Swedish act Cat Princess have popped up on this blog before, so I’m sticking to my guns in my appreciation of the group as they drop new single “Rocko’s Theme.” It’s the perfect mixture of all these little musical tidbits that I can’t quite put my finger on, or really figure out why I’m stuck so hard on this song…which is perhaps the best compliment I can give the act. It starts off with this sort of jangling guitar shuffle, opening up into a nice little crooned vocal, almost lounge act in presentation. Suddenly, you’re spun into this world of cult musical stardom like a Hedwig or RHPS; it’s a full on arty performance with just enough hooks to keep you tapping your toes. The band drop their debut on May 17th via Rama Lama Records.

Olden Yolk Share Grand Palais

Someone reached out the other day to ask me what I’d been listening to a lot, and I had two albums on repeat pretty much the entire week, one being Olden Yolk‘s Living Theatre (the other is that Martha record!). Musically, it’s a magical journey that’s far more diverse than I expected, and I mean that in the best way possible…”Grand Palais” gives you another look at the band’s new LP. There’s these psychedelic elements, though they often end up being disguised beneath these textured layers of sort of Spector-esque pop vibes; it’s disorienting and captivating, and ultimately emphatic with the drumming of Booker Stardrum (what a name!). It even closes with this little spoken word jam journey, further spinning the band and the listener into a pop spiral! Living Theatre is out May 17th via Trouble in Mind Records.

Have To Share New Operators

Yeah so I’m a bit late on this news, but when it comes to I band I love like Operators, the news will be coming at ya no matter the timeliness. On Friday Mr. Boeckner and his band released this incredible new single called “I Feel Emotion”. The song has somehow managed to combine the driving qualities of a Springsteen song with the electronic/synth sounds from the 80s new wave movement. Basically, I love it and you should to.

Operators will release new album Radiant Dawn on May 17th. Pre-orders are live now.

The Lopez Share Sell It

It’s Monday and you’re likely catching up on the endless scroll of tunes across the Internet as you settle into your work week. Odds are, you’re likely bored, thinking it all sounds the same, so why not try on something just a slight bit different…the Lopez. The Pittsburgh duo are all about crafting joy in your world, through their own pop kaleidoscope; they sort of take bits and pieces from Sleigh Bells, CSS and Go-Team, mix it all up, then sort of say “fuck it, we’ll go our own way.” What you get is anthemic danceable pop music with a whole lot of bite. The band will drop Heart Punch on May 11th.

When you get an email about new music coming from Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten, if you’re me, you listen up. Today I’m really excited to share this tune from Desert Souls, a German outfit walking that rare ground where indiepop and psychedelia bleed into one another. Here we kick things off with a raucous crowd before the band bounce into a wayward garage jangle, almost surf-y in presentation. Then come the deep vocal tones, sort of delivered in this haunting fashion, sure to make sure the syllables land on beat with the drum work. Behind it all are these great backing vocals, swelling the song’s natural pop sensibility, while the vocals and the guitar tend to shift towards a Death Valley dance show. Keep your eyes peeled for more from this outfit, as KUS turns everything into gold!

Peak Twins Return with Beloved

Not too long ago, Peak Twins were getting some adoration from the masses, but they’ve been relatively quiet since 2013. Today that changes with the announcement of the group’s new LP, Beloved. “Water” is our first listen, accompanied by a gorgeous video employing mirror images, but ultimately it’s the song I’m in love with right now. All the verses reside in that casual pop arena popularized by many an Aussie outfit; they’re not pushing the envelop, merely caressing the natural melody within their songs. For my two cents, the special moment, aside from the nice little added arrangements, is the nice little change that comes for the first time around the 2 minute mark (also at 3:30); it’s just a mild directional turn, but plays in perfectly to the song’s aesthetic. Call it what you will, but Peak Twins have dropped one hell of a new number. The new LP will be out on June 28th.

Stanley Brinks and the Wave Pictures Share Tequila Island

Two artists I’ve been writing about since we up and started this old blog are Stanley Brinks and Wave Pictures. Stanley’s done his own thing, worked with Freshcard…and always circles back it seems to work with the Wave Pictures. Together they write these pop songs that are playful, yet illustrated the musicianship of everyone involved, such as the title track from their new album, Tequila Island. It draws inspiration from folk influences, and then transports them to island lifestyles…maybe they got this all written down in Cabo? If Jimmy Buffet had a fraction of cool, he’d probably sound like this batch. Tequila Island is out on June 21st via Fika Recordings.

Water Slice Share a Slice of Sunny Pop

Water Slice, out of Los Angeles, is the music of Patrick Phillips, who combines mellow vocals with pop sensibilities. In the video for “T Walton,” the sort of whimsical vibe of the tunes is mirrored in the video, which you can watch below. Expect punchy drums, bouncy piano, and jangly guitars that all combine for a lovely tune above which Phillips’ warm vocals soar. It’s a lovely tune, the perfect kind for your Friday afternoon to start off your weekend right. It’s taken from Water Slice’s debut EP, which is out now.

New Wave Disco From Von Konow

VON KONOW is the new solo project from Marko von Konow, out of Helsinki and Libson, and as this act they make new wave sounds with a bright splash of old school disco. This may sound like a weird conglomeration of genres, but the Bowie-meets-Morrissey vocals combined with the lightness of the strings, synth and even rhythms makes for a fun listen on “Lucid Sound.” This single is taken from Von Konow’s upcoming LP,For All and None, which will be out on June 19 on Solina Records.
