Last weekend, we welcomed a new comer to the Red River Cultural District in the form of KVRX Fest. While KVRX has long been a staple in our Austin music scene, this was their first go round of a festival of sorts and they came in hot, booking 40 bands across two stages to tout the title of largest College Radio music festival. Brian and I served as emissaries for the ATH crew and ventured out for both Friday and Saturday of the festival. KVRX Fest Starts Tonight: Bands to Catch and Things To Know!

In case you were wondering what you were doing with your weekend, look no further, as we’ve got a new fest that combines both great local faves and touring acts in small venues. Yes, that’s right! The inaugural KVRX Fest is upon us starting tonight, and for the low price of 45 bucks you get three stages and 40 bands, both local and national, to help kill your Friday and Saturday. Show preview: Better Oblivion Community Center @ Stubb’s -4/9

This Tuesday night (4/9), we’ll be graced by the presence of Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst in the form of the Better Oblivion Community Center as they take the stage at Stubb’s. Previously slated for the Mohawk, overwhelming support for the early 2019 self-titled album caused a move to a bigger venue; the hype is real and with good reason. Not only are both artists incredible on their own and in their various projects over the years, this new joint album is quite phenomenal. Tickets are still available and are a pretty sweet deal for the amount of talent you’re getting for the price. Openers are Lala Lala, who put out a great album last year, as well as Christian Lee Hutson. Some of our favorite locals, Being Dead will take the inside stage at Stubb’s Jr post-BOCC. Check out “Dylan Thomas” from Bridgers and Oberst (if somehow you haven’t already) and go scoop some tickets before they’re gone–it’s a great option for an early week night treat.

SXSW 2019 – A Recap

Yet another SXSW is in the books and it’s time for the ATH crew to reminisce a little and offer some highlight from the week behind us. I think we’ve had enough time now to take a few deep breaths, collect our thoughts, and delve through tons of notes and photos. Here Comes Being Dead

If you’ve been hanging in and about Austin for the last year, you’ve likely heard the name Being Dead; we’ve written about them several times over the last year, excited by their growth and creativity. Luckily for us, they asked if we could help get out their new 7″/EP, which, of course, we gladly jumped at! And now, the band have shared the standout tune “Apostle’s Prom” off said release. The track employs both Juli and Cody on vocals, while the video has them dueling…until they realize their shared love of horses. Here’s a band willing to go out and have fun, write catch songs and embrace all that is Austin. If you want that hot 7″, you can grab it HERE.

Peyote Coyote Continue Residency at Beerland Tonight

One time Florida, current Austin act Peyote Coyote have landed themselves quite the residency, with a month’s full of Thursday night shows over at Beerland. The band brandish a certain stylistic nod towards psychedelia, though I think the poppier folk influence in their songs is what has always had my interest. But, equally as important, are the band’s coming in to support the show, like tonight’s line-up has our perennial faves Being Dead (more news on them soon), as well as Shutterr and Grady P. Drugg…so you get the best of Austin for a cheap price. Doors are at 9, so get there early before it fills up.

New Music from Being Dead

This year has seen Austin’s Being Dead continuously put out single after single, and their latest is quite something. The first couple of minutes of “Rocky Mountain Cowboy Blues” see Cody draping his voices over a warm electronic atmospherics. Eventually the duo erupt in noise, blasting through your speakers, albeit for just a moment. Then it turns back to the calming bedroom pop before fading out into the ether. On the flipside, “Future Earth Street” has Juli stealing the show, bringing a bit of swagger with her performance on this slowcore stomper. A young Austin band in their ascendancy for sure. Enjoy the New Single from Being Dead

Austin’s Being Dead just crept upon my radar, but I’m really excited to be on notice about this new duo. On Friday they just dropped this ridiculously infectious new single, “Wild Man.” The track has this carefree indifference, an almost childlike playfulness, though you can hear roots in psych and folk…just performed with an enthusiastic stomp. While you can’t help but fall in love with the lead tune on the single, the flip side “Life Between Leafs” offers a glimpse of another side of the group…bedroom pop with the slightest hint of oddity hanging in the balance. Go on, give the single a stream.
