Voxtrot Return @ Arts and Crafts (9.8.22)

Austin band Voxtrot has come out of their 12 year hiatus to return with a few reissues, and a slew of dates to celebrate those releases. Well, like all great bands, you’ve got to get your legs back under you, so the band quietly played a warm-up set out in Lockhart last night, and I was fortunate enough to be on hand.

Watching the band take the stage again, not to mention the smiles on their faces as the crowd sang back to them was a perfect moment etched in time. Special shout out to Jennifer Moor (Deep Time) who sang backup vocals throughout the night. The band represented a time in Austin’s music scene when there was so much promise and joy, and it was great to revisit that snapshot…and hope their return signals a similar wash over the city.

Was a bit of a hectic week, as I was out of town for a good part of last week, so RayRay helmed things solo, keeping you up to date with new jams from The Berries and Sorry. I crept in towards the end of the week with recent favorites like Key Out and Scarves, but I was most excited to hear new music from Bubblegum Lemonade hitting the airwaves! Oh! And a brand new album out of the blue from Neil Brogan! I mean, it was a short week coverage-wise, but some surefire jams to listen to in here.

Obligatory Voxtrot Post: Fifteen Minutes

It’s clear by the sold out shows in Austin that Voxtrot is enjoying their return, or at least I hope there’s enjoyment in it. For the fans, songs like the new “Fifteen Minutes” gives us a glimpse at what the band was up to following their debut LP and pre-hiatus. Personally, I think it’s really interesting to see how they were incorporating a lot of what was going on in Austin at the time; I love the noisy edges with the punctuated vocals from Ramesh (who used a similar song structured on his newest album, Eternal Spring). Hats off to the band finally getting all the credit they were rightly due! This song appears on Cut from the Stone: Rarities and B-Sides, out digitally on July 22nd.

I don’t even want to look back at last week. But, we had songs, there were some really good songs coming out of a really awful week. Our friend Ram Vela and his band had a new single, plus it never hurts to get a Voxtrot tune in your inbox. Think I kept coming back to these Bastien Keb, Flowertown and Tan Cologne tunes the most, well, and that Tony Molina track. There’s about 20 jams to sort through, so find a favorite. Or don’t.

Voxtrot Share New-ish Single, Kindergarten

Those of us in Austin, of the old guard I reckon, are super excited about Voxtrot‘s recent activity, from the announcement of shows to the reissuing of some music. Today, they share “Kindergarten,” which is a song they recorded in the mid-00s, but never put out…until it hits on their new Cut from the Stone: Rarities and B-SidesLP. This one has all the makings of classic Voxtrot, from Ramesh’s urgency around the 1:20 mark to the infectious stomp that helps give the song a bit of bounce. Still every bit in love with Ramesh’s voice as I was when I was youngster, but the explosion after the 2 minute mark definitely points to some territory the group were exploring, even when it crashes into this hard-hitting piano burst. Unfortunately, Cut from the Stone is already sold out, but perhaps they’ll have some on hand when they tour in the Fall!

So much good music last week, and so much to cover. Well, we tried to get up as much as we could, plus Brian got some great photos of Good Morning and Packs. Here’s our weekly musical recap, with lots of awesome news, like new releases from Tan Cologne, Field Guides…and Voxtrot! I think the news of their Early Music compilation definitely made my week, even as I was held hostage in my classroom by state testing. Enjoy some jams from last week.

It’s hard not to wax nostalgically about what a great time the Austin scene was back in the 2000s; it was a city that could do no wrong, from the release of Casual Victim Pile to indie darlings like Harlem; it was one of the most vibrant scenes around. And, perhaps my favorite, was Voxtrot, a band that shot to the top only to sparkle and quietly fade. But, today the band announce they will release an Early Music Compilation, featuring all their earlier EPs combined into one listen; it seems like a no brainer to grab it on this Bandcamp Friday. Plus, they’ll also have a super limited Cut from the Stone: Rarities and B- Sides release. And and and! There’s more! The band have shows next Fall! Shows! Okay. I’m super giddy. Please don’t buy all the copies of this before I can! Check out this new video compiled by Miguel Hinojosa of all this old footage from the band’s 2005 tour.

Love Listening to Leapling

leaplingAlliteration aside, I’ve completely committed myself to listening to Leapling. It reminds me of the great music that was being made by Voxtrot before you all turned your back on them, even though you know you loved that LP. It’s the best sort of pop music; it’s got lyrics you’ll remember and sing, great melodies and a bouncing spirit. Just listening to this track once isn’t the way to go, you’ll have to give it 4-5 spins, only because that’s what’s good for your soul. Look for Suspended Animation on June 10th via Exploding in Sound.

Austin Spotlight: I Miss Voxtrot

voxtrotI think one of the most disappointing moment in recent Austin music history was the disbanding of Voxtrot.  Sure, members have gone on to work on various things, and other bands like Literature and She Sir stepped in to fill the void, yet nothing quite seems the same.  Classic twee pop sounds with bounce to make your feet shuffle and guitar licks to bring a smile to your face epitomized the great act.  I had recovered for quite some time until the following track below came on my shuffle last night; it brought back the sadness all over again.  At an early age, the group was able to release this track on the excellent Raised By Wolves EP, and they never let me down afterwards…that is until they walked away.  I think we should all sit back and just enjoy this sweet tune.

Austin Spotlight: Ramesh Is Back

rameshFor those of you who’ve missed the effortless pop from Voxtrot (I know I do!), rest assured that Ramesh isn’t giving up on things just yet. A year or so ago I ran a tune that Ramesh was working himself, and then yesterday a few sites popped up with new tunes; it shouldn’t surprise us since he’s got a few shows around Texas with our friends Orthy and Young Girls. This new tune (one of two) is a slow-tempo piece of bedroom pop, though there’s additional musical accompaniment that makes the song swell with effortless beauty.  I’m always happy to hear more from one of my favorite Austin artists.
