FT5: Music Fashion Accessories

We here at ATH hope that all of you had fun over the past 3 months soaking up the Vitamin D, getting wasted, and subsequently wreaking havoc across our city, but now it’s time to get back into the dreaded educational mentality. One of the truly great things about going to school is the first day. You’ll be meeting new people and making a good first impression is all it takes sometimes to get an excellent shot at a get-together with that certain someone you’re sure to see that day. Well, if music has taught me anything, musicians usually know how to dress to impress. I’m sorry to say it, but summer is over. Get some style for the new school year after the jump.

FTC: Desaparecidos

In all honestly, I had probably written Desaparecidos off entirely, putting them away for the better part of the rest of my life.  It’s not that I dislike the album, in fact, quite the opposite.  I probably played their own album Read Music/Speak Spanish at least once a day for the better part of two years.  Recently the band made headlines reuniting to protest Arizona immigration, as well as similar policies in their home state of Nebraska.  I busted the record out again, and it fits perfectly with my new attitude of more rock, less electronics.  No one shredded it with such political angst, which still remains relevant today, if you listen closely to the lyrics.  Oh, and they had some dude in their band named Conor Oberst, who doesn’t sound all country, like that guy with the Mystic Valley Band.  This is probably one of the greatest pieces of music to ever come out of Omaha, and that says a lot considering the rich heritage of the town.  Who knows, the way Rick Perry runs this state, maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll reunite to overthrow that Texan dictator.

FT5: Why Fun x3 Fest Is One Of The Best Music Festivals Around

So, last week saw the unveiling of the 2010 Fun Fun Fun Fest lineup by the Fun Fun Fun Fest corporation, and some of us were privilege to the official announcement via a press conference conducted at Austin’s Wyndham Garden Hotel. Complete with corporation adorned ties and suits, a PowerPoint presentation, donuts, fried chicken, and tap water, the leaders tickled and enticed with the revelation of it’s real goal for us and our future. “Prepare yourself for an exponential growth in awesome” was one of the leading lines into the disclosure of the lineup. Now, why is Fun Fun Fun Fest rapidly becoming one of the more popular music festivals amongst true music fans these days? 5 years in and this is what we have to look forward to during Fun Fun Fun Fest 2010.

FTC: Whiskeytown

I’ve been heavily into the alt-country scene these days so I thought I’d continue that trend with a quick look back at Ryan Adams and his old band Whiskeytown.  Now it’s been awhile since I’ve sung the praises of Mr. Adams (course with his recent material can you blame us?) and I thought it would be fun to glance back at how great he used to be.  Most of us know by now that Adams fronted this great alt-country band that never really soared to the heights of fame seen on Adams solo career.  The group only existed for about a 6-7 year period and released just the 3 official albums with countless B-sides and singles along the way.  Below I’m bringing you “Easy Heart” off Whiskeytown’s final album Pneumonia which came out in 2001.  I’d probably say that Strangers Almanac is my favorite from the band and where interested parties should begin their Whiskeytown tour.  I like this song below because it’s the last song on the last album from the band and you can really hear the transition from this tune to Adam’s solo career.

ACL Spotlight: The National

If you’re searching for background information on The National, you’re bound to find enough valid information dominating their Wikipedia page, but we’re not here to focus on a bland press release that will give you meaningless insight into the band’s history, Political/Social Support and Discography. We are here to offer up a look at music as literature, music that provides meaningful views into the modernity in which we live. This is The National, ladies and gentleman. Follow the jump for more.

The ATH Summer Mixtape

So as summer begins to dwindle down and the kids head back to school, we here at ATH thought a Summer mixtape would be in order to boost everyone’s spirits.  Let’s be honest, this summer hasn’t really delivered a truly great album as of yet so why not just make your own?  Right?  For our Summertime mixtape, we handpicked the best new music from up and coming Austin bands that we think you should know about.  You’ll see brand new and never before heard music from Great Nostalgic, The Authors, and Sunset along with some you’ve maybe seen on the site from Golden Bear, She Sir, Paperthreat and tons more.  All told, we’ve got 20 songs for you to take with you and enjoy.  Our Austin Town Hall Summer Mixtape website features a handy zip file download as well as streams of each song and a link to each band’s website if you dig what you hear.  So head to the mixtape site, download some tunes, tell all your friends, and enjoy what little summer we have left.  No really, tell your friends…. now.

FT5: Songs With Inexplicable Spanish Use

In all likelihood you have encountered the language known as English.  This bizarre Germanic dialect, which supposedly emanated from a small European island, is ubiquitous in the phenomenon know as “Rock and Roll.”  This so-called music inevitably features guitars and talk of “a-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-lop-bop-bop,” which I personally suspect may be coded language for violent revolution, or worse, for drugs!  Though English is still far and away the language of Rock and Roll (but I’ve got my eye on you Rammstein), increasingly artists who have primarily written in the Anglo-Saxon dialect are starting to branch out into the Romance languages.  Through our network of intelligence experts, I was able to obtain the following list which features 5 Songs with Inexplicable Spanish Use.

FT5: Albums Of The Year (So Far)

Seems like this time of year everybody makes their own version of the best of (so far) albums list.  You think we’d sit back and let everyone else have all the fun?  Think again.  I’ll get this out of the way now and say that this is MY list.  This is in no way a comprehensive list created by all us ATH staffers.  This is ‘ol RayRay’s list full of what I’ve been spinning this year more than anything else.  Now obviously it’s difficult for a music writer to condense a list down to just five, so some very worthy albums will be left off this list.  Of course we’ll put our heads together and make a huge list at the end of the year… Follow the jump for full list.
