Things have been quiet on the Cloudland Canyon front for the bette part of the decade, but I was really excited to see their name pop up on the SXSW artist list. Then, after reaching out, it was even better news to find they had a new LP in the works for later this year via Medical Records. So, take some time and Meet the SXSW Band!
Taleen Kali just dropped their record, Flower of Life, last week, so it makes sense they’re bringing those tunes into Austin for SXSW. We wanted to make sure that you got a chance to get to know Kali, so we reached out with our set of questions for Meet the SXSW Band. Give a look below to find out more about the artist as they roll into town.
Not much left for us to say at this point other than, are you ready for chaos, music, and fun? Hopefully you are, as the events of SXSW are mere days away at this point with tons of things going down this weekend. If you’ve been enjoying our interview sessions, this one is sure to be of interest as the French band You Said Strange really took some time and care with detailed and well thought responses. Many of the bands covered for our SXSW interviews have been mostly newer, or maybe even unknown to some, but today we have a true legend and personal music favorite sharing some responses. Though he recently hung up the old “PA” moniker, indie legend Matt Pond continues to make incredible music with a bunch of his music friends in The Natural Lines. I was very excited when Matt agreed to take part in our interview questions and not the least bit surprised when he shot them back within a few short hours. The man is a true pro. We continue today with more introductions to artists who will be rolling into Austin during SXSW week; this one’s extra special as they’re working with our friends over at Keeled Scales. They also just released a brand new set of songs this past week, which you can hang out and listen to after getting to know the band a little bit below.
While I feel I moved on a bit from that soulful garage sound that I fawned over in the early ATH years, I’m still a sucker for the sound when its done well…and no one’s done it quite as well as Gringo Star on their latest single. This one’s got this almost LSD-infused desert vocal that rolls through the track like a lone tumbleweed. Musically, it almost feels like its given everything to the vocals, except the space gets filled in by these perfect bits of string arrangements that manage to elevate every inch of the song by their very presence. It almost feels like it was penned in the traditional soul era, and I don’t mind that one bit. You’ll find this tune on their new LP On and On and Gone, which was just announced!
After releasing their debut album this past year, Puppy Angst are ready to venture into Austin for SXSW, so we wanted to make sure that you were prepared to get to know the band. They give us a little insight into what you can expect in their performances, with a sly wink that there’s something brand new in the works. Check out what they had to say!
Pushing forward and the SXSW emails are coming in fast and furiously. So, hopefully if you’re in the same boat, you’ll take a little time in your day to rest and and read about Dropper, one of the acts making their way to SXSW this year. They’ll likely be filling thheir set with hits from last year’s Don’t Talk to Me, with hopefully some new tunes in the works as well. The usual set of questions, giving you the chance to know what could be your next favorite band.
SXSW is on the horizon for all of us, so we’re pushing forward with our coverage of acts, hoping we can introduce you to a few folks you might want to catch when you’re out and about. So today, we’ve got Portland’s Foamboy, who are working on getting an album out into the world before the end of the year!
First there was Covid, then I had another kid, but I’m back this year to reignite the annual AustinTownHall vs SideOneTrackOne SXSW Party. It’s a 3 stage extravaganza over at Hotel Vegas, bringing in some of our favorite acts from all over Austin and having them throw down ridiculous sets that make us all proud of our music scene. Huge shout out to John at SOTO and 101x Homegrown for the organization, and thanks to the Vegas crew for having us back here. This year, we’ve even got a fun playlist for you to sample the tunes and share around to get your friends excited.
