter that’s coming May 5th.

If you’re looking for a show full of powerful female songwriters, then you better make your way out to the Mohawk on Wednesday night. You’ll be greeted by three incredibly talented ladies, and their accompanying bands.  Torres is the headliner and the project of Mackenzie Scott, touring behind her excellent self-titled LP.  She’ll be preceded by the incredibly talented Lady Lamb and the Beekeeper, who released Ripley Pine to rave reviews earlier this week.  And of course, we couldn’t be prouder to throw our support behind Austin’s own Dana Falconberry, who will open up the night for you all. It’s going to be an evening full of beautiful voices and intimate moments–you can’t miss out on this one. Here’s tunes from LL and Dana to get you in the mood.
