Kaputt Drop New Single, Gone West

It’s been almost two years since Kaputt dropped Carnage Hall, and the Glaswegian group is ramping up production as they aim to put out a new LP early next year. We got this new single courtesy of their label Upset the Rhythm, and it’s got me salivating at what’s to come with the new record. Of course, the song opens up with these sharp angular stabs, keepings us off kilter a bit with this sense of anxious paranoia. The vocals come in heavy and dark at first, but what I really loved happens just after the 1 minute mark. When the chorus comes in, the heavier vibe of the vocals starts to take on a bit of this sort of melodic punk tone; it’s less frantic and dangerous, more along the lines of what you might find on a Buzzcocks record. Feel like this is a tune that’s good enough to take us into the holiday. We’ll see ya’ll next Monday!

Sniff Share Horizontal Friend Single

It’s that time of year when sweet tunes start to dry up but I think we’re still able to find a few hits to bring you before winding the site down and calling it a year. One of those tunes is the newest single from the UKs Sniff, the follow-up to their stellar Sniff EP. It’s the sort of tune that walks the finest lines between power-pop and traditional pop-punk, with the song’s latter half really exploring the meaning of pop on its own terms. There’s this earnestness to the tunes that’s absolutely undeniable so I hope you’ll spend some time enjoying this sweet jam today!

Swansea Sound Share Pooh Sticks Video

In case you weren’t in the know, we helped get a cassette copy of the debut from Swansea Sound out into the world last week, but since album’s and videos never die, we wanted to encourage you to watch the band’s video for “The Pooh Sticks.” I’m not sure what’s the star here though…is it the incredible song? I mean, they tease you in with Hue’s casual spoken delivery, then ramp it up with classic jangling pop sounds. But, could it also be the great video designed by Rob and Amelia themselves? Using the record’s collage work style and some live cuts, though I’m pretty sure Rob flies off atop a cymbal. Die Die Die Announce New Album

Sure sure, I’ve been mostly hitting on the pop notes of late the last few years, but when something like Die! Die! Die! hits, I just can’t turn away from the abrasiveness that raised me. That thundering rhythm section that opens this song is intoxicating in its own right, then you get the Andrew’s voice barking angrily. At times, it almost seems like the drums are doubling down on the vocals and guitar, begging them so speed up and explode. Back and forth we go, reminded by Wilson’s lyrics that we all get lost in the mix sometimes, and thus we’ve got to reset. Everything about this song feels explosive, and I can’t wait for the band to drop This Is Not an Island Anymore next February.

That New Ted Leo Jam

Yea, yea, this was on that one site that I always try to avoid overlap with, but I couldn’t avoid my forever man crush’s newest single. The song came about after Ted Leo spent some time back and forth with Spencer Ackerman discussing narration for his new book Reign of Terror; Ted was encouraged to wrap up a song to coincide with the book’s release, and thus here we are. Honestly, this tune really sums up one of the reasons I love Leo’s music, and one that’s often overlooked. He’s known for his politics and for his ability to craft bitingly sharp tunes…but do we ever get to toss a nod his way for his melodic notes? I love the way he delivers the chorus on this tune, and sure, he can still ramp up that tenacity when necessary (as we see here!), but damn the sweetness of those pipes gets me. Ted, if you’re listening, I’ll put any record you want. For the rest of you, grab this tune, with all proceeds going to Jane’s Due Process and Frontera Fund.

Mister Amiss Share Wish You Never

This Friday, LA’s Mister Amiss will release the Nominal EP, but with that, we’ve got to make sure you get a little taste of what’s in store here. This is good old modern indie pop tunes, employing these jangling guitars that shimmy in the song’s front end, punctuated by light synth notes that hit you in the face. Of course, the melodic balance is necessary, so you get that in the dreamy sensation crafted by the vocal work on this tune, pulled back to allow for space to develop the song as a whole. It’s a feel good jam that can help you kick into Tuesday here!

Hollow Hand Drop New Single

It is a bright, sunny day here in Austin, TX with many of us on vacation, or at the very least, putting in short days as we wind down a brief week. Though he isn’t exactly from the land of sunny mornings, Brighton based Max Kinghorn-Mills, under his recording moniker Hollow Hand, has the perfect new tune for clear skies and hopeful days. His latest, “One Last Summer”, features a sort of folk inspired pop sound harkening back to say CSNY but with more modern Americana vibes like Fruit Bats. Hopefully it brightens your morning.

Kinghorn-Mills reports that this track is the first taste of a new LP in the works. No release date as of yet.

Great Lakes Announce Contenders

You ever stumble into a tune that just makes you nostalgic for home? Well, listening to the Ben Crum’s voice on the new single from Great Lakes had me yearning for that feeling, searching my soul for hints of home. I love how the track toys with Americana vibes, particularly as the voice has a wee bit of twang, but it’s still not afraid to put forth a heavy rock vibe that certainly seems like no easy feat. The guitar work and heavy stomp of the rhythm section often seem to work beneath the song’s surface, bubbling up in the chorus, jamming in the interludes, and dragging the song with a heavier hand across the finish land. If you’re into good tunes that feel like comfort food, then jam out here, and look for Contenders when it hits in February 4th via HHBTM.

Fawns of Love Share Taboo Daydreaming

I know it’s Monday, but I’m not sure you’re ready for this new Fawns of Love tune; the video from Kenneth Anger’s Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome alone is enough to captivate. The wife and husband duo of Jenny and Joseph Andreotti recent announced Innocence of Protection, and below you’ve not got the striking second single from the LP. For me, I was really drawn to the synth work, which is the band’s trademark, but here it sounds both propulsive and spacious, almost as if the stabbing looped beats punctuate the song’s negative space as it swirls about our ears. Even more intriguing for my ears was the way the band put some guitar notes too in the little interlude moments, almost faint, but just enough in the mix to really deliver this subtle emotion. If you like what you hear, the new LP is out at the end of the week via Sunday Records and Kingfisher Bluez.

Well friends, this is going to be a short week, and we’ll likely run some stuff today and tomorrow, then take off the rest of the week to detox before hitting the home stretch of the year. But, like every Monday, we like to start things off just revisiting what we were able to accomplish or cover last week…so you know…here we are and stuff.
