Sometimes bands you love break-up, or move away and that’s just the way life goes. For me, that’s what happened with our beloved Basketball Shorts, who we worked with for their Hot n’ Ready LP. Now, guitarist Bench has a new band, Rad Gnar, and he’s taking on the vocal duties here too! The band’s first single from their forthcoming LP is filled with these huge crunchy rifts, as one would expect from his previous work. But, I really love the way he leaves his vocals hanging, letting the notes rise, then fall back down to your ears with those classic hooks! On May 18th the group will drop Rad Gnar, their self-titled debut, but if you want to catch them early…they have a show at Cheer Up Charlies on April 30th!
Over at the Cheer Up Charlies this evening you’ll get a chance to catch two of the great acts on our little label, Basketball Shorts and Pollen Rx. Basketball Shorts are releasing a new 7″ featuring the killer catchy jam below, and Pollen Rx are a well-oiled machine after returning from tour. Plus, you get to see Rhett and Dean, as well as Break Time in the early part of the evening’s festivities. Come out and grab the new 7″ and maybe get one of those new cool Darren tank tops from the band as well! Let yourself live a little with a great Thursday night party.
That’s right, summer’s right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with our friends Basketball Shorts! The pop punkers have just announced a brand new 7″ for Spain’s Jarama Records, with this brand new anthem, aptly titled “This Summer.” For those that devoured the ATH released, Hot and Ready, you already know you’re going to get an energetic bit of pop music that will engrain itself in your brain. With only a few days left in the school year (for me anyways), seems like the perfect time to give you a listen to this hit.
Looks like today’s going to be a day for rock n’ roll, and this poppy bit of punk rock from Sam Coffey & the Iron Lungs is perfect. They kick out an anthemic style akin to our local favorites Basketball Shorts, filled with huge hook-laden riffs and lyrics to scream at the top of your lungs. What separates the group from their peers, at least in this number, is the chorus, touching up the tune with just a hint of clarity. They’re releasing their self-titled debut on Burger/Dine Alone on July 28th…and it’ll probably be filled with infectious numbers that’ll stick in your head for some time.
The jams were copious as were the tender moments. The showcase highlighted the talent in Austin with bands watching bands that shuffled up to be other bands. We had international celebrities in attendance, as well as every familiar face possible. I took photos, some with an Instax. We ate sausage wraps and drank beaverages. It was perfect air for a whisky.
Click through and be impressed.
It’s that time folks; Halloween is a few days away. With that, it’s time for the Mohawk’s annual Goblin a Go-Go gig, and we’re happy to have a hand in it, letting them use Basketball Shorts to guarantee a night of fun. But, you also be treated to Too Built to Spill, a cover band of superheroes, who may or may not also be affiliated with ATH Records. In the end, it’s a chance to try out your costume in a room full of strangers, and if you pull it off, you could be the winner of a free pair of Sound on Sound tickets!
It’s that time of year folks…the time of year when Austin gets treated to the weird and the exhilarating…pretty much for the entirety of October…then it goes back to just being South Congress. This Saturday, Margin Walker is bring you Bill Ball 2 over at Sidewinder, and this line-up is pretty ridiculous: Big Bill, Deep Time, US Weekly, Basketball Shorts, Masculine Pain, Mom Jeans, Que Pasa and more…full details found HERE.
Nathan summed it up in a book face post. He, with Mike’s help, runs a label that is proud of the content, proud of the people, happy to be helping bands in Austin have merch to sell and fund the next project. It is a ton of work; pursuing, promoting, logistics and coordination. I am happy to be associated with ATH records.
Hit the read more and view the greatness of Pollen Rx, Mean Jolene, Rose Selavy, Plantation Band, Young Girls, Basketball Shorts, Summer Salt and Shivery Shakes (in drag).
Saturday night folks! There’s only one place you should be come the end of the night (after you attend the PRIDE parade, of course): Barracuda for our Back to School Bash. Our label is about to celebrate it’s 10th official release with Mean Jolene…but ATH is also a home to teachers, so we wanted to celebrate back to school! What better way than to bring out the bands on our label and throw a big party with our friends from 101x Homegrown, who’ve graciously supported the label since its inception. You’ll have 8 bands, 2 stages, so please come celebrate with us. The night will include sets from Pollen Rx, Mean Jolene, Rose Selavy, Plantation Band, Young Girls, Basketball Shorts, Summer Salt and Shivery Shakes. If you’re not in town, be sure to check out our little stable of great Austin acts HERE. And stream the latest label hit from MJ below.
Doors are at 9 PM and it’s a measly $5. I’ll be on hand to sell you stuff.
If you’re in Austin, you surely were in attendance at the ridiculously rowdy (and fun) Basketball Shorts album release last week at Cheer Ups. But, unfortunately, not everyone lives in Austin, so we wanted to make sure that everyone got to hear the entirety of the bands new album, Hot and Ready, which we’re releasing with our friends at Fleeting Youth Records. It’s a pop-punk album, fueled with energy, hooks and pop culture references…so infectious you’ll play it again and again. You can buy it HERE, or grab it/stream it on iTunes and Spotify. You buy it from me, I’ll throw in a free copy of the 7″ by Big Bill, the arch enemy of Basketball Shorts. It’s super limited on clear vinyl with blue streaks.
Plus if you’re in Austin, the band plays a free show tonight at Vegan Nom, with free booze and good times promised.
