New One From Speedy Ortiz

DSC_3974Speedy Ortiz sent out this rocking new track “Death Note” this morning and I felt the need for more of you to hear it on ATH. Now some of you may remember us not being huge fans of the live show during SXSW last year, but the more I think about it, the more I think the band may have suffered from poor sound and set up at pop up show locations. So I’m giving the band another shot, which is easy when they keep putting out songs like this. Rock on.

A new EP entitled Foiled Again will be out on June 3rd via Car Park Records.

Digging Into Balue

balueIt’s strange that we don’t hear more from New Mexico musicians, which is why I really wanted to get you all into Balue. The group just released a really great album, Wavy Daze, which is perfect for those looking for a bedroom listening experience. There’s hints of shimmering indiepop, but also touching upon some of the more modern reverb-laden pop writing. I love the number below a great deal; it’s sort of dreamy, but also rather catchy…it sounds really familiar, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe if you play it you can tell me what it sounds like to you.

Emotional Response Releases Typical Girls Compilation

typ front cdWomen deserve to stand alongside their male counterparts in the front of the indie music community, but let’s face it, this isn’t always the case, unfortunately. This is why the Typical Girls Compilation is so vital to the scene, or to the world. Emotional Response is releasing this album, filled with 16 female focused bands, playing music that should establish them as anything but “typical.” They’ve uploaded two sample tracks from PRIMETIME and Earth Girls, so I’ve got those below streaming for your listening pleasure. I like the PRIMETIME track for it’s grittiness, compiled with its self-deprecation. Earth Girls spin it differently, blasting through with catchy indiepop that will make any listener clamor for more. Grab a copy of this vital listening experience HERE.

Stream Tetherball’s Physical Violins EP

We’ve discussed the ambitious project of Tetherball earlier in the year, discussing his goal of putting out a handful of EPs in 2016, and you can finally stream Physical Violins in it’s entirety. “Tornado Games” kicks things off with a punchy bit of pop rock, knocking you back before moving on to provide the funky rock of “Greedy Tiger.” For me, those two tracks set up the EPs standout tune, in my opinion; it’s titled “Gladiate.” There’s an off-kilter bouncing piano line, giving off a playfulness that’s matched by the pop sensibility present throughout the entirety of the EP. “War (Medic)” closes the EP out with another driving ballad, focused around the plodding chords and tinkering piano play; the chorus in this song is a sure-fire winner. It’s four songs of fun pop, all with a different approach. Grab it, then let’s all wait until that next EP comes our way.

Groovy Electro New Wave From NO/NO

12028820_904958519559904_2891444078120180650_o-2You’re probably already gearing up for a weekend of fun and jams, so why not just give into those carefree vibes and pop on this new NO/NO track. It’s a new wave gem off their upcoming record,Sound and Light, which will be out May 31st viaGloss Records. For now, you can appreciate the dynamic combination of oddly distorted vocals and raging synth drum beats through the whole song. You’ll be shimmying your way through the rest of the day in no time.

Crunchy Rocker from Shy Mirrors

shymirrorsImagine yourself listening to Superchunk really loud. It’s so loud you’ve blown your speakers out, so the sound rattles, sounding a little grittier, a little dirtier than before. Well, that’s exactly what Shy Mirrors new single sounds like, at least to my ears. They just released this brand new little blaster, a tease for those excited about the band’s new work, which is slated for a release later on in 2016. It’s a track with power, yet one with just the slightest hint of catchy hooks, so clearly I can’t turn it off. Neither will you.

Psych Vibes from Ranch Ghost

ranchghostI like a little boogie, a little shake in my psychedelia. Lucky, for me, Ranch Ghost are bringing just that to the table with their latest single. Riding cymbals and that psychedelic sound pervade, but that boogie comes with the vocals, delivered almost spastically, almost as if they’re a bouncing hiccup. I like to tune in and tune out, but I love to get down and have a little fun too, so having a track like this one on a Friday seems perfect. It’ll appear on the group’s new LP, Lookin, which comes out on July 1st via Rough Beast Records.

Fresh Single from Quiet Hollers

quietLast year I was really excited by Quiet Hollers, sharing a couple of their tunes here on the site from their debut album. Well, a few months down the road, and here we are with a brand new track from the band. I love the classic feeling of indie rock that lurks in their songs, with hints of country and folk, though done so carefully that you might not even recognize it. I’m absolutely stuck on the opening moments of the vocal entry too; it’s breath-y, yet passionate. Look for the band on the road as they continue to promote their debut and write more kick ass tracks.

Fresh Dream Pop from Mumrunner

mumrunnerYou’ve got to root for a band like Mumrunner, breaking out of the incredible, yet small, Finnish scene with their last EP. They return today with a great new song, bringing their A game. Those of the dream pop world will surely recognize the way the guitar knifes and dances around the track, creating an atmospheric realm for the listener to sit inside. Personally, I love how the group has a lot of restraint in the traditional sense of verse/chorus, instead letting their musicianship be on display throughout the track. Soliti will release this track later in the year on a new EP from the band.

More From Fear of Men!

12711219_989518334429855_87472059364947692_oWe’re fast approaching Fear of Men’s newest release,Fall Forever, which is out June 3rd via Kanine Records. And while we here at the ATH offices are undoubtedly fans of the group, we also understand that in your endless quest for seeking rad tunes that you may have overlooked this trio from Brighton somehow. It’s time to fix that problem, and you can do that by pressing play on “Sane” below. It’s a beauty of a track, with thecaptivating vocals in the spotlight. There’s no lack of drama either, as the song takes a little while to build into itself, with swells of synths exploding in the stop-and-go style and drum sounds popping and bursting occasionally. Make sure you get on board the Fear of Men train and pre-order their album right here
