TicketBudBannerWell, you’ve only got a few days left before 2015 kicks into gear, so why not join us and our friends to really make your night a bang? We’re helping host a rad night of music and good times at Cheer Up Charlies with our friends at SOTO, OVRLD and No Play Music. There’s going to be tons of great bands: Mom Jeans, Sphynx, Sour Notes, Silk Rodeo, Grape St., Lowin and A Sinclair…so basically, you’ve got all the reasons right there! But…there will also be various other activities like a midnight balloon drop and free puppies. Party time starts at 7 PM, and it’s only $5!  You can guarantee entry by grabbing tickets HERE. Austin-based filmmaker Karen Skloss has a new project, The Honor Farm, which is a thriller set on prom night. To celebrate this new film and kick off it’s fundraising in style, head over to Cheer Up Charlie’s tonight in your best getup to go to the mock prom you wish your prom was, with spiked punch as well as some sweet bands. Playing tonight for you to get down to are: Wil Cope, Panoramas, John Wesley Coleman, and DJs RT and Ray. Get on your dancing shoes and prom best and go have some fun while supporting your local film scene.

It’s Thursday, and you’re ready for the weekend already, so what other choice do you have then to head over to Lamberts to start Friday a little early? Really, none, as BLXPLTN are bound to kick you in the face with their afropunk badassery so hard that you’ll miss Friday altogether. Tickets are only 6 bucks if you buy ’em early, so you have no real excuse not to get yourself to Lamberts tonight to enjoy some of the tracks from Black Cop Down. These locals are joined by Berkshire Hounds to balance your rock with something a bit mellower. Get in the mood with “Pressure” below.

Show Pics: A Night Out In Austin (11/29)

Night DriveI love the shows that happen during the Thanksgiving weekend. Students are home, it is usually local bands hanging out with friends, perhaps getting back from the road or just popping up to keep sharp before heading into the studio. Last Saturday was just that kind of night with two of my favorites in Night Drive and Shivery Shakes at Cheer Up Charlie’s and Holy Mountain, respectively. As a bonus, I got to see The David Ruffins and Ishi and so many friends that things degraded into full on shenanigans. Yes, shenanigans, full on. #lightpaintingcockandballs

Back to the music, The David Ruffins sounded like Austin “in the day”, Ishi brought the kimono-beard dance party, Night Drive made a point to engage every single person in the crowd before heading off to the studio (yay!) and Shivery Shakes sounded super tight after a stint on the road.

Show Preview: Spirit Animal @ Stubbs (12.1) Tonight

spiritBrooklyn party rockers Spirit Animal bring their heavy grooves and sing-along hooks back to Austin for the second (non-SXSW) time tonight at Stubbs. Their tour goes for two weeks as they promote their new electro-funk jam, “Party in the Back” (out tomorrow 12/2). Their live show is said to be a blistering good time, filled with energy to keep you warm on this cold night. Thy released a 2013 EP, “Kingdom Phylum,” earning them MTV Buzzworthy ‘Artists to Watch’ honors and their video for summer single “BST FRNDS” has racked up 100,000 YouTube views.  You know, in case you wanna leave the house tonight!  Doors are at 8 and tickets are $10.

 

Show Review: Foo Fighters ACL Taping (11/20)

Photo by Scott Newton“We’re gonna keep on playing until they kick us the f**k out, so here’s a song you might know,” announced Foo Fighters lead singer/guitarist/documentarian/nicest mother**ker you’ll ever meet, Dave Grohl, before launching into “My Hero,” from the 1997 album The Colour and the Shape.  It was one of countless surreal moments from the final episode of the 40th season of Austin City Limits on Thursday night.

CaribouYou ever notice how a bunch of tours either kick off or finish up in Austin? In the case of Caribou, they were finishing up a successful run out in support of the latest effort Our Love. The bummer about being the last stop, no vinyl at the merch table. The best part, whoa hooollly shit is the band tight. Let me get this out of the way, this was one of the best live performances of “electronic” music I have ever seen. Dan Snaith and his team of musicians have found a way to make those key elements, the live drum and overlayed organic pieces of the recorded material, present in the live show. Flutes to extra percussion to ringing guitar licks, the material comes to life that then absorbs the crowd into a hypnotic tunnel.

I feel so jealous of the people in Toronto that get that homecoming show.
