With Levitation now just ONE day away, we are trying to cram in as many last minute previews as we can before heading out the door tomorrow afternoon. Our preview and interview today comes from one of our favorite new bands to emerge in the scene recently, New Orleans based Video Age. After the smashing success of my first Gimme 5 feature with ACL band Corbu, I decided to keep the idea churning with bands coming into Austin. An easy first choice for the idea was Brooklyn rockers Slothrust. The band was in town last night at The Parish, and though I couldn’t be in attendance, I hear the show was was like most Slothrust shows, bad ass. So prior to the show, I asked the band to pick 5 random songs that mean something to them or have inspired them in the past. No rules or limitations. Follow the jump to see what they came up with.
In the lead up to the release of Okkervil River’s Away, Will talked a lot about his new indifference towards rock n’ roll, so I approached the show on Wednesday night with just a little bit of trepidation. There were some hits, and some misses and then there were Brian’s photos.
Last Friday, it was supposed to be some nostalgia with Killing Joke playing The Parish. However, they cancelled leaving plans in the lurch. The truly awesome news was that scheduled openers would still come to town and even better, they added Video in support. A last minute add of Autlier completely rounded out the night.

I’ve already tossed a nod towards Knifight playing over at Cheer Up Charlies tonight, but there’s definitely some other shows that should pop up on your local Austin show radar. There’s actually a lot going on on Friday, but I’m going to highlight the places you should probably end up…then I’ll take a quick look at Saturday’s events too. Bear In Heaven rode into town riding the waves of praise from their recent release, I Love You It’s Cool. While the crowd filled the room for their set, it’s possibly many missed the stupendous opening acts at the Parish. Come on people, go to shows early!

On a chilly and regrettably less than spooky ‘Friday the13th’ evening, the Parish and Western Vinyl hosted a sold out event of emerging and established local talent.The audience was full with family and friends, young and old, who were treated to a sonic experience of the highest order and the way in which Balmorhea, in particular, presented their craft might have caught a few of them off guard. The Fun Fun Fun Fest powers that be announced recently that all after shows this year would be completely free for anyone holding a festival wristband. You can agree or disagree with me if you like, but that’s just about one of the most bad ass ideas I’ve ever heard. Leave it to the Transmission guys to continually outdo themselves year after year… So now that the festival is officially here, let us take a closer look at these Fun Fest Nites and give you a nightly recommendation on where we think you should be. Considering the last week seemed sort of dull, at least in regards to live music about the town, we were really excited by the killer bill at The Parish, featuring two of our favorite acts of the moment, Other Lives and the Rosebuds–we were unaware local band O.A.X. (pronounced Oaks) was joining the night as well. As usual, the Parish had excellent sound, and air-conditioning, so it’s hard to find anything bad to say about the evening.

Currently touring behind their new and spectacular album Loud Planes Fly Low, The Rosebuds are making a stop into a great setting at The Parish on Friday night. Joining this veteran act on stage are up and coming Oklahoma boys Other Lives who are also touring behind a superb new LP. With such a stellar lineup, you really shouldn’t be missing this show.
