SXSW Interviews: Genevieve
You better believe we have even more SXSW interviews coming your way this week! Today we’ve gone just a little bit left of our normal coverage with solo artist (though she travels with a band) Genevieve. Many of you may remember her from time spent as the leading lady of Chicago based indie rock group Company of Thieves. Well now she’s out on her own and ready to catch Austin by storm. Follow the jump for her answers.
ATH: There was a lot of hubbub last year concerning corporate sponsors and pay to play and what not at SXSW. As a band, what’s your reason for coming to pay at the festival? What do you hope to get out of it?
G: All bands go to heaven at South By Southwest! I’m hoping to meet a lot of other bands and have a blast as this will be the first time I will get to attend and not have to wear the “under 21” black sharpie marker X’s on my hands hehehe
ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. What’s your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?
G: Of course! I am going to share a full range of emotion on the spectrum of feel. 30 minutes of expansion!
ATH: The festival caters to music fans, but food and booze are an important aspect of the fans and the bands. What’s your band’s food and beverage of choice?
G: My band likes to get to the point- traditional Austin BBQ! As far as drinks, my band is going through a vodka phase and I am enjoying Korean citrus honey tea.
ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Who would you ideally like to play with of the 1000s of bands gracing our city? Make your own optimal line-up.
G: I would love to play with Garrett Borns, Bleachers, and Springtime Carnivore
ATH: Let’s say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd seems drunk and angry at the world. How would your band deal with such a situation?
G: This is so specific it must be coming from real life! We would roll with it and arrive to the challenge in present time as our authentic selves!
ATH: What’s your favorite album to come out in the last year? What’s playing in the tour bus?
G: “Caught In The Dream” by The War on Drugs was my favorite album of 2014. We have been listening to Kendrick Lamar and a lot of Doo Wop in the van on the road!
ATH: Day parties have replaced showcases for music discovery? Is the conference really completely upside-down?
G: I have no idea! I feel so fortunate to be playing this year, I couldn’t be more excited and if upside down is the way it is then c’est la vie!
ATH: Band catch phrase in 5 words or less.
G: “Each Breath Is A Gift”
Thanks again for the time!
