SXSW Interview: Fanclub
I’ve no doubt you’ve already heard me rave on and on about Fanclub, one of our favorite current Austin acts. Well, we realized that not everyone is as familiar with them as we are, so we tossed them our SXSW questionnaire, so you can all fall in love like we did. Plus, if you’re in town on March 10th, you can catch the band at Hotel Vegas for our ATH vs SOTO party!
ATH: Whats the name of the band/group? Where are you from?
FC:Fanclub. Austin TX.
ATH: Describe your groups sound.
FC: Dreamy indie with a sprinkle of synthpop.
ATH: What was your most recent release? Any planned releases from 2019?
FC: Debut EP called All the Same was released in Jan ’19. We have some singles/videos coming out soon!
ATH: For most SXSW sets, you get 30 minutes to leave a lasting impression. Whats your plan of attack? You have a set list mapped out yet?
FC: We literally will play all the songs we have :-P. The advantage of being a new band that writes 3 minute pop songs I guess?
ATH: Lets say your band has been booked an official showcase at a pop up venue somewhere in the middle of 6th street. The lineup features thrash metal, hip-hop, spoken word, and you. The sound is horrible, the lineup is not your style, and the crowd seems angry at the world. How would your band deal with such a situation?
FC: Um, come see for yourself March 14th 10pm at BD Riley’s lol (half-joking maybe). If there’s one thing we can’t stand more than bad sound, it’s a band with a bad attitude. Always make the best of your situation because you know what? It’s only 30 minutes of your life and you’re still doing something you love. Also we totally would love that lineup.
ATH: There are tons of bands coming into town. Of the 1000+ bands coming into town, who would you ideally like to play with. What band friends will be here?
FC: Oh man, I’m just going to name the bands I’m really looking forward to seeing: Illumaniti Hotties, Cherry Glazerr, SASAMI, Sneaks, and of course Broken Social Scene. Since we live here almost every band friend is playing and you can get a cheat sheet easily at Austin Town Hall vs Side One Track One’s SXSW show!
ATH: What has everyone in the band been listening to, or, what plays in the tour van/car/bus?
FC: I’ve been revisiting Forth Wanderers so much but also been recently obsessed with this Japanese band called Frasco. Some staples are probably obvious but Alvvays, Kero Kero Bonito, Men I Trust, Gingerlys, No Vacation…and Leslie hates it, but Daniel and I listen to a lot of MxPx and Operation Ivy, haha.
ATH: Describe your perfect festival, real or not? Whos headlining? Wheres it take place? Etc.
FC: The perfect festival would be somewhere I could walk to just out of sheer convenience for myself. So, down the street lol. As for bands…man this is like asking me to assemble the greatest Lakers starting 5 to ever exist…so hard but I’ll try. Maybe you should have given me a salary cap but here we go: Air, Grimes, Alan Braxe, Lush, Sufjan Stevens, Portishead, Radio Dept, Sebadoh, Slowdive, Stereolab…ugh I can’t answer this it’s too hard. Lebron, Kobe, Shaq, Magic, and Kareem lolz
ATH: Whats on the bands rider? If were bringing you food and booze, what can we bring you?
FC: Lone Star and a bottle of gin. I assume this is for Sunday’s show right????
ATH: The band gets to create their own taco pop-up shop at SXSW? Whats the name, and what sort of tacos will you have? Any sides?
FC: When perfection exists, why reinvent the wheel. It would be called Veracruz Tacos and it would have their Migas taco. Oh man I need one now dayummmm.
