SXSW Interviews: Twerps

It’s just a week away folks, and we’re here to share some responses from one of our favorite acts of 2011, Twerps.  Their self-titled debut blew us away, making our top albums of the year. We’re also really excited that the band has found some time in their busy schedule to join us at our party.

ATH:  What is the most challenging thing about being a band during SXSW or another similar festival?

Twerps: Everything!… playing, staying awake, staying sober, not getting Hangry ( Hangry = Angry and Hungry), and just generally keeping your brain intact. We had an awesome time last year and we are sure we will again this year, but when you come from a small suburb in Melbourne and you fly into SXSW you can’t help but feel a little freaked out and anxious! Last year SXSW broke me… at one point I was in the back of our car in a fetal position crying ‘no more… i wanna go home!!’ But I’m hoping I have learned my mistakes, so just gotta think positively and not let it get to you, also keep away from the ‘big stinky American green sticks’ that float around everywhere!

ATH:  What are some tips you would offer newbie bands to survive during SXSW or just in general on tour?

Twerps: Well, I’m a pretty precious petal, so some might find my advice to survive pathetic, but just take it easy on the drinks, stay hydrated, eat well. Us Twerps are all really into cooking and eating well, that can be a little hard at SXSW, maybe try and get to Wholefoods at least once a day and stock up with some good food. Ahh I don’t think people should be given advice, they should learn from there mistakes, I have sure learned from a shit load of mistakes! All I can say is when you feel like your about to break… you probably are!

ATH: What music are you guys currently jamming in your tour bus?

Twerps: Everyone has a pretty wide taste in tunes, we like heaps of jazz, reggae, hip hop, soul all types of stuff, at the moment Julia is really into Green Pyjamas, we have been jamming the War On Drugs record that’s great, our mate Lost Animal from Melbournes amazing record. Full Ugly the dude who is house sitting our house while we are away has an awesome record coming out sometime soon… but we usually just buy heaps of the bands who we play with records and jam them in the car. That’s the best way to stock your record collection up!

ATH: Who wins the Euro Cup this summer? It’s okay to tell us you hate soccer.

Twerps: Ahhh fuck. so weird, Dion has just got me into the EPL, and we watch it pretty religiously.. I’m trying to work out what team to go for at the moment, I guess it looks like Man City will win the Premier league, but I love Arsenal and Tottenham. But I’m not sure I’m just starting to really get in to it and am just enjoying watching any game so I haven’t fully committed to a club yet.

ATH: Due to licensing, you’ve had to change the band name, or else you get sued! What do you change it to?

Twerps: Paul Lennon

ATH:  It’s fairly early in the musical year.  What’s in store for your band before the world ends in December?

Twerps: We just play it as it comes dude, hopefully someone or something will ask us to play some where and then we will go there, then hopefully we’ll make some more songs and then hopefully we’ll get to record them, we ain’t ever really had a plan on what to do and it has been working out pretty well, so we’ll just keep on keeping on!

ATH: What’s the best pre-show beverage for the band? Let’s get brand specific! And, what’s the worst free shot we can buy you at SXSW?

Twerps: You dudes will buy us shots? That’s so kind. Um we like Tequila and Whiskey, Whiskey has gotta be Jameson and Tequila, we’ll there ain’t much to choose from in Australia so as long as it’s not from the well, we’ll trust you. Our friends band Tame Impala did a show is Mexico and the guy that put the show on owned a Tequila company; anyways they gave us a bottle of this dudes tequila and it seriously was the best alcohol I have ever had, we were meant to save it for them, but we just drank it all. Julia loves red wine, usually a Cab Sav. We are also really excited to get back and drink some Sierra Nevada Pale Ale so there you have it!

ATH:  Being out on tour, what’s the one thing you miss about being back at home?

Twerps: Our dog, she is 18 month old Kelpie, she is beautiful! Julia and I love her so much, Pat also has a 5 year old Staffie named Alby, he’ll be missing her and his Girlfriend! I’ll also be missing my bed.

ATH:  Best band of all time is….?

Twerps: Velvet Underground and Shane Warne.

So excited to have these guys play for us. Their set is at 1:45, and be sure to bone up on them first by checking out their record on Chapter Music! Oh, and thanks to Nick D for hooking up the interview! Here’s a hit:
