Weekend Show Preview
We’re nigh approaching SXSW season, so naturally you should be taking advantage of the fact that your city has great music to see year round and head out to a show this weekend before it’s so crowded that you can’t stand it. Below are merely the highlights and my picks as to where you should post up Friday and Saturday nights. Wherever you go, you really can’t go wrong; the weather should be lovely, so go outside during the day and round out your night somewhere downtown…
Friday, Feb. 17
While things on Friday are pretty spread out and you could potentially hit up three out of four of these events, my pick of the night has got to be the show going down at Beerland. There’s no shortage of great local bands on that list, and we get to hear the latest new project called Horizontal Holdwhich features members of Jonly Bonly, OBN IIIs and James Arthur’s Manhunt.
Molly Burch @ End of an Ear // 6pm, free
Ringo Deathstarr, Al Lover @ Space 24twenty // 7:30, free
Flesh Lights, Nike, Horizontal Hold, Missing Pages @ Beerland // 9pm
GirlFriend, Tusk Her, The Digital Wild, Ladyfang @ The Swan Dive // 9:30, proceeds go to Planned Parenthood
Saturday, Feb. 18
Saturday night you’ve got a few options, but the place to be is The Mohawk for Austin’s latest up and comer, Molly Burch. She’s been getting a ton of national press for her nostalgic folk pop tunes, and rightly so– the singles that have been released from the upcoming record,Please Be Mine, have reminded me of Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen. Plus you get more local love from Julia Lucille and Cross Record and the night should be full of beautiful, moving music. That show is sold out, so good luck finding a way in!
Tacocat, Daddy Issues, Tele Novella @ Barracuda // 9pm
Molly Burch (record release), Cross Record, Julia Lucille @ The Mohawk // 9pm (sold out)
Blind Pilot, Dickie @ Emo’s // 8pm
